One thing about dealing with a custom hat maker like John is he discovered my head is a long oval. When I visited him he had me try on an Indy hat "about" my size. I mentioned the hat was snug to the front and back of my head but loose on both sides. He said the hat was a standard oval and that meant mine was a long oval. He made me a 22-5/8" long oval and it fits PERFECTLY around my entire head.

This is probably the reason I never wore hats in the past, I rarely came across one that fit me right. The hat I had been wearing this past year was one of those Dorfman Indy wool hats and it just kind of stretched into shape.

Did I mention I love my hat?

Looking at those pictures, I know I made an excellent choice in ordering a Penman hat. Great work John. I ordered a LC in early November and can't wait for the months to pass.

Another aspect that sometimes we don't realize is that John has to fight through chronic back pain each and every day in order to make these felt creations. Unknowingly, there is extra value added to your hat, as each one is produced, because a man loves his craft, and has dedicated himself to making sure each of us receive that elusive fedora that we only have pictured in our minds. This is what makes it special. Hats off to you, John. :TOH:

So the mailman just delivered to me 3 boxes... with hats in them!!! 3!!! 2 of them are Adventurebilts (one I got off of eBay and the other was a reblock from Steve) and the other is my new Penman!!!

John, that phone conversation I had with you was right, this hat is a BEAUTY!!! It's soooo soft!!! And I LOVE that ribbon! The creases managed to come out during shipping and the brim got a little distorted, but I will fix that!

Thanks again John!!! For the 3rd time you made me one happy guy! \:D/

Here's a teaser pic:

The black hat of nicks is 5 1/2 open crown and a 2 1/2 nom dim. brim. 1 1/2 inch black ribbon. Just remember I don't do standard specs. I change them according to the size or person.

By the way, j ... it bears mentioning:
Thanks so much for your speed in getting some shots taken of these beauties and your efforts to quickly get them posted for us to see - both here (in John's Thread) and over in Adventurebilt Territory.
I know I speak for a lot of members of the "Can't See Enough Photos of Another Beautiful Penman Hat" club when I say that your hard work is greatly appreciated.
That's a gorgeous hat collection you've got started there... and I'm glad you're so generous in sharing your photos with all of us.

Describe those two Indy hats: Is that gray supposed to be the Raiders seaplane? The ribbon looks smaller than ribbon on your brown Indy hat. And which brown Indy is that? They look like totally different brim and crown sizes, in addition to bash and crease styling . . .

Sorry about that! The grey one is my first Penman and is a Grey Raiders Seaplane. I have since tweaked the bash because I wanted to play with the bash... no other reason.

The brown one is a Last Crusade. The Last Crusade hat has a shorter crown and brim than the Raiders hat.

Oh, and the ribbon is the same size as the brown one... at least it looks like it to me.

That black hat is easily my favorite of the bunch. Very nice. Did you come up with the specs or John? I've come to realize that he knows more than I do when it comes to that. Congrats on the new hat. Now lets see it on your noggin! And, you've inspired me to take a family portrait of my three Penman hats as well. Lets see if I can find the time to do it this week.

John came up with the specs... in fact, you might see a hat just like this one on the Penman Hat Co. homepage... except a different colour!

Yeah, as I was taking pictures of the 3 hats I got today I decided to take a picture of all 3 of my Penmans while I was at it! I can't wait to see your Penman "family get-together" portrait!

Yes that hat does but have made a few for people just like it. It gas a vintage ribbon on it and after that amount is gone it's gone. I can still make the dark moss color but won't be able to put the same ribbon on it because I have a limited amount left.

I ask because my LC and My seaplane Raiders are opposite from yours: My seaplane gray seems shortcrowned and (thus) small-brimmed, making my LC seem taller (actually, it IS taller, there's no two ways about it). I love them both, but seeming so opposite from yours, I'm just a bit perplexed.

Care to chime in, John? I'd love to know. I didn't ask for anything specific with my Raiders Seaplane gray. I'm a small head, btw. I'm a size 7/ 56cm / 21and7/8inches. Does my smaller hat size mean a smaller hat than most?

I'll post pics soon to show the comparison.

Daren, If I'm not mistaken the LC hat you got from me was not made for you but something you grabbed because someone just happen to back out of their order at the last moment. If that is the case that hat wasn't made for you.

All three of these hats where made for Nick. The LC should have smaller specs that the grey seaplane hat.
