The gift of a Fedora...
Hey folks,
Just wanted to write a little note about my first Indy hat.
I've always been into movie props and not so much into the costuming side of the hobby but one of the items I've always wanted was Indiana Jones' hat. A while ago I saw a listing in the Bazaar here for a "free hat". Overjoyed I sent the lister (kwh) a PM and he confirmed that it was indeed still available. I gave him my address and asked him for a postage quote only to be told that he'd send it to me for free!
When it arrived it came with this note:
"Here's your hat. I hope it wears you well. If you find it doesn't fit you please send it to someone else that might need it. That's how I got it. Take Care, Keith"
I am very touched. I don't know much about fedoras but I love this hat and it fits me perfectly (it's one of the licensed ones).
I just wanted to post this to publicly say THANK YOU for this very kind gift and rest assured that should the time come that I no longer need the hat you'll find it for free in the Bazaar.
Oh, Keith had one more request... Here it is, me in the hat:

What you've got there is a Dorfman Pacific "Official" Indiana Jones hat. I won't bother giving you any details about it, as you can just do a search for Dorfman Pacific, or DP, and you will get more pages than you have time to read. While there are many writings about folks opinions on that hat, I will leave that out of this and just say.....
Congrats on getting your first (there will definitely be at least one more in your future) Indy style hat! Once you get your next hat, you should do the same and send it along to someone else.
It is truly a testament to some of the members here that you got it as a gift through the CB. Nice work, kwh!!!

And regardless of the brand, you never forget your first hat. You wear it well, OB, and you're happy in it, which is all that matters. Enjoy that hat!

Exactly!!! In fact, that exact hat was MY first hat as well!!!! You've lost your hat virginity!! CONGRATS!binkmeisterRick wrote:And regardless of the brand, you never forget your first hat. You wear it well, OB, and you're happy in it, which is all that matters. Enjoy that hat!

Oh I'm well aware that anything that has been licensed as "official" by Lucasfilm is likely @#$%, but nonetheless I'm very happy with it. I'm pretty laid back when it comes to things like this (less so with my props) and I figure that the more you obsess over details the less happy you'll be with what you have. While there are many writings about folks opinions on that hat
It gives the feel which is all I'm after for now.

Re: The gift of a Fedora...
I actually like the look of the DP "Indy" hats. I mean, not as an SA hat, but as a brown fedora, they're quite dapper, IMHO.
Re: The gift of a Fedora...
THAT is what matters! If you are looking for an SA Indy hat, DP probably won't impress you. If you like the LOOK of the DP, the all the power to you and I'm psyched that a hat is made that you enjoy. That's why I left DP commentary out. The point is, someone got a free hat that they really like from a very generous member, and that is the spirit of COW, isn't it?jlee562 wrote:I actually like the look of the DP "Indy" hats. Re: The gift of a Fedora...
I agree. It all depends on what you're looking for from a hat.jlee562 wrote:I actually like the look of the DP "Indy" hats. I mean, not as an SA hat, but as a brown fedora, they're quite dapper, IMHO.
While shopping at the local market I've often seen an older gentleman wearing a very nice looking "fedora-ish" hat. One day I walked near him in an attempt to get a closer look, and was surprised to find it was this Dorfman Pacific licensed hat (complete with pin). While it clearly didn't look like any hat Indy ever wore, it was a sharp-looking hat that suited this gent rather well.
Back to the topic, the hat looks great on you Orange_Blend, and what a nice thing for Keith to do!

I'll refrain from cracking wise about DP's and say what I'm thinking.
Orange_Blend, I think the hat looks good on you, and like others have said, you're happy so that's the most important part. It's really not [all] about the most screen accurate gear or the most expensive offerings, it's about what the individual... you like.
Wear it with pride.

Re: The gift of a Fedora...
Actually a similar thing happened to me. I was in the drug store and saw an older gentleman in a sharp looking black fedora....when he got up to the register, sure enough, there was the "Indiana Jones" pin on the ribbon. I was actually a little bit surprised that a DP still looked this sharp, even though it could have used a little TLC, it was clearly a well loved fedora and worn with pride.Zombie Jones wrote:I agree. That was an amazingly generous thing for Keith to do. Now, does anyone have a 10' David Morgan whip that they want to donate?

Orange_Blend, I'm really happy for you and happy that the hat fits also.
Not bad at all, and I really like the colour as well.

Re: The gift of a Fedora...
Yeah, its amazing that it just happened to fit you! Nothing wrong with a DP - it's a 'real' hat. Just wear it - the more the better. Don't worry about grease stains from handling or sweat stains from desert adventures - they're all part of the game.
