So does that make the ribbon darker brown then to contrast?

Arch Stanton wrote:How in the bloody gums are you guys able to bash your Federation IVs like that? I just got my first one in the mail this afternoon. It's as firm as a cheap faux-leather sofa. I didn't have the dough to splurge on the Deluxe. Is that why I'm having problems? I mean, I can't even get the snap brim to stay down in front.

And what are these tips for steaming? Like over a pot of boiling water? I'm so scared I'm going to mess it up or shrink my hat or something. And when I make the top bash the little saddle crease at the back of the hat seems like it gets so tight that the felt might crack. I thought being a gearhead was supposed to be fun, but this is actually getting a little bit stressful. lol

Sorry for being a newb to this. I've been lurking on and off for as long as this place has been around. I just don't know where to look for this sort of discussion. The amount of info on this site to sift through is both daunting and overwhelming. :?
You ever heard of a thing called obsession?
Work on it, it's a great learner's hat, since it'll look great even after trying a bunch of @#$%.
Use steam to start off with, then cold water.. let it set in just a little bit then brush it away with a towel.

Mine is never going to be perfect. But the nice thing is Indy's hat is always different.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like the fed 4 might be a bit too light/bright/red (obviously not red but more of a lighter shade of brown)

The ribbon is darker than the felt and IMO looks better in sunlight - a nice contrast against the felt. Sometimes, in certain lights, it looks black.

Apparently Marc (Adventurebilt Deluxe) uses the original suppliers of the Raiders ribbon and the Fed seems to have the exact same coloured ribbon. I really like the Fed as a Raiders hat. The only alteration for SA is the bow - its not a Flying V. Apart from that I think it makes a pretty SA and affordable alternative to custom hats.

You should get someone to get us a straight on shot outdoors from about 10 feet away, then we can get a good handle on the hat.

Review the previous posts, but I think Oak sez a Fed IV's front should be about 4-3/4".

Again, get somebody else to snap a front shot of you from about 10 feet.

That's a nice looking ha, EvilDean. It has slight "camel humps" when looking at it from the front....and do I detect some slight reverse taper? Very Raiders to me. If you're going for the Raiders look you may try turning it then bashing it, before the bash gets set in too much. Just a suggestion. But great hat, and welcome to COW. :TOH:

haha, thx bro..., and thx again for the welcome :D:D.
no reverse taper though, must be the angle of the camera ;P i cant turn it actually, my head is to round-ish, so im havin a hard time to get the side brim the way i want it. BUT i did (accidently) snap the brim like it would have been turned... and i love it, doesnt really show in the pics though =/ new pics tomorrow when the sun rises again ;) then ill try my best.

i gotta admit, i had no probs at all getting that tight pinch, no steam or cold water, just first bash luck or something ^^ the brim was hard though... prolly thats why it didnt get sentered( i might have turned it a little bit by putting the foamfill-ins a little offside on purpose ;) )
so, how do i fit in it from the above picture? :?

im swedish btw, excuse my english hehe

EDIT: So im a smoker(sorry =/), will smokin affect my hat in anyway, except for stink ??

I can tell its a sharp pinch, but I like the way you've creased it. Its a generic Raiders bash, but it screams Indy. Seriously, I love it!

thx :)

only prob i have is that my head is kinda roundish, so the side brim goes downwards a tiny bit.... i hope it'll fix itself with time ;D

btw, ive been wearing it all day... i really dont feel that im wearing it, cause it fits to good, but when i take it of(even if i only wear it for 30seconds or so) my head feels empty and cold/bald :S... and no, its really not to tight... i almost should prolly fit some more "fitting" from the shop... but i wanna wear it like this for awhile, and when it thightens up, oh my god... ill never take it off cause of love... my gf is jealous of my love for a hat haha :)

next post here from me= more pics, in direct sunlight if the wheather wanna be that kind :)

Here's a Fed IV Deluxe that I got from Herr Doktor. It had a Raiders bash (with turn it appeared). I wanted to go for a generic LC type of bash. I couldn't get it to take dry so I steamed out the Raiders bash (which the Fed took like a champ and I did some heavy steaming) and put in a new bash. Not exactly an SA LC bash but a nice equivalent I hope.

