Just bought my first Akubra....

Post by backstagejack »

Didn't post this in the Fedora section as its Indy related but not Indy Fedora related.

I just bought my first akubra, Bogart style in black. Don't know if anyone's bought this one before but I liked the look and thought it might look good on me. Plus with Akubra's legendary toughness, it will hopefully last me a few years to come.

I was inspired by Robert Downey Jr. wearing a black bound brim fedora in Sherlock Holmes and figured that the Akubra Bogart with a bound edge in black would be a good close enough.

I want to by a Fed at some point but I'm worried about that, as I'm a smaller guy the HF and don't think the hat will actually look that good on me. But when my tax return comes in, I'll probably spring for a Fed....

What about two weeks from Aus to get to me in Tex?

I can't wait, and hope the weather still permits me wearing it.....

I was actually just looking at this hat too - since getting into this whole hobby, I have a newfound love for Fedoras in general and I am interested in expanding my headwear collection to more than just Indy fedoras.
Though I am interested in at least ONE more Indy brown and one grey, I would like to have a black and I am also looking for a men's version of the hat that the actress character (can't remember her name) was wering in the bar scene in Inglorious Basterds - it was beige with a copper ribbon.
If and when you get your Bogart, please post some pics - I am very curious to see how this looks worn.

Will do, should be 5-10 days from the day its sent according to my email. I emailed them about sizing since the Feds run half size smaller right now apparently. She told me the Bogart was dead on for size. So, I'm hoping it fits perfectly.....cuz postage to send back is not cheap....

Understood it's not an 'Indy' hat, but let's keep the hat discussions in the hat section, if for nothing but to just to keep things tidy. ;)

Even after these years, I still am an Akubra fan. I love the fact that this same company has been making hats for a long time. Plus, they make nice hats for the price. Fedora

Congrats, BackstageJack! Looking forward to pics.

I've recently bought a Campdraft and Squatter. Both are excellent hats, the Campdraft winning out on being the nicer of the two. BUT, my go to hat is still my Fed IV Deluxe. I'm contemplating a stingy brim purchase in the near-ish future.

How easy is it to change out ribbons? For example, I want a black fedora that I can interchange the color ribbon to match whatever color shirt or tie I am wearing, so I would want a stock of ribbons of pretty much every color available.

Well, ribbon is tacked on at various spots around the crown. Then the corners of the bow are tacket on too as well as the knot. It would not make sense to keep swaping ribbon on your hat as the process would take longer than its worth. I guess you could measure the ribbon, make it a two piece so that the bow is formed out of the same strip of ribbon as the rest, and then make the knot, and tack the bow onto the length of ribbon. It would have to be measured precisely so that you could slip the ribbon onto the hat but then it will be loose. It won't look right. My suggestion is to go with ribbon that is neutral, like black or dark grey, that will match whatever you wear, and then start branching out and getting hats with ribbon that matches exact clothes you own.

I have to say, though, that, in my opinion, that isn't worth it. I have this beautiful vintage linen suit from the 1940's that belonged to my wife's grandfather. I also have a rather nice vintage tie in a light pink color. I wear that suit and tie to day time events when I can. I wanted to have a hat made in silverbelly with a pink ribbon on it to match the outfit. After giving it some thought, it was the worst idea ever. Go with something that is wearable. Matching ribbon to shirts or ties can be nice, but can just look tasteless if not done right.

I got a mental picture of you in that hat and it wasn't pretty my friend! [it was something about having ladies who work for you... :anxious: :- ] Plus, silverbelly, I've discovered is quite "chameleon" like in that it takes on hues from your surroundings in ways you wouldn't believe. Or at least my Campdraft does.

What are the dimensions on your Campdraft? I've been thinking about getting one and silverbelly seemse like the color to go with.

I'm curious too. What is the crown height of the Akubra Campdraft? I'm thinking in the future, I may get one, but it depends on crown height, because my head is rather tall.

Yep, waiting anxiously now......it just snowed last night, and its been raining and all I've thought about was.....I could be wearing my hat in this, lol!

I haven't owned a fedora in almost 10 years.....I've been waiting out for one, odd that it took Sherlock Holmes to inspire me to buy one and not Indy......but my next buy is going to be a Fed. IV (tax refund!!), even if it winds up not looking good on me.

I'll have pics up asap.....

Anyone know if they send you a tracking number? I received an email stating that they were sending it out and if it took more then 14 days to call. But thats it....

For anyone interested, I just received my hat in the mail today. Posted some pics here:

The bogart is a good hat from what I can tell. I haven't owned a fedora in quite some time so maybe it wasn't what I was expecting, I thought the felt seems a little thin to me.....but all I've ever owned was a Stetson so maybe thats why.

Time will tell I supose, if its anywhere near the rep I hear about Akubra's it'll be a good buy in the end. Next on the list....Federation IV!!
