Indy Compass to go with my tape measure (PICS)
I recently posted a pictures of my vintage Keuffel & Esser Co. Dartmouth tape measure in the tape thread. I took a look in the Keuffel & Esser Co. catalogue and found compasses, so I decided to find one. Here's my new old compass. These are the pictures of it from the auction, I haven't received it yet.
Keuffel & Esser Co. Pocket Compass Dated 1931
Model 5613R - radius luminous indicator for nightobservation.

Very nice! I'd be interested to know how accurate it is compared to a new compass when you get it. Good find!

Here's a very informative site.
http://www.purgatory.net/kornelia/compass/samerican.htm
The Keuffel & Esser Co. was established in 1867. The K&E
factory was in Hoboken, NY. Keuffel & Esser compasses
are one of the best American made compasses of their era.
There's a bunch here.

Funny, I've been keeping my eye out for one of those to go on the other end of the Albert Chain attached to my pocket watch. I even like the fact at that one is marked out in quadrants instead of azimuth. It looks great.
Cheers!

Re: Indy Compass to go with my tape measure
I took some pics of my newly arrived compass. It's small and VERY cool, I love the instruction sheet in the case, I don't think I'll remove them since they have the copyright of 1931 at the bottom.
Am I following these instructions correctly?
I'm near Seattle (23 degrees East)
I would align the needle to the 23 mark RIGHT of the North arrow so that the arrow is pointing to true north, correct?

Interesting too is the small instructions and basic chart to assume the declination for the particular area that one is in. Those have changed several times since that was printed in 1931. Several of the old surveying books that I have have declination charts in them that jibe with the notations in the lid of the compass but differ greatly with the current chart that came with my Suunto compass.

Novices when lost think the compass is wrong. Remedy - carry two.
Nice piece.

Having done a little research my compass seesm to be an Italian version of the WW1 Verners Patern 1917 model (pic below). Probably older than I thought!

I would align the needle to the 23 mark RIGHT of the North arrow so that the arrow is pointing to true north, correct?
Basically. But declination changes yearly as the magnetic poles drifts, and is currently 16° 57' East, changing 0° 10' West per year according to NOAA's online Geophysical Data Center's calculator, located here.
Good looking compass, BTW.
Cheers!
