9ft bullwhip

Post by whiskyman »

I'd like to share some pictures of a bullwhip I made yesterday. It's a little over 9ft, in natural tan roohide. Hope you like it.

Looks very nice. Any reason you went with 9' instead of the traditional 8' or 10'?

Well actually I made the handle foundation and cut the strand sets the day before, so it was more than one day's work.
The reason it's a 9ft? I'm a great fan of the 9ft length - it looks pretty much like a 10 ft and handles a little bit like an 8ft. I find 10ft can be a little sluggish. An 8ft is wonderful to use but (to me) doesn't look quite as cool coiled up as a 10ft. I find 9ft to be the best of both worlds. \:D/

Wow! I'm very very impressed! Total agreement on the 9ft length. By far my favorite length! How does she handle?

Fantastic work!

I'm also a fan of the 9' whip. I had Bernardo make my Raiders a 9' and I couldn't be more happier with it. I use it all time. I totally agree about the length being just right.

And that whip looks amazing! Well done!

Very nice looking whip.

I agree with you on the reasons to make a 9-footer. There is a bit more time in getting good reactions out of a 10' and an 8' just looks a little light on the hip.

Glad you stuck it out and decided to show us this.

Keep up the good work.

Wow, I am repeatedly amazed at the level of talented whip makers on this board (that includes you too, Whiskyman!).

I love the tapered handle, nice touch!

Thank you all very much for the wonderful compliments. I've done one or two whips lately and am considering taking up the profession in earnest again - and this time not concentrating solely on Indy whips. We'll see. I moved house last year and now have a great workshop space which could be put to good use once I've fixed it up properly. Again, we'll see.
