Whips look good in Iron Man 2

I'm fairly sure they motion captured real whips, they hang right and seem to move right too. Find the trailer, check it out.

James is quite right. The whips look good in this, (better whip action than in Indy 4, and that's so sad.)

I've seen some behind the scenes footage now, and they're actual "whips." Look to be made of yellow rubber material, (could be yellow nylon, couldn't tell...It was from the "Race Scene" in the trailer, and the footage I saw wasn't great.) So, it looks like for SOME of it at least, they actually Motion TRACKED, (not captured,) the actual whips Mickey was using, and rotoscoped the electrical effects over them. So, good on Mickey Rourke for REALLY learning that nifty crossover pattern because it looks good on screen, (though the whips might not have ACTUALLY been cracking, or even been designed to crack.)

Sweet trailer. I just wish they'd captured more whip action. Definitely one to see.

These are the whips that were used. After filming, one of the whips was given to Rourke as a gift and I was asked to make another to complete the pair once again.
I think I made these back in April.
White is very hard to keep bright white. It turns yellow too easily.

Beautiful whips, Joe! And congratulations! What is the length on this pair?

Loving my matched 4' pair, by the way! Thank you! And I think I'm gonna keep them the way they are, instead of having you put the accents on the ringknots. We'll do them that way for the next pair! ;)

Thanks! These were 6 foot with 12 inch spring steel handles.
Glad you like the pair. Short whips are a lot of fun!

Thanks so much for the reply, Joe!

The "Behind the Scenes" footage I saw was badly white balanced, so they could very well have been bright white. White would be easy to motion track.

I honestly figured they'd use nylon or something cheaper than kangaroo, as the whips are going to be covered by CGI for most of the shots. I'd have figured rubber, (as they're a stunt prop kinda deal,) but from the shots I saw they sure as HECK didn't move like a rubber whip.

This explains why they move so pretty. They're Strains! ;)

So, Mickey Rourke actually LEARNED that stuff. Well, props to him. Better than we've seen in...well...just about EVERYTHING from a featured character in a film in...well...probably since Doug Fairbanks!

I'll actually see this one in the theater. :D :D

All the best, and Happy Holiday Cracking!

So we know where the whips came from . . . Who provided the training?

Anyone know or think they can find out?

The stuff that I've seen, (which admittedly AIN'T MUCH,) doesn't LOOK like DeLongis's work, nor Alex Green's.

According to IMDB, Garrett Warren os Mickey's stunt double, and the Fight Coordinator is Jonathan Eusebio.

I'm sure SOMEONE will step forward with more information here soon. The worldwide network of whip performers isn't THAT big, and we have some of the best right here. I'm sure SOMEONE will step forward soon enough with more info.

We had a discussion about this when I was out in L.A. in November. The guys name escapes me at the moment, but he was a former trainee of Anthony De Longis and was supposed to “specialize” in two-handed whip work. So far I haven’t been all that impressed with what I’ve seen of him though LOL.

Adam Winrich was actually contacted at one point early on too, but for what ever reason the production team never followed through with him. It’s a shame really. That would have been some truly incredible whip work!

Happy Holidays.

Is the guy you're talking about the guy who did the two-handed stuff in Underwear.....Er....Underworld?

If that's him then...Yeah....I'm there with you in my opinions.

FYI - for those of you who know Alex, please spare a kind thought or two. He's battling the bic C at the moment. He's doing ok, but then again he's a tough guy too!

Don’t quote me but for some reason I think it’s a different person. If I can't remember the name, I’ll double check later.

Thanks Nick, I’ve been sending Alex good thoughts since I first heard about this and will continue to do so.

All the best!
