What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
Hey folks,
One of my news years' ideas was to wear my fedora more on a day-to-day basis. It's an Akubra Sydney in fawn, not too far off from the Indy models (I get plenty of Indy comments wearing it, to be sure.) So far, I've been wearing it with jeans or chinos, oxford shirts, and a heavy Carhartt coat. I've gotten lots of compliments, but I wanted to ask you all, who are much more used to your hats than I am, what do you wear with a fedora when not in full gear? What do you think it looks best with, and what would you absolutely not wear it with?
Thanks!

I think the Fedora looks good with everything...except maybe shorts and sandals with black socks.
Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
They look great with cargo shorts and a t-shirt, a suit, jeans and a polo, just about anything!

Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
Personally, I wouldn't do shorts and a fedora (although I have done rolled up pants with fedora). I'm not really interested in getting the whole Indy outfit, I have thei shirt, the bag and the hat. So usually my hats are mixed in with the rest of my wardrobe, which consists mostly of jeans and t-shirts, haha! I do try to keep some sort of outwear with a fedora (that's not a hoodie, like I would wear otherwise).

Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
I would say nearly anything wil do with a fedora, generally speaking. However, you should judge on a case-by-case basis which each specific hat. Some hats just look too dressy to dress down, some too casual to dress up. With something like a Sidney, I would wear it with long pants of some kind, and nearly any mode of dress (t-shirt, Aloha shirt, jeans, cargos, Carhartt, leather, sportcoat, etc.) except a tuxedo. It's a very versatile hat.
Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
I always wear my fedora even if it isn't fashionably accepted here.
I usually just go for a casual look... so it's jeans, my caterpillar boots, t-shirt. Sometimes I wear a button down shirt; rolled-up long sleeved shirt or a short sleeved one.

Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
Because I wear an Indy-style fedora like, 99.9% of the time, I can and do wear it with everything from t-shirts, cargo shorts, sandals, and hoodies, to suits. I have an olive green suit that looks dynamite with my brown Fed to top it off. Being a brown hat, it also looks right at home with all my earth tone summer stuff.
I have a couple of gray fedoras, but Im such a fan of brown that I almost never wear them. Occasionally, I'll wear a gray hat with a gray suit.

Are you referring to the infamous Red Hot Chilli Peppers' outfit from the time before Blood Sugar Sex Magic?VP wrote:I wouldn't wear my fedora with a tennis sock.
I mostly wear shirts and jeans, but I'd wear my fedoras with practically anything.

Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
I usually wear my fedora with jeans or khakis, a collared shirt or a sweater, and a nicer pair of leather shoe (generally my Aldens). I wouldn't wear it with sneakers or a t-shirt though. But that's just me!

Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
I've worn my Raiders Grey Traveling fedora with a suit and tie to the symphony and to the Broadway shows that play on campus at Arizona State University (both have hat checks), and I've worn my Raiders and CS brown fedora with just about anything. I think a straw panama goes better with my Hawaiian shirts than a felt fedora, but I look for any opportunity to wear a real hat.
Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
I wear daily my Raiders hats with suits, but also with t-shirts, sweaters, or cardigan. You could wear it with anything.
The same hat change look by what you match with: vintage, casual, formal, everything, if the hat is the right one for your shape!

Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
If ever I do wear sneakers with he hat, I use my brown leather addidas which has almost the same color and texture as my hat. It's actually a weird pair of sneakers cuz there is no logo of any kind on it. The only time you'll know what brand it is is when you take a lok inside.
Although, I only wore those before I got my Christy's.

One of the things I never do is wear a fedora with shorts or sneakers. Now I'm not saying you can't do the shorts and sneakers thing but it's not my cup of tea. It's mostly worn with a pair of jeans and workboots as I'm always doing something around the house. Other than that, unless the color of my lid is clashing with a suit or such, I'm good to go.

Yep, this is my "dirty" gear. I am wearing it in the field doing excavation, and that king of stuff.
My "city" gear consist of jeans, boots or sneakers, t-shirt or plain shirt. Fedora and bag are always with me.

I'm having a hard time NOT wearing my Henry without 'like colors' (browns and tans).
I'm still a little affraid it will look wrong with other colors - though I haven't tired with a black T and jeans yet.
I'm just excited to always go 'Indy' when I put it on, that I almost have to put the rest of the gear on!

Here are some contemporary fashion photos from a blog called The Sartorialist.
So apparently the fedora can be "in". However I think the two gentlemen need some hat help but they are heading in the right direction.

Mitch,
You're a handsome guy - and I mean that in the most heterosexual way possible! You wear a fedora well, looks very natural on you.
When I get around to getting a grey Henry, I hope to get some nice photos taken like that.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks Fox is a cutie... ...
As for me. I wear a fedora every day. Whether that be with slacks and a long sleeve or jeans and a t-shirt. I usually do jeans and a long sleeve. I hardly ever wear sneakers, unless I'm working out, and if I do I opt for the Chuck Taylor's or some skateboarding shoes like Vans, not those slip on Vans, the big ones with the big laces...but I usually do boots or dress shoes, depending on the occasion. I have been known to wear a vest and a jacket when appropiate...and sometimes even when it is overdressing. But always there is a hat on my head.

Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
I actually don't have any Indiana Jones gear other than the brown fedora look-alike (Fed IV), but what I wear with my fedora is well, my everyday clothes. I occasionally wear it with a sport coat as well, but I don't actually own a leather jacket of any kind yet... Most of the time, I wear polos, dress shirts, slacks, and jeans. I have a tendency to use t-shirts strictly as undershirts, I just don't think I look good wearing bare t-shirts, for some reason. I almost feel naked...
Inspector Zenigata from Lupin III wore that combo once in an episode. It's an obscure series here in the U.S., but as far as anime goes, it's actually pretty famous in Japan, and is one of the first major anime series ever, having its roots in the 60s. Anyway, random, but yeah... that show was one of my top favorites on Adult Swim.

Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
Apparently there is no statute of limitations on crimes of... fashion.
But back on topic: when I'm doing stuff around the house and yard, I'll wear my Fed IV fedora with pretty much anything, because the idea is still to give the hat a "lived in" look; plus, it makes a great "general purpose" hat to wear while doing outdoor chores. When going out in public, however, jeans or khaki slacks and a casual button-down shirt are the minimum. I personally do not care for the fedora-with-t-shirt or fedora-with-surf-shorts look.

Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
I think the real question is when do you wear full gear? I know for me, I typically wear a hat. Rarely an Indy hat, and even rarer still, more than one piece of Indy gear at a time. As much as I love my Indy gear, being caught wearing two or more gear pieces just feels too costumey! Heck, I even try avoiding leather jackets when I can to avoid the association.
To answer the OP though, I typically save my fedoras for winter wear. So typically, you'd find me wearing a parka to match.

Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
I will wear a fedora normally with dress clothing all the way down to jeans, button down shirts and ankle boots (never sneakers). If coat weather, will wear one regardless of the shirt. I have a few well worn fedora that I will wear with jeans, ankle boots and a t-shirt. As others have said, some fedora are just too dressy looking for that level of casual wear.
Indy Gear: Usually will not wear the Indy Jacket with the Indy fedora. Will wear the Indy fedora with other coats/jackets (usually canvas). Indy jacket with maybe a silver belly or non-brown color. Sometimes a plain ball cap. Will wear the Alden Indy boots all the time. Most people have no idea what an Indy boot is.
Everyone will have their own style which cool.

I've tried to wear the fedora, but I can't get past feeling in costume. Indy is a constant shadow when I wear it. So I've switched to a Stetson Open Road and get the same "feel" without feeling "Indy." It's like I've taken his lead but made it my own.

Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
I’m in the same boat as you, temple_runner, I can’t shake the “trying to look like Indiana Jones” feeling with the Indy hat, in no small part because the dimensions look ridiculous on my small head. So I wear one of my numerous vintage kids that fit my frame, and give me the KB look that is reminiscent of Indy. In fact I got my last compliment on looking good in the Indiana Jones look when I was wearing a vintage grey cavanaugh and a not so Indy leather jacket.

Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
Well, I guess I'll jump in and say it must be related to age.
I'm at that age I just don't care. I wear my fedora with anything.
It's a tool. A covering for the head to keep the sun off in summer, and head warm in winter.
It keeps the rain and snow off my noggin.
I've been mistaken for Indiana Jones, a cowboy, and Clyde Beatty the lion tamer (for those older folks who know who old Clyde was), so it really makes no difference.
I just nod and keep on walking.
I actually had a teenager standing behind me in line at Wal-Mart recently and noticed he was looking at my fedora and jacket I was wearing. I looked him right in the eye and said '....and when reach my age, you can wear this stuff too!"
I thought he was going to completely lose it.
Anyway, it doesn't matter. Wear it with what ever you're comfortable with. If you're worried about what others think, then maybe you need to leave it in the box and just admire it at home. No need to stress over it.
You, too, will eventually discover as you age that either folks really don't care, or YOU don't care. Just enjoy it.

Re: What do you wear with your fedora when not in gear?
I get Indiana Jones comments with some regularity. If it's a passing comment as I'm walking by my go to response is, "Fortune and Glory!" If it's in a more engaged conversation I respond, "Yeah, I'm a huge Indiana Jones fan." But, people who see me regularly know I wear a fedora daily and it's just part of my wardrobe.
Being in TX there is a sizable hat wearing population, though mostly western styles. Hat wearers can spot quality so regardless of style I've had many compliments on my fedoras based on their craftsmanship. I do the same when I see a well made and/or well used western hat and will strike up a conversation with the wearer.
I still laugh that on balance I get more "Hey, Indy!" comments when I'm wearing non-Indy fedoras, either by color or style.
I consider them all to be compliments and move on.
Regards,
Indiana Jeff

Tennessee, being the home of 'country music', is about the same.....though I've been surprised as the number of fedoras I'm seeing on a regular basis.

I'm absolutely the same. I'm too old to care what other people think but in all honesty, I don't get many comments one way or the other. No one seems to care which suits me fine. I'm comfortable wearing my fedora in all situations.Michaelson wrote:Well, I guess I'll jump in and say it must be related to age.

Actually, I get MORE comments when I'm NOT wearing one.
I left mine in the car to run into my local post office one day, and I got more @#$% remarks thrown at me from the mail clerks who have known me for years! I never did THAT again!
