Hat Flange Choices

So, here's a question that I guess is for the resident hat experts. I found a flange I was thinking of purchasing online. My hat size is 6 7/8. So, the question is whether the flange they have listed as 70?-6 7/8-2 3/4 (which is interpreted: 70 style?, 6 7/8 size, and 2 3/4 Brim size) would be adequate for an Indiana Jones hat. I know the brim should be a dimensional cut, 2 3/4 inches by 2 5/8 inches on the sides, but have no idea what the possible 70 style would be. Are any of the other styles listed for 6 7/8 better choices? 207-6 7/8-2 1/2, 322-6 7/8-2 1/2. Are they all close enough, or are none of them close enough? Would it require a photo to be sure or really tell anything? Here's the link:

Right, the number 70 is the flange number, 6 7/8 is the size of the opening and 2 3/4 is the brim width to be used with this flange.

Hard to say what the profile of the flange is, just using the number 70. I reckon along with hat blocks, no consistency in numbers from flange maker to flange maker.

You would really have to at least see a pic of the flange to know if it would work for an Indy fedora. There are so many degrees of curl on various flanges. And therein is the key, picking the right one. To pick the right one, find your fav Indy fedora, look at the amount of curl in the brim, and then look for a flange that looks to have this same curl.

Also, if you wear a size 7 hat, buy a size 7 1/8 flange. That is, the next size up from the hat you want to flange. Hats are generally flanged after the hat is completed, so the bow is on it. The next size up from your hat size flange will fit the finished hat better. If you were to flange before you added the ribbon, the flange that was the same size as the hat could be used. In most cases.

I would watch ebay for one too. Many times you can get a good deal there. Fedora

I just got a flange on ebay for $7.99 There seem to be a lolt of smaller size flanges on there. I lucked out and no one wanted the one I wanted, 7 5/8.

Thanks for the reply Fedora and DR Ulloa I appreciate it. I didn't know if you could purchase a flange larger than the hat size or not, so that is good to know. Last I looked on eBay I didn't see any flanges that were the right size, but with that knowledge maybe there are a few more I might be able to consider. I just got a block off of eBay, but didn't see any flanges under $40 for the hat size I was looking for. One guy wanted over $100. Looks like I'll have to be more observant about estimating the brim curl. I can kind of estimate by turning the hat upside down and pretending the brim is a flange. Thanks.

So you use the block to make the crown and the flange to make the brim. Right?

That's how I figured out what a flange is.
