We recently have redecorated our third bedroom and have turned it into a guest room using several nice earth tones. The walls are bare. Believe it or not I asked my wife if I could have the room double as my whip display room! I stressed that most of my whips in addition to being very functional were works of art from some of the most notable whip makers in the world. Well low and behold she agreed! So after some thought on the best way to do it I went and made a prototype plaque an hour ago. I can make them in singles, doubles and triple holders. I am looking for comments and/or suggestions.
Here is what I did, and I apologize for the crudeness and the ugly wall-its hanging in my spray booth :
Using a block of cedar and my band saw I made a saddle in the approximate arch of the curve of the whip
Then I popped over to my lathe and turned a 3 inch long peg with a 1/2" diameter mounting collar. I turned it so that it had a rounded end and a saddle in the middle for the handle to rest in. Mount to a piece of oak.
Hang the 12' Black Mamba (Joe Strain 12 footer) and see how it looks:
And it looks like it works for the stock whip as well (Winrich 6 nylon 6 footer):
The final units will be made from various exotic woods complimenting the various whip colors and the Oak and Tiger Maple bed that I made for the room.

I like it Bob. Thanks for sharing your photos. I have been debating on what to do with my whips. I don't have a good idea for how to store or display my whips yet. Kept on debating with the wood idea. Is there any stress on the whip at any point or anything of that nature? I do look forward to see the final photos of the project.

Re: Whip display plaque-prototype
This is what I made
I got the idea from some of Paul Nolan's pics.
Since that picture was taken I moved the bottom board up to the bottom of the top one, because all the bullwhips would slide off if they weren't on just right. It's really easy to make, just a board, a few peaces of a dowel, sandpaper, and some varnish.
BTW I like yours vary much

Very nice Bob, I really like the way your prototype design cradles the whip.
If there is any pressure points where the whip is resting on the wood, consider laying down a thick strip of natural tan cowhide over them to act as a bit of cushion.
Look forward to seeing the finished plaques on display with the collection
Neat set up too ST, I thought I recognized some of the elements of Pauls old whip rack, with yours.

Re: Whip display plaque-prototype
Hi Bob. I like the way it turned out. It seems to me the whip rests with good support and with minimal stress on any part of the whip.
Congrats! I may make something similar for myself.
ATB,
Aldo.
