My YIJ fedora...
I occassionally get to make one of these, but not often. I think to date, this is my 3rd YIJ fedora, out of several thousand Indy fedoras I have made.
The original.
Here is my replication. Rabbit felt.
Going by these pics with the original, I need to turn the brim down more. I flanged it, but I see now that Young Indy's fedora has a down turned brim! Easy to adjust though. But not bad for a hat I have not studied in depth. IMO.
I think this block that I used, a vintage block is pretty close to the LC fedora block, just going by the upper radius on the top/sides of the hat. I never used this block prior, and was quite happy with how the hat turned out. I think I now have a new block to use for the LC fedora as well as the TOD fedora. This one looks more accurate than what I have been using for those hats. And I had a set of them all along, in one of my rental storage buildings. I transported this set back to the shop yesterday!
The specs on this hat are.....2 7/8 brim all around. 5 inch creased crown height, on the sides, with 1 7/8 vintage pure rayon ribbon. Per the film, I have the back of the hat higher than the front. That was a feature of this fedora. This is a customers hat and I will ship it out today with 2 other hats.
I am so taken with this hat, with this blockshape, that I now want one for myself! I mostly wear the dimensional cut brimmed hats, but this one here strikes my fancy. And I think I NEED a non dimensional brim in my herd of hats that I rotate. Of course it will be next next before I have time to make myself one! So, I have this to look forward to. Fedora

Re: My YIJ fedora...
That is a really nice hat, and classic wider brim, maybe a 50 mm ribbon?

Re: My YIJ fedora...
fantastic job Steve as always. I'm glade you posted this. I have a customer who has one on order and i think this helps me greatly. Don't think the block I'm using is as good as yours though.
Re: My YIJ fedora...
I think the roll of ribbon said, 22 1/4 ligne, but not sure. I did measure it before I installed it, and the ruler read, 1 7/8 inches. Not sure right off how that translates into mm.That is a really nice hat, and classic wider brim, maybe a 50 mm ribbon?
I gotta fix the brim on this hat before I mail it out though. It needs more down turn. And the more I look at this hat, the more it looks like the LC blockshape, at least the PR photo with Ford and Connery together. I like the radius on the top where the sides turn into the crown. Very LC ish to my eyes. John, if you need to replicate this block, I can email you the block number and pics of the block so you can send to our blockmaker to get yourself a set. Now, or in the future. I don't mind sharing with you. I think it would make a great LC fedora as well as the TOD because the block has some taper on the upper sides. Some, but nothing drastic. And its the best block I have to date for pulling off these looks. Fedora

Though I'm not really into the YIJ fedora, this one looks great! I do think this block would yield a great LC, as you think it will, and would love to see one made on this block.

Amazing! Is the best YIJ hat never seen!

Here is a pic showing the top crease in this hat.
And thanks for the good words! Fedora

Re: My YIJ fedora...
As a huge YIJ fan I must say this one looks great! It looks so close to the hat in the second season, great work!
I hope the owner of it posts here when he gets it.
Does the block have some "built-in" taper?
I think, given the time when the series was produced it could have very well been the same blockshape as the LC hat, at least some.

Yes, could very well be.
Kinda odd that the hat Indy wore in YIJ also showed the back being higher...at least in the above pic. Coincidence? Fedora

I imagine they were just trying to show continuity to the hat being worn in the series by Flannery.

Re: My YIJ fedora...
I've never been too big on the YIJ hat, but that one is nice. I like the wider ribbon on it and the non-dimensionsal cut. I guess I really like the way you crease it because that is the only thing I don't like on the YIJ hat and I love this one.

Re: My YIJ fedora...
The width of the top of the front crease varies within the series. Some of the YIJ fedoras feature a wider top crease, and some feature the one I put in this one. I like this one a bit better. The customer can tweak it to suit.
I never really cared for the Young Indy hat, but it is starting to grow on me just a bit. I mean, I like it better today than years ago. I am sure my own, will not have the high back though. I will push the back down for myself. But, hey, a larger brim is cool, and it would add some variety to my own herd of hats. I will also probably opt for a 1 3/4 ribbon, which is just a little less than the one I used on this hat. I seem to max my own personal tastes out, at 1 3/4 inches of ribbon. Fedora

Re: My YIJ fedora...
That's a beautiful Young Indy hat! I've always liked the YIJ hat the way it was early in the series (the Mexico and England episodes, especially) and I think you captured that look perfectly. That's the thing about the YIJ hat, it aged along with the show. Looked great in the beginning but near the end it kind of shriveled up.
That high back is different, though. I don't think I've ever seen another fedora like that.

Re: My YIJ fedora...
Looks good, Steve. I have a set of screen grabs that I did and the measurements make the hat out to be 7-3/8" open crowned with the sides of the brims being 4" wide and the front being 3-17/16" and the back brim being 2-27/32" using a ribbon hieght of 24-1/16ths lignes and ...................... no. Not really. That would be completely wrong. Everyone knows it was only a 1" ribbon............ Just kidding.
I remember one of the earlier ones you did. Just as nice. You know, the YIJ fedora went from either looking nice to dorky or somewhere in between. The TOD fedora looks to be the exact same hat in every scene compared to the YIJ fedora from episode to episode. You have picked the nice version to replicate. The client should be very pleased.

woah! nice one!
but i don't think the ribbon really is THAT wide on the original YIJ fedora:
(one of the hats used in the "London 1916" episode)
but if the customer wanted it that wide i'll shut my mouth
nice to see some YIJ hats around here from time to time. i Love the style (the mexico and London 1916, just to make that clear )
oh and here's a pic of the first YIJ hat Fedora made back in 2004/05:
Notice the ribbon: perfect!

