Does ANYONE have a TOD??

Post by generalFROSTY »

It seems that generally, gearheads tend to go for the Raiders or Crystal Skull - I know a lot of you have no love for the TOD fedora, but I would like to see pics of one that anyone here may have. I promise not to burn you at the stake. \:D/

A little bit? :D
I actually never got around to reading all thier fedora history before so that was a good reminder to do so. Very informative. You know, I could almost see in my head a History Channel type specail on the Indy Fedora while I was reading....now that would be cool.

I don't think it is as bad as people make it out to be. It's no Raiders but it's a nice hat. Whenever I get some time to make myself a couple of hats I won't one from each movie and one from the YIJ TV show.

John, How tapered do you get a TOD? Is the taper built into the block, or is it something you let the felt do naturally?

It seems people shy away from the TOD because of the taper. From what I've read, when a Raiders, or other fedora starts to taper it's time for a reblock.

There's another thread floating around here where I posted pics of the TOD that John made for me. I really love it and think the look suits me better than the Raiders look (which is my favorite hat, surprise, surprise).

But, like Bending Oak has said, the cockpit hat suffers from Willy grabbing the hat. Indy takes it back and puts it on his head, without fixing the "smushes" caused by Willy. Not saying it was a great looking hat to begin with, but that treatment sure didn't help.

That being said, i agree that the bridge hat is a nice hat. I also like the "Punching out the guard" hat where Indy has just woken up from the black sleep. Also the campfire hat is pretty nice as well.

The Trimotor hat is one of the licensed Stetsons put in the movie for product placement, while the rope bridge fedora is a stock 1980's Herbert Johnson Poet. It looks exactly like my late 90's model:

I'm told that the Christy's hat and the HJ Poet come from the same factory, same block, but with a different name. Like that generic cerial you see at the supermarket.
If I ever wanted a display hat of a different version, I would prob go with a Christy's. From what I have seen here and on youtube it looks like a good Indy hat - but I have heard they don't stand up to abuse.
Are there any factory hats that make a good TOD style? I ask because the Christys, HJ Poet, Akubra all seem to be best suited for a Raiders style.

I think most of the taper seen in the ToD fedora(s) can be attributed to it having probably the deepest center dent out of all of the film hats.
FYI: You can get a great suspension bridge hat out of a Fed IV. Just keep those side dents very shallow. ;)

I must say that I'm keen on the TOD hat as well. I love raiders however the dimensions are a little to big. The TOD ( to me) has a sleeker profile that fits my face/head far better.

Here's a couple of pics of my Penman ToD. Like IndianaSean, I love the Raiders look but I think the Temple looks better on me.

I think when it boils down to it, you have to go with a hat that suits YOU best, that looks good on you. With everyone having different head shapes, not everyone is going to look appropriate in the ever-popular Raiders.
But that's the truly great thing about Indy gear. There is no 'one' hat. If there were JUST the Raiders hat, fans would not have the choices available to get a true Indy hat that suits them the best.

I've got a Temple Of Doom, its in the basement, just through the spiked wall chamber, I have to tell the Thugees to keep the demonic chanting down sometimes. :CR:
