Re: My new SOC Fed4
That's spectacular -- just the look I would love to get outta my Fed IV. No matter how I tweak mine, the crown just doesn't look tall enough.
That front pinch and those deep, squared front dents are superb! Nice work!
What size is your Fed?

Can you share the details on how you accomplished this with the Fed4?

Magical; I'm not too big a fan of the Fed 4 myself, but the things you can do with one are striking.

Every time I look at this hat, Eric, it amazes me. It's also hands-down proof that you can make a SA SoC fedora out of a FedIV. Mind you, I have NO idea how you pull it off, but it can be done!
Re: My new SOC Fed4
oh yes! I have completly renovated this hat. its more detailed now. only thing I need to do is some bowe work.Yojimbo Jones wrote:Love the attention to detail!

Re: My new SOC Fed4
yes. you are very right. it can be done. the only thing I struggle with is the back of the hat. its good looking by all means. but not really the same as the SOC hat. ah well, who sees that anyway? I dontbinkmeisterRick wrote:Every time I look at this hat, Eric, it amazes me. It's also hands-down proof that you can make a SA SoC fedora out of a FedIV. When you ever get to visit the old cheese pasture we call the Netherlands, please bring it along because I really want to marvel over it up close.

Tell you what, I'll steal your hat, put it on my head, and run. That way you'll see the back of your hat!Indiana Holt wrote:yes. you are very right. it can be done. the only thing I struggle with is the back of the hat. its good looking by all means. but not really the same as the SOC hat. ah well, who sees that anyway? Re: My new SOC Fed4
Does that mean we might see you there next year?
Re: My new SOC Fed4
it sure looks like it now. but in my life there is allways something that comes in between. but from tis point it looks like I will make it next year....
Re: My new SOC Fed4
I'm with davidb. I cannot seem to get a deep center dent in a Fed. Kudos to you just for that!
Terrific looking hat. Looks terrific (and very SA). You can see all of the hard work you put in getting it that way (why did the movie people have it so much easier! ).

Re: My new SOC Fed4
I think because they put the hat through some abuse that not many of us (aside from Jason) would ever do to a hat we've spent good money on and probably really care about.crismans wrote:I'm with davidb. I cannot seem to get a deep center dent in a Fed. Kudos to you just for that!

but, if you want to sit on it, roll it up, squish it 6 ways to sunday...who knows what you might get.

Re: My new SOC Fed4
Aside from the distressing, you can't really "fix" the Fed's shape, including the back, as Holt said (esp. the 3/4 rear), to make it any more S.A. than when you pull it out of its box (without reblocking it entirely). That when combined with the particular angles of the curves to the top affects the way the whole top of the hat appears. You could get it looking good from one angle, but it would throw out another even worse as the felt has to come from somewhere.RaidersBash wrote:I think because they put the hat through some abuse that not many of us (aside from Jason) would ever do to a hat we've spent good money on and probably really care about.

Re: My new SOC Fed4
i have it look SA from the fornt, the top and the sides. the only thing that look alittle of is that round mushrom bulge like back of the SOC fedora. I have the back of the hat look more like the temple hat.
thanx again guys

Looks great a always. I think this is an improvement over the last one but it may be my bias towards clean hats...

Re: My new SOC Fed4
That is the problem I always had. This was a key spot I focused on when working on a block. Something had to happen on the back of the hat to be able to drop the rear of the center bash to 3-1/2" from the brim, yet not cause the hat to taper. My Federations would always taper when I tried to go that low. Plus there didn't seem to be enough hat left on top to get the "fullness" that the Raiders hat had. When I left the bash higher (i.e. 4") so as not to taper the hat, the hat looked more like the Temple of Doom hat from the back.Indiana Holt wrote:i have it look SA from the fornt, the top and the sides. the only thing that look alittle of is that round mushrom bulge like back of the SOC fedora.