That would be great. I would get a set right away as to make yours on it.
CJ, That first shot is my favorite from the show.
Re: My YIJ fedora...
Really? I watched the YIJ dvd set and it looks to be 1 3/4 or so.but i don't think the ribbon really is THAT wide on the original YIJ fedora:
Hard to find pics online of this hat though. But since the Poet came with a wide ribbon, in stock form, I figured this YI hat was one of those. The ribbon is wider than the standard Indy ribbon, that is, wider than 1 1/2 inches. Looks wider than 1 5/8, and the next stop is 1 3/4. ALthough your pic shows a ribbon that looks smaller. I don't see it on the dvds though. Fedora

i disagree. it's still too wide in my eyes. and if there's one indy-fedora i've studied, it's the YIJ hat. On the Mexico-hat the ribbon sits a bit loose on the hat. On that scene, when Indy meets Remy for the first time, the ribbon is pulled up a little from it's original spot. you can almost see it if you look REALLY closely on the photo Fedora posted. but see the episode/scene, then you'll see it clearly.
here are more shots from "london 1916" (well, indy is actually in Oxford here)
the ribbon isnt really as wide as some think. yes it's wider then the original indy-hat but not much. the ribbon on the hat Fedora made is jsut a tad wider than the original.
another shot from mexico:
i rest my case.....for now

Re: My YIJ fedora...
I agree with what you say, in the pics you've posted.
But what do you think about the ribbons width in the pic I posted? I still thinks the first Yong Indy hats ribbon was wider than the one he used in Europe, and it looks like Fedors hat to me...

Re: My YIJ fedora...
Exactly! You can even tell that by looking at the aging of the ribbon and the bows, for example on one of the hats the middle part of the bow is reversed.RelicHunter wrote:...That's the thing about the YIJ hat, it aged along with the show...
I would also go with a 45mm wide ribbon. Here is a hat I´ve reblocked a few days ago, it has a 45mm ribbon and a 2 7/8 wide brim.
Some angles are a bit off, but I think it shows the 45mm ribbon would work really nice.
To me the YIJ ribbon has a tentency to look wider or smaller depending on which scene you´re looking at, I guess it has something to do with the cameras and the distance. You could say they´ve had more hats with different ribbon widths but I don´t think they´ve put so much effort into that. Examine the distressing mark on the hat and the ribbon and you will always find the same ones in all episodes.
However, I could be wrong and they really put in that much effort to make each hat a clone of each other
Maybe it would also help to know what ribbon width were available from HJ back then. I read from different sources Poets came with either 50mm (which we know is too wide), 45mm and someone on the Fedora Lounge even had one with a 43mm ribbon. Maybe someone knows better here or even has one or several from that period.
I think you could get away with either of these widths depending on which scene you´re after and the shape of your face.

I think that 45mm could be right...

blury photo. looks like it on that photo yes but the Mexico-hat isn' allways to be trusted. i saw a photo of Young indy on a horse and the ribbon look'd HUGE but after havin a closer look, there were a little dust over the ribbon creating an illusion making it look wider
here are some better shots of the same hat you posted Odo:
now look: if you add another ribbon with the same width on top of the original ribbon again, would the crown be completely covered? i'd say no. you will still see a little of the top of the crown
now do the same with this one, imagine the same ribbon style on top of the other:
the crown would be completely covered
Nice hat Tremolo

Re: My YIJ fedora...
It depends on the bash, though. If the crown height is 4" after the bash, then yes, if you double a 50 mm ribbon, both would cover the height of the crown.
Re: My YIJ fedora...
My guess on the ribbon is 1 3/4 inches. So, not a checkmate, IMO. 45 mm equal 1.77 inches, or basically 1 3/4 inches. And the YI hat looks to have a change in ribbon size, possibly, so we both may be right. Fedora

Re: My YIJ fedora...
about 40mm.
Re: My YIJ fedora...
But that is 1.57 inches! No way. IMO. That would translate into the ribbon being 1.6 inches, and my eyes see a wider ribbon than that, at least for some of those hats. All YIJ hat pics are not showing the same width ribbon, IMO. The hats that were posted showing a less wide ribbon, don't seem to match the other hats in ribbon width. I know when I watched the series, I saw a wider ribbon than 1.6 on those hats. It stands out to me. Fedoraabout 40mm.

Re: My YIJ fedora...
..oops! My inches and mm rules were not aligned on the ruler. 1 3/4 inches is more like 44-45mm. The young Indy hat's ribbon does look wider than the ribbon used in the movies, but as to how wide, is a guess. Maybe they used two different sizes for YIC?

Re: My YIJ fedora...
Im not sure it means anything, but in the YIJ pic, it appears the back of the bash has been pushed out of a long-standing previous bash. Was this done intentionally to make the hat appear different than what we know as a more standard 'slightly lower in the back' Indy bash, or maybe just totally at random? I only mention it because when I first started looking at the pics in this thread, it appeared to me that the back of the crown was too high. Now, with this photo, it looks like the back was pushed up out its 'natural' state.Tremolo wrote:RelicHunter wrote:

Could be but I don´t think so. There were only two scenes when the hat had a bashed back in the London episode. The is the only time the hat looks really new, expcept for some distressing on the ribbon. You can even spot hints of the original flanged brim shape as opposed to the down curled look of later episodes.
Here are some pictures from the London episode:
Notice the very fresh look of the back here.
I think the impression of a formerly bashed back comes maybe from pinching the back. Just a thought, this is at least what I come to think of when I see this pic here:
If you take a look at the the episodes from the second season you will notice that the top of the hat seems to have taken the shape of Sean´s head and along with longer side dents results in a, well, "natural teardrop" shape.

Ah, the more I look, the more I think it may have been a 1/5/8 ribbon! So, while I was not engaged in a chess match, I may have been checked and mated! Fedora
