Budget homemade bag

Post by enigmata_wood »

Continuing my DIY-all-the-kit-on-a-shoestring project, I present my home made and patinated sachel.
It's made from white 'cotton casement' - a fabric used for upholstery - some offcut leatherette from a previous holster project, charity shop near-enough belt buckles, brass curtain rings and some washers and buttons sewn atop each other to look like the vents.
The whole thing is scaled up a tad to fit an A4 notebook.
The dirtied /stained / faded colour was achieved before cutting and sewing like this:
soak the white fabric in water, wringing it out, lay it flat.
Use a plant sprayer to spray alternate passes of thinned green and brown acrylics, It will spatter and drip, it wont go on even and it will bleed into the wet fabric unpredictably. PERFECT!
Scrunch it up and force dry it on a radiator.
Total cost £ 11
I also adapted the design to provide extra pockets inside and hidden on the back panel. If yawl want I'll post a diagram.

That looks great! I have thought about making a scaled up bag that will a letter size file folder, since I am in real estate and I carry alot of them. I have even thought about making one out of leather. I like the pocket on the back.

Would you mind posting the pattern?

Again, looks good...like its been dragged behind a truck!

I like your resourcefulness in finding supplies that you creatively use to complete your projects.

Again, GREAT WORK!

Many thanks. As I have mentioned somewhere before, the Norwegians have a saying that translates, "Necessity teaches naked women to sew". In reality 'resourcefulness' is the exact opposite; compensating for a lack of resources!
I imagine that this sort of inventiveness was common among Indy fans in the 80's, before the plethora of near-SA suppliers existed. I do find it satisfying to make these things myself too [he said smuggly]. It's a great way to accidentally learn new skills.

As promised here's my sketch. I make no apologies for my handwriting when in 'inventor' mode.
Thisdesign incorporates extra, slim, pockets hidden in the front and sides and behind the back for items to big to go inside. Hopefully if you study it carefully - and especially follow the colour coding - all will become clear.
ALL the side hems are left open until assembly and are indicated by dotted lines.
One final step not shown is to turn the bag right-side-out when all the seams are sewn, then sew the side seams again from the outside.
If it goes wrong don't blame my sketch, it's correct if you only follow ALL the instructions. probably. There was some on-the-fly problem solving as I assembled it that I can't remember or easily explain.
[Mods: the image is as small as I can go without loosing clarity]

I like it. I built one myself about 7 years ago... with a few mods recently. All told I think it cost me around $5 (not including the strap I got from Todd's). I like the vents and the sketch... very nice, very well planned out.

That's fantastic work! I'm not at all sewing inclined [at least I don't think so :-k ] or I'd jump at doing some diy stuff like this.

I'm no taylor either but sewing straight lines with the machine on it's longest stitch setting I CAN do.
BTW the intechange I like your avatar. Jeremy Brett, a talent that died too soon and THE Sherlock Holmes.

Thanks, I agree, Brett was and still is nothing short of amazing as Holmes.

I may take a stab at sewing some day. I just fear my work will come out looking like bargain basement items with crooked stitching and the like... but one has to learn.

In the case of this battered gas mask bag's look - that works in your favour!

That's true for the bag! I'd love to tackle a shirt someday, and that's what makes me nervous.

you could try this instead, it's just a few straight seams:

By The Way my wife is taking a class on a day trip to the Imperial War Museum - Duxford Aerodrome. They are wearing 40's style clothing so she borrowed this bag for the day. It'll be interesting to see what the experts think.

That will be interesting. Let us know what they say about your work! Oh I wasn't meaning an Indy shirt, just a shirt shirt.

no one commented on the WWII gas mask bag, they were all too busy noticing her authentic pencilled in stocking seams!
