My new SOC hat made with my selfmade block.

Post by Holt »

Hi.

I wanted to take upon a new quest. I wanted to see what it took to make a Hat block. a Raiders hat block of course. :D and man! I was so surprized how much work it really was :o ..wow, what can I say really other then that I so respect people who do this for a living. :notworthy:

I want to thank Steve for giving me a a couple pointers on how to start this Block project. I was/am completly new at this, so Thanx Steve

The hat itself was an Fed4 standard. not the one I made the SoC hat in that some of you might have seen, but another Fed. the one I made the LC hat with.

I stripped the hat and wet it down. slammed it on my block, which is not finished yet. I have lots to do on the block, but I couldnt wait to see what result I got from it :D

I really wanted to have that square crown and that big brim swoop that the SoC hat has. The Fed4 untouched is a good hat and it can pull it of, but it doesnt have THE look I wanted.

okay, enuff chat, here is the result. what do you think?

Another SoC hat by Holt
(Bear in mind that angle is slightly of.)

Looks good to me, you especially nailed the side view which I think was lacking in your other Fed 4 without the reblock.

Looks very nice to me. You definitely got the nice boxy look to it. The main thing I have with the Fed is that the crown doesn't seem tall enough for me to get a deep enough center dent (although this could be from my lack of bashing experience or abnormal head than the hat). You seem to have achieved the taller look here. Are my eyes fooling me or did you raise the crown somewhat? If so, how much brim width did you have to sacrifice?

That's another great looking fedora Holt! Once you figure out how to sharpen up that profile, some of us will be thinking you pulled a "Mission Impossible" on Screenused. :TOH:

Thanx guys, really appreciate it.

crismans,

yes the crown is slightly taller. its funny casue I really worked on my other fed to get the crown shortend... but on this one it came out really good. but I must say it isnt much taller, I dont think it is noticebale when comapering the feds. its just so much more boxy at the top, which is a must for a SOC fedora.

my hat size is a 58. but I wont go into production. never, this is too much work. and I would freak out if I had to do this for someone else.

Looks great Holt! You definately improved on the Federation block. I've had a hand at reblocks but never making my own block. I started doing so and never finished because I found a good vintage Raiders type block in my size. You even got the drop in the back, with the reverse taper.

Man! That looks GREAT!!!

I'm always so awed by how much wider a SOC brim is Vs. the Raven Bar brim. How can a little curve/upturn in the bar be that much wider in Cairo?

My Downtowner does a fine Raven Bar, but just can't seem to get the width to do an SOC (looks okay flat for an Idol Grab).

When can we see a pic of the block????

Looks great Holt, good job!

Making a block is a lot of trouble, but the result can be very satisfying. It's amazing how small changes to a block shape can make a huge difference in the creased hat - at least to the eye of a perfectionist.

Now let's see the block! What are the brim and creased crown dimensions?

Impressive, most impressive.

I thought that the Federation hats all had thick, stiff felt. In those pictures you made it look thin, JUST like the Raiders' hat. Well done!

Thanx. the fed deluxe is way stiffer and thicker then the fed standard felt. this one here is pretty thin and floppy.

I really looking forward to have this hat finished in the upcomming days. and I think this felt will look even better with the dust on it.

Wow, I am out of it for a while and I come back and everybody has gone SOC nuts! ESPECIALLY between you and Fedoraraiders. ;)

I'll have what they're having......

You know what you have there and you know how to show it off. The envy of many Fedora owners.
