I live in Texas so I've NEVER received a cowboy hat reference....I've only EVER had indy references when I where a brown fedora thats even remotely close to an indy hat.

An experiement I've wanted to try is to where a Black leather jacket with a moonstone grey fedora and see if I get an indy reference....

I've had my Henry for a few days now. Wore it into work twice so far - had one girl say 'Hey Cowboy'
Everyone else that I got a comment from was like 'Hey, Indiana Jones!' and 'What's up Indy?' and my boss even called me Dr. Jones.
Not sure if those comments were sarcastic (as members' stories have told, most casual fans won't know an Indy hat from a non-Indy hat anyway) but it was nice to get a good response.

My daughter loves Indy even if she's just 5. But she likes mutt's character a lot because she recognizes him from the transformers movies.

Actually no, not really! Maybe they were just being smart, but I got a lot of 'Hey you look like Indiana Jones' and 'Nice Indy hat' comments - and mostly form a bunch of the serving staff. Since I work in the kitchen, only my boys on the line know I'm such a fanboy. I did have one person on the street call me 'kangaroo boy'....whatever the heck that means.
It's funny how few people actually know what Indy's hat looks like...even though they have seen the Indy movies.

I don't own a fedora, so this isn't a fedora story. But it's of a similar nature to the stories told in this thread so I thought I'd include it. If there's another thread better suited for it, then appy-polly-loggies.

Anyway, I had my first "it's Indiana Jones!" moment the other day.

I was wearing my close-enough llbean pants and my Todd's shirt, belt and boots. I wear that get-up from time to time as just normal attire. I was just about to leave work for the day (campus media library) and threw my bag over my shoulder.

In walks my professor (I'm a film student).

"Hey look at you dressed all Dr. Indiana Jones."

"Mat, you're the very first person ever to say that to me."

"I can't see how. That bag is a dead give-away."

"The bag, Mat? Of all the things I'm wearing and you say the bag?"

"Very much a dead give-away. Very Indiana Jones-like. And your shirt, the pants... the colors are all spot-on too."

"Well it is THE Indiana Jones bag."

"A-ha! All you need now is the fedora."

"I don't own one..."

"Well I suppose you need to earn that hat..."

Nice encounter. I knew sooner or later someone would call me on it. Should have figured it would have been my film professor. The man's geek and proud of it.

I don't understand this!!!! Do people not know what a cowboy hat looks like??? Maybe its just because I'm from and live in Texas, I don't know. The indy hat doesn't look anything near a cowboy hat.

I had an 'anti-cowboy hat' moment at work. We had an afternoon outdoor event so I was sporting my AB ROLA. I started teasing a couple of colleagues, one was wearing a sweater vest and carrying a laptop and another had popped the collar on his polo shirt (to keep the sun off his neck, but still). Sweater Vest retorted with, "What are you supposed to be, a cowboy?" To which three other people standing around immediately interjected with phrasing along the lines of "No, that's a fedora, like Indiana Jones wears."

I didn't have to say a thing.

I've worn my Fed IV with my Wested Raiders jacket on several occasions, and never got one comment. Maybe it's the collar-length hair and the beard...

On the other hand, yesterday I was wearing my M-65 field jacket and my RDB because it was raining, and my wife, who knows better, said, "You look like Indiana Jones."

Sometimes, I feel things such as this are a bit rude. I don't understand it. When I see some white kid dressed up as a rapper with his pants falling off, I don't start making fun of him. Sure, fedoras are fairly extinct but its a classy article of clothing. Much more class then wearing a baseball cap or many of the things I see people wearing today. meh....

I was having this conversation with my wife just last night. she doesn't like the wide brimmed hats but she knows I like em so she doesn't bother me about it. I asked her if she though my hats were as silly as those guys decked out completely in some sports clubs clothing. I pointed out a guy dressed entirely in blue and orange with the Florida Gators stapled everywhere from his ball cap to track pants. Even his sneakers were blue and orange. How come someone can look like a complete fool like this and no one bothers them, yet you dress nicely, topping it off with a hat, and you are suddenly a sideshow act? I don't get it and frankly don't care.

Well, in these times a guy under 50 wearing a wide brimmed fedora is a bit of an anachronism I'm afraid. It's the majority of people in their teens/early twenties that dictate what's fasionable nowadays and I don't know about you, but I was quite foolish at that age

Cowboy remarks.... A clear sign that people don't know their hats any more after 4 decades of not wearing them

Not a big surprise really. I used to get irked every time I heard one. After a while I realized that people were so out of tune with hats that it has simply become quite understandable to confuse one wide brimmed hat for another.

I actually was having the conversation too. My gf and I decided to go to walmart around 9 p.m. She threw a coat on over her pjs. I put on slacks, a button up flannel, a wool vest and a sports coat and my hat. She kinda laughed and shook her head. Thus I started talking to her about how I refuse to give into "Walmart Mentality" that I can go to Walmart and be as rude to people and inconsiderate and also dress in clothes that were never meant to be worn in public. If I'm going out, I'm going to look to what I feel is presentable.

