Post by Holt »

Here is the latest. I went for a WoS look on this one. but with the flash the creases dont come out as good as it would under some tracklights. ah well..

in this picture you can see the tall crown shape with the very deep camel humps, the rasor sharp pinch and the turn.

Looks like you're ready for a chase through the streets of Cairo!
One of the nicer Raiders lids I've seen - well done!
(now lets get some shots of you wearing it with the rest of your gear!) ;)

Holt, even though I'm not really a fan of the WoS style myself, I just wanted to congratulate you on yet another superb bashing job  :notworthy: You have a great eye for detail my friend! :TOH:

Looks great. I'd deepen the center dent a little more but that's about it. Looks perfect. You really have a talent for creasing hats.

yes. this is my fed 4. so this proves again that the fed can do it if you want it to. all it needs is some serious work.

Can you give us some of your playXplay for getting a Fed IV into that shape.
I'm thinking about the center dent esp. Amazing!

Great looking as usual Holt, and very impressive. WoS is one of my favourite styles as well.
Just one question, is that the same FedIV like in your earlier posts just rebashed or a new FedIV?

Looks good. The WOS hat that most want from me is the one where he is facing off the cobra. It seems to almost be a different hat, the cobra one. But, could be only due to the lightng and filming. Plus, the cobra hat had slipped back to the no turn deal. Fedora

Really!
I'm going to have to go back and check that out.

...Ok...
Just checked and you're right. The cobra hat does look un-turned indeed.

Here is what I was talking about. The pinch is more relaxed and the hat turned back to where it would be , if no turn had been used. Just so you know what I was talking about. The hat changes quite a bit throughout this film, so one WOS may not look like another WOS. Many have wanted this hat from me, but I have to point out, that if worn straight on the head, it won't look the same.

I totally see it.
Pinch almost looks SoC. Just the pinch mind you, not the rest of the hat.

And this is the one people want you to replicate Steve? Do you give them a turned Raven Bar and say "line up the tags and wear it;)"?
Interesting.

But I guess it is about as iconic as you can get and at first blush, maybe it's "THE Indy hat" in someone's mind. And like we've noted many times around here, it all comes down to how you see it.

Thanks for the pic!

When I was fine tuning my block the cobra hat was a key test for me because the side / rear 3/4 was never quite right. When I got that to work everything fell into place. (Note here I had given it a generic pinch so that vertical pinch line is off) Anyway, my point is the lines you see in these shots are of the IDENTICAL hat to all of the other studio scenes I tested. There's nothing special at all about the shape of the WoS hat from that perspective. The problem with a stock Fed among other hat models out there is that you simply can't get them to do the "pushing the dragon" shot that Holt shows (see below link) AND get those 3/4 side angles right. The curves are always off one way or another.

I'm always pretty impressed with the amount of fine tuning and hard work you guys put into your hats - I think we have members here that know more about Indy's fedora than Spielberg himself!
Though my Henry will always be my 'main' Indy hat, I wanted to get another to play around with more and do a Raiders w/turn, full SOC style - I'm tossing around the idea of either a Christy's or an Uptowner. Not sure which has the 'better' color though, any suggestions?

Nice side-kick, Holt! What style do you study? That looks very text-book TaeKwon-Do (I'm a 2nd dan), but I'm not sure that that style is popular in your part of the world.

(and just to stay on topic so the mods are happy) I think Indy was a martial artist as well, as demonstrated by the great roundhouse he throws in SOC and the frontkick against the mechanic :TOH:

Ive studied tae-kwon-do, and have seen the movie hundreds of times, and I never thought for a second that any of that was martial arts. Just good, improvisational fighting. Just my .16 bit.

okay. I just rotated the hat to a no turn and just look how the tight front pinch loosend up and became almost identical to the cobra scene hat pinch. with this I believe that there was just only one hat used in the WOS but when shooting the cobra scene the hat was rotated back to a no turn.

bear in mind that the angle is way of but you get the idea. I also stood under some lights that really brings out the shadows in the bash job.

all in all, Im pretty happy with with how this turned out. :D

Good show Indiana Holt. This is the first time I've seen someone do this in pics. Turn the "turned hat" back straight. Suddenly, similar little nuances show up that the film hat has. Put a cobra in front of you and you've got it!!!

Does anyone have a side-by-side of the WOS vs the SOC vs the 'intro' (waterfall)?

Wow Holt, that is e very smooth approach to a not so common style of a Raiders Fedora. Once again, a sharp eye for the details.

Though I love your avatar of Donner Superman, that side kick has to be your new one. That has to be a first in the Indy community.
