My whip experiences for the last year

Post by ST »

I haven’t posted anything for a while now, so this is going to make up for that.

As the title says some of these stories go back to Nov. 08. I meant to post all of these things as they happened but procrastination set in every time, and it all built up untill now. With the arrival of two new whips I thought it would be a good time to finally post this.

First off was my trip to Disney World. Of course I went to the stunt show, which was great, but after the crowd left I went down and asked the MC lady if I could talk to the Indy stunt double about the whip. She told me to wait at the back of the line of little kids getting their pictures taken with him. When all the kids were gone I started talking to him about whips, and told him I make whips as a hobby, at that he asked if I would like to see the whip, I said sure, and in a few minutes he came back with a vary dark vary well used whip. After talking for a few more minutes he asked me if I would like to crack the whip, well I couldn’t say no, so after two figure eights I had thoroughly Impressed them all. They told me, kind of jokingly, that in two years when I’m eight-teen, and if I haven’t grown any more they’d give me a job.

I forgot to take a picture of the whip but I did get a picture of me holding it so we can see the handle, not that zooming in helps. I also have a video of me cracking the whip, if any body wants to see it I can put it on you tube and post a link?

In January before I left for Africa I ordered a 6 ft. raiders Strain and about a week after I got back it arrived on the same day I finished making a rather sad pair of 4 plt. stock whips. So three whips in one day is pretty sweet, but there was some very icy snow, bad for whips, solution “spring crop circle”. Image

During this time I had already ordered my DM but the wait was a couple months, so on my way back from Africa l stayed the night at my aunts house in Bothell, and the next day went to DMs shop to see if they had started my whip and ask a few questions. Unfortunately they were still a few weeks away from making my whip but I asked if I could come down and pick it up my self the day they were finishing it. They said sure, and about a week later they phoned and told me that Megan was sick so they would not be making my whip at that time, but they said that I could still come. So I did and had a great time and learned a lot, tho no whip. A week later I got an awesome whip 1 week before my birthday.

For the rest of the spring and summer I made my first 10 ft. and a few other whips. Strain 6 ft top, mine in the middle, DM 10 ft bottom.

This fall I got bored with my stock whips and decided to get my self a matched pair from Mr. Schultz. He did a wonderful job and on Dec. 31 I got a beautiful set of whips, although it was snowing quite wet and since then it has become very crusty. I still haven’t been able to try them out.
This was the picture Mr. Schultz sent me.

I also just like this pic, If you can't read my shirt it says "it seemed like a good idea at the time".

Wow that was a lot, If you guys want to see more pic’s let me know.

Great to hear your experiences of this last year, especially at Disney World, it reminds me of when I went down after the show and talked to the double and got to crack the whip also. Here is a picture of the whip that they had at the time I went.

Keep up the good work and having your skills grow as both a whip cracker and maker.

Great post ST, Looks like you have had quite a year.

Thats great that you had a chance to visit David Morgan, as well as do a bit of cracking at Disney. I wouldn't mind seeing more photos and that video either. I looked at a few of them you have a nice collection of whips.

That matched pair of Russell Shultz stockwhip look really nice too, look forward to hearing how you like them.

Ok here's the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bma45YNGwm8 I didn't do anything more than slow figure eights because I didn't want to embarrass myself by rapping the whip around my head.

The Whip I was making in the last picture is a 8 ft 12 plt vary heavy. It was kinda funny, when I was at DMs shop I asked him what he thought, he looked at it, cracked once or twice and the first thing he said was "well it's brute heavy for one thing". :-k

And here is the whip, on the left is mine, on the right is Strain's http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr27 ... G_9964.jpg

I like the video!
you must have been very excited to crack the whip! you've done simple but excellent figures, congrats man!
I guess the stuntman must have been very surprised too! ;)

Just one thing: it seems (on the pictures with Mr Morgan holding your whip) you've done an excellent work.....maybe you wouldn't mind posting some close up please?

Anyway, big story and bravo again!

JP

BTW: when you write "the whips on the left" you mean the Joe's Strain's whips?

One thing about David Morgan is he is very honest when you ask him about a whip you've made. I've been told he does this because you learn better by an honest critique than fake compliments...but he also praises you when you get things right!

I vividly remember the first time he told me I got it right!

Thanks everyone.

Yah, I was very nerves, and the stunt men did seem quite surprised. :whip:

Well I was just surprised when Mr. Morgan told me it was "brute heavy", because I had heard that he likes a heavy whip. Other than that, he told me what I did rite and what I didn't, which I appreciate.

Hello ST,

I'm a whip performer and live about an hour away from disney and get to see the show a lot.
I'm only sixteen and I'm dying to learn how to make whips and would love to know what kind of books and
websites are good for learning on making whips. Please reply and help a fellow young whip cracker.

Thanks,

Louie Foxx's blog I a great place to pick up tips. http://bullwhips.org/
And I highly recommend getting his e-book. http://bullwhips.org/bullwhip_store/vie ... oductid=20 It helped me a lot.

How to Make Whips, Whips and Whipmaking, 2nd Edition, and Braiding Fine Leather are whip making bibles. http://www.davidmorgan.com/index.php?cPath=7_11_196

Australian Plaiters & Whipmakers Association, and their forum. http://www.apwa.org.au/

Midwestwhips is also a great place to learn things. http://www.midwestwhips.com/ It is also the best place to get roo hides in north America that I've found.

And last but not least is this wonderful place, I read it almost every day but I don't post vary much (I save it all up for one massive news letter  ).

BTW I think it's really cool to see another aspiring whip maker my age.

Well... my first 7 were made 13 years ago. The rest have less than a year in the making. I was a little afraid I'd have to start from scratch again, but hopefully, didn't.