Here's my new Fed IV Deluxe that I bought from someone who didn't like the way it looked on him. While I'm not an avid gearhead and I'm not overly concerned with perfect screen accuracy, I have always wanted a good Indy hat. Now I have one! \:D/

It was a half-size too small and had a C-crown bash with a loose front pinch but the price was right and the hat is in virtually new condition, so I figured it was worth buying and stretching. I used a little water to relax the grosgrain ribbon and sides while I wore it at work between incoming calls. It fit much better as it dried on my head. When I got home I used steam to soften the sides again and return the hat to an open crown. Then I put a makeshift do-rag on my head (to widen it just a bit) and jammed the hat down as far as I could until it dried. Afterwards, I put in a center-dent and tightened the front pinch, thusly:

Image

Over 24 hours later the felt still hasn't rebounded to it's former size and it still fits nicely. Even before I did all of that, I got the "Indy" comment from someone, so I am very pleased with this hat indeed. I took this pic yesterday in the late afternoon sun.

Image

It's 3:30 am as I post this and it's on my head right now! I have a standard Fed IV in Moonstone which was my favorite hat until the mid-brown Deluxe arrived. I'll probably wear this constantly for the next week, before bouncing back and forth between the two, depending upon my outfit. This lid is too cool!

I always appreciate it when someone gets outside to take a shot of their fedora with real sunlight beating off of it. I think it just suits this kind of hat a little better.

Got the first rains of the season here in the bay area and the Fed got some time in the rain, this helped the brim finally soften up a bit so I could snap the front down a bit more and I tightened the pinch a teeny tiny bit

EvilDean - nice hat - great job for being your first hat bash (I'm assuming?)! Looks very Indy Raiders, I think.

roninjedi - Yours looks great too! Especially in that outdoor shot - that hat just looks right on you! :TOH:

I have to admit, since I got my Garrison Raider and now Penman, I have neglected my Fed IV a bit, but it's still a great hat, and still the best bang for your buck! I'm going to wear it tomorrow, darn it! My Fed needs some love!

I'm getting on this thread kind of late, but what look are you after? Last Crusade? Raiders? Temple of Doom? You seem to have a Last Crusade front bash in it, so if that's the look you are after, I'd say your front crown height is ok , and it looks great! I'd say if you are at 4 1/2" that is good for almost anything, really. I think the higher front crown heights some attribute the Raiders hat is an optical illusion caused by camera perspective and angle. The Raiders hat was usually creased at 4 1/2" in the front, and as low as 3 1/2" in the back at times, if you take screen shots and measure it out using the ribbon width (which we know is 1.5") as a guide. Only in the "outside the temple" scene in the beginning did the hat have a front crease higher than 4 1/2" or 4 3/4". The color would be easier to tell if it were an outdoor picture, but it looks good to me.

Well, my Fed IV arrived yesterday and quickly did the YIJC bash, which just didn't look good at all to me. So, now I'm attempting to make the Raiders bash from the sunset dig above the Well of Souls. The swept back brim and curled sides of Indy's sollihouette makes the hat look more like a cowboy hat than the typical bash. I'll post pics when I get the bash right.

The one thing that stands out from this newest incarnation vs the Fed III is the stiffness of the felt. It seems to be holding the bash a lot better than the III did. :TOH:

Right on Clutters!

My only feedback would be to check the tightness of the front crease (an infamous challenge on the Fed) especially toward the ribbon. Don't let it open up too much or it goes more SOC than Raven bar (in my opinion). Likewise, you may want to push crease in the crown forward a little bit - but I can't tell exactly from the pics.

All told you did a great job with the turn and you've got great attitude with the hat on. You wear it well and it really suits you.

Best,

Thanks, Bartram. When shaping the hat initially, I wanted a Raiders look, but I wasnt going for any particular RotLA scene, but just the general look. I sort of let the hat take its own shape as I was coaxing it in to the general shape I wanted.

The LC look was a result of my not wanting to stress the felt too much right away with a tight pinch. Over time, though, I have tightened up both the top and bottom of the pinch, making it more into a Raiders-look hat, although, again, not consciously modeled after any particular scene. The crown was always higher than the LC hat, btw.

I love this hat and wear it literally everyday.