It's just like how I take my hat off indoors, and always, always open the car door for my gf. I also always stand on the side of traffic when we walk anywhere.

She loves it, and mostly understands it. Calls me her "old man"

lol, when I was young I wanted to wear a fedora.......so I guess I can't say anything. Even before Indy I loved fedoras, watching old Bogart movies, etc. Then after Indy, it was over all I wanted was THAT hat.

I'm twenty two and don't dress that way but I guess I'm the exception to the rule. As far as cowboy comments go, they don't bother me. They are usually preceeded by the word nice (i.e. Nice cowboy hat). They mean well and that's what's important.

Clothing-wise I was rather the exception to the rule as well. Heck, I bought my first fedora when I was 16 (a black wool one, now owned by my dad). Ok, I didn't have the guts to wear it to school or anything, but I did wear it during summer holidays.

It's coming back though. Where I live (Palatinate/Germany), I counted over 30 fedoras at last christmans market. I also don't get any comments when I walk around with it on the streets. If people look at me a little longer because of my hat, I have the feeling that these looks are more looks of appreciation than of disapproval. It also depends on how well the hat fits to the man and the rest of his outfit, I guess.

Not, mind you, that I care what they think of me-- last time I cared what a kid thought of me I was a kid myself. But I still can't stand the little brats. They definitely aren't getting whipped like they should because they haven't any respect for anyone.

Had some 14 year old punks heckling me at the mall the other day for the hat.

Walked out of work today and for whatever reason (field trip?) there were a bunch of 14 year olds on campus today. Got a handful of "giddyup's" and "ride 'em cowboys" from the little brats.

Not only are kids disrespectful, they're also morons.

Ah, nah, hatred of kids has nothing to do with any of this-- I hate them regardless. I'm not self-conscious and it certainly doesn't bother me. Just was my first "cowboy" moment.

Man....as if the world had to prove me wrong. I had constantly said that I've never had the "Cowboy" comment and reckoned it due to the fact that I live in Texas and people here know what a cowboy hat looks like.

As of today, 5:52, Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010 - I got the comment. Two houses down, some tween yelled, "Hey cowboy" as I was loading up my truck in front of my gf's house down here in Houston. *sigh*

Just had another good one--

This one archeology professor on campus is such a nice man. About as old as most of the stuff he excavates, but a great man. I had his anthropology class my freshman year and he never remembered me. But for work, I help him all the time now setting up the 16mm projector or rescuing him from *gasp* the confusion of a computer. So now he remembers me. I just said hello when he came in to check out a cassette player and he noticed my hat.

Now I want to say that while he never remembered me in class, I have fond memories of him. And boy did he ever used to complain about Indiana Jones...

Anyway he says, pointing at the hat, "is that cowboy or some kind of London chic?"

"A fedora... Dr. Jones actually..."

"Oh, I've seen a lot of them..."

"I bet..."

"Yeah, all sorts of guys wanting to be Indiana Something-or-other"

"Well as long as it introduces people to your field, it can't be too bad, can it?"

VERy well said! I wear a cheep $50 Indy. Yes it's more outback then his, but this is the style I like. Does this mean I don't have the spirit? Yes I can afford a much more SA version but why, I love the wider brim. Sorry that's not the point. The point is unless you're a REAL fan, you generalize this style of hat. So don't feel down over something like this, You know and we as fans know, who else matters?

Nothing wrong with developing your own individualistic style. Adventure is a 'spirit', state of mind, etc., more so than it is a look. Of course, with safari's, hiking, exploring, etc., there are other types of gear that say the same thing, that its time to leave the adventures, and sometimes mis-adventures of navigating a concrete jungle for a 'real' adventure.

Yes, style is the right word. I'm what you would get if Indy was a biker. I dress close enough, but not spot on. tan cargo pants or blue jeans with black t-shirt. Over that a over shirt, colors from brown to light tan. sleeves rolled up. Boots are always brown harness style. I don't really like the look of the Fedora so like I said outback all the way. Jackets range from Distressed brown motorcycle to, well, really haven't worn the Wested outside yet, but don't see why I wouldn't. that is if I'm not in the US Wings. I perfer to call it Indy inspired.

I get a lot of these...

A little 8 year old walked past me the other day and tugged on the young lady chaperon's sleeve (yet another field trip for brats to my campus)-- "Look! It's a cowboy!"

A few minutes later some older gentlemanly janitor came up to me and said "You looked just like Indiana Jones! What do they call that sorta hat... Bowler is it?" "--Fedora..." "Ah, right! Fedora!"

I don't really have any funny stories about what people say about the way I look. These kind of hats are all over here in Kansas. that and I think when you have overly long hair like I do this style of hat works very well. Overly long means, if I don't pull it back while dressing it will get caught in my belt buckle.
