My new "bad guy" gun!!!
My dad called me a few weeks ago to tell me he was sending a suprise my way.
Cool, I love surpises. However, I was totally not expecting this.....
My first thought was "Oh my God, he sent me a P38!!!"
My second thought was "Just like the one Indy used in LC to take out all thoses Nazis!!! "
After a little research, I discovered it is a 1942 Mauser made copy of the Walther (after the Walther factory was bombed).
I haven't had to a chance to fire it yet, but I did field strip it and gave it a nice oiling.
Hopefully, the next suprise he sends me is a S&W Hand Ejector with a 4" barrel
ps, ignore the date stamps on the pictures. I was so excited, I forgot to reset it.

Re: My new "bad guy" gun!!!
Great historical piece, kwad!
We have a P-38 as well. My Dad brought it back from the war. My brother has it now, I should get a few pics of it someday. (I got Dad's medals/decorations, my Bro.,being older than me, got the guns)
I believe the P-38 was more prefered by the Wehrmacht than the much more famous Luger. A newer design and more reliable. Safer too.
BTW, It's value resides in the fact in was "in the War". I would resist shooting that weapon and just keep it clean and stored in dry conditions.
Anyway, very nice!! Thanks for sharing!

Unfortunately, the numbers don't match between the slide/barrel and the frame.
So, it's more of a user than a colletor piece. (The frame has been re-stamped by the importer to match the slide/barrel). More than likely, it was assembled from surplus parts. I doubt it has seen any action in the war.
My dad has fired it many times and says it is very smooth and accurate.
I can't wait to take it to the range, but, for some reason there seems to be a shortage of 9mm shells in my area.

I've got one of those beauties too! It's a very sweet looking gun for sure. Mine will go to my youngest son... He's more of a gun guy!

That is some surprise - very nice! These are great pistols. I'll be heading up highway 39 to the Burro Canyon range next Saturday morning ( weather permitting - got rained out today ) which isn't too far from Ontario. If you decide to come out to the range that day, I can spare you a box of 9mm so you can get that ol' warhorse barking. I'll be bringing mine:

Re: My new "bad guy" gun!!!
The early war P-38's are perfectly safe to shoot. They are a good, servieable firearm. I have a late-war (44-45) P-38 that I do not shoot. Its double-action does not work, and it is very roughly finished. The topstrap that holds the springs in place is not held in place by screws. It is a piece of spring steel that is form fitted. These have been known to fly off during firing, losing all the components underneath.
