Del Carpio 5' LC Whip Has Arrived! See pics and Video!
Bernardo finished my new 5' LC whip.
As many of you may know, I have quite a growing collection of Indy whips. Most of them are 10 footers. I won't even get into it all here.
But I thought you might like to see the sneak preview that Bernardo sent me today.
I wanted this 5 footer (besides for the pure fun of it!) for situations when I may be impersonating/performing as Indy.
I may have a job working an Oscar night party. As much as I would like to carry an 8-10 footer, its just not practical for actually cracking indoors. This baby is what I'm planning for my solution. With this whip, I can say, "all right, stand back!" NOT, "Okay, everybody, let's all go outside--and back WAY up! GIMME ROOM!!!" I've also got a job performing at kids parties from time to time, and I thought this would be a great whip to use in tight spots, small yards, and even inside someone's home.
She's cute ain't she? I think I will start calling her "Elsa". Yeah, I like that . . .
More pictures and a review when she arrives next week!

Love Bernardo's work! Especially on my own whip.
What color is that one, Daren? Looks a little darker than the standard natural tan!

It looks like classic Indy whip in CS colors That's 7th Indy whip in your collection, maybe it's time to hug something different

Daren
Again, a beautiful work of Bernardo, really is a very bice whip. I'm anxious to receive my whip made for Bernardo, I believe that this week sends it for me. It's a 8 foot LC stile.
Best regards.
Gaucho.

VEry well done.....
5ft starting 12 plait and ending 6plait is still a torture for me.
Look how smooth is the braiding all through the entire thong. Dropped strands are invisible. Remember there must be 6 strands dropped.....in less than 5ft......

Graeme,
Thank you very much! I will certainly do that!
Jeanfifi,
Not being a whipmaker, I can't say how difficult it must be drop those strands in such a short lenght, but I can imagine!
Gaucho,
I'll bet Bernardo was working on our whips at the same time. I know he spent a few weeks on mine getting it just perfect!
Tomek,
Yes, this is indeed my 7th Indy whip. And yes, I'm ready to take a break. I don't foresee myself buying any more Indy whips in the future. Not 'roo ones anyway. I am currently waiting for Rhett Kelley to make me a matched pair of 5' "Young Indy" whips, but I'm not buying any 'roo hide whips for at least a year, and no more "Indy" whips.
There's no reason for any man to have this collection, except for the fact that there are so many talented whipmakers out there; it's hard not to want to see and feel what everyone can do. My friends and family don't understand, but I know that you all do. I love the nuances that every whip and every whipmaker bring: the differences in SA details, the variations of color, the length of each whip, the grain, the feel, the smell of the leather, the knowledge that I have a whip from a whipmaker who incorporates a specific detail or attribute . . . all of these aspects carry meaning for me. This is why I also have a half dozen drumsets . . .
But, its time to give the bank account a breather. At least in the way of whips. Right now I've got a hankerin' for some hats that is hard to satisfy. But I've outilined a wishlist, and I'm not allowing myself to pay for anything with a credit card. If I'm not earning the money from either a) selling things on ebay, be they Indiana Jones or drum-related, b)performing as Indiana Jones or some other character, or c)playing shows with my band, then I've decided that I can't afford it. I'm on a strict diet right now of paying down my credit cards with my regular money, etc.
Anyway . . .
I will post again when the whip arrives and put up a few more pics!
Thanks for looking and commenting everyone, and thank you, Bernardo, for another EXCELLENT hand-made piece of functional art!

Re: New Del Carpio 5' Last Crusade Whip--Arriving Soon!
Got the whip a couple of days ago. And here's what I wrote to Bernardo:
"Your whip is beyond what I even dreamed of! It is absolutely beautiful, the plaiting, I think, is even nicer than my 9 footer, and the color and shellac make it one of the prettiest whips I have! And it cracks like a dream, naturally! It's everything that I hoped for and more! This is EXACTLY what I need when I want to be able to crack a whip in tight spots and work around audiences. I'm sure I could have gone with a 6 footer, but the 5 foot length, the way you've constructed it, and working in the LC details, make it absolutely what I wanted. Thank you so much for putting in the extra time; I want you to know that your hard work has not gone unnoticed--it was well worth the wait! I'm much much more than pleased! I'm ecstatic! "
This pretty much sums it up. And since the photos I took when I got it out of the box can't capture anything better than Bernardo's pics already have above, I'll just say that I'm VERY pleased. I will post a video when I get a chance, though, so stay tuned.
This is Del Carpio #2 for me, and I already have plans for #3.
A happy whip cracker,
DHW

Can I request a couple handle comparison shots? One of your two Del Carpios and Morgan, and the other with ALL the indy whip handles? Thanks in advance! You rock!

And here she is, by request, next to my other Del Carpio and my Morgan.
Remember, my Morgan is from 2001; it has one of the shortest handles of a Morgan I've ever seen.
L-R: Morgan 10', Del Carpio 5', Del Carpio 9'.
Then L-R: Same whips above: Morgan, Del Carpio, Del Carpio, then Nolan 10' and Strain 10'.

The shorter whip really helps in close quarters. The control and flow seem to be very good! Great whip and Great video!!!DarenHenryW wrote:Here she is in person! Haha.
