Removing the liner from a Fed IV

Any tips on how to remove the liner from a Fed IV?

Will there be any residue, like glue left behind?

That's the only thing I don't like about the Federations. It looks like they use a hot glue gun in two spots on the sides in order to tack the liner in. If it were a water based glue, there'd be no problem, but sadly, the glue is tough. You do NOT want to simply yank it out. You need to take some care because it may take a little of the felt with it and leave residue on the inside of the hat. If you use a very sharp blade and take your time, you can minimize the amount of felt that will remain to the glue. Still, it's quite annoying.

This is not a detriment to the stability of the hat, however, nor will it be an issue when reblocking. I've never had any issues with my Federations after removing the liner. I just wish that if they were going to glue them in, that they'd use a water based glue, because then removing the liner would be a cinch and the glue could be washed out.

Would sweat weaken the glue bond of a water-based glue?

I've never had an issue as such, but then again, if I ever put a liner back into a hat, I usually just lay it in and allow the sweat to fold over the edges. It still stays in place, glue or not. The best way is to have the liners stitched in like Adventurebilt, for one, does.

If you do decide to glue a liner in, use a small dot of Elmer's glue. You don't need a lot, lust a few dots should work once dry.

I remove the liner every summer and hold it in place in the winter with a few short strips of double sided carpet tape. works a treat.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.

I tried it and it was easy. It also makes it easier to make a straight bash when you can see what's happening from the inside of the hat.
