A vintage Raiders fedora

Post by Fedora »

It was my rain hat years ago And I just sold this hat here, in the Cairo section, and just one of many from my collection. Heath, you are gonna love this taper proof vintage hat. This is the same hat that made me wonder why old felt is so stable. No matter how wet it got, it never tapered a twittle. Just washed off the dust.

Image

This is a great Raiders fedora, and I should have snapped a side pic to show off the hat, but did not do so.

Recently I went down to my rental storage building to pull out another 30 bodies to use for hats, and looked at my stacks of vintage hats that I never get to wear. Many are from the era that I would take a vintage hat and turn it into an Indy fedora. While some, are left "as is" like the Knoxes and the Cavanaghs. Even I could not bear to Indy-ize these fine old hats. Who would ever cut off a Cavanagh or Mode Edge? A now extinct brim treatment. But if the hat was a Stetson, or other old brands, even with bound brims, they were canidates for the Indy treatment. The above hat was one of those. I think it started life as a Stetson Whippet.

I used to keep 7 hats in rotation, changing to another one, each day. But, that was when I had the cabinet shop and worked in my hats. Today, I find that 3 or 4 is plenty to rotate, and never get to wear many of the vintage hats I Indy-ized. I currently wear an AB on rainy days, if the rain is heavy, and if light, I go with my vintage Stetson, tan Raiders fedora. On nice days, I wear either the AB, the Henry, or the vintage Stetson. Bout twice a year, I put back a couple of these hats, and pull out my Deluxe and another hat, a rabbit Raiders fedora, and give the other two a rest.

But, I have two new hats in my future. Marc is still to make me the world's rarest hat, a beaver with the max amount of mink that a hat body can take. And a rabbit Raiders fedora made as a test hat on the new rabbit felt I will be using.(yep, I test out any new hat I offer for sale) Now, will I wear that world's rarest hat, or just save it? I figure I will wear it, as often as I can! I am also gonna snatch me up this new Mag HJ, with the thicker felt, and am working towards rotating, the world's rarest hat,(the beaver/mink hat, creased Raiders style) an AB CS, a Mag Raiders HJ, and a new rabbit felt Raiders fedora, SOC look. For me, that will be my set up from here on out, once I get all of those hats in hand. And when Spring and Summer come around, I will swap one of these out for my future camel colored hat, like I made for Michaelson. It's a great summer color. I am contemplating, making the camel hat an adventure looking hat, without doing the Indy creases that I always tend to use on my hats. Maybe I will create a new and different adventure looking hat, using old adventure films as a reference. A combo of several looks, that still screams adventure, tombs, and grave robbers. Maybe influened by Secret of the Incas, and other films like that. I think the camel color would fit right in with a hat of this kind. ONE day, I will have the time to indulge in things of this nature. Right now, its just a dream.

Then, only for special occasions will I pull out a vintage Knox, or Cavanagh, and will treat them with kid's gloves. They belong in a museum!!!! Fedora

Sorry, but I'm finding it to be perfect for ANY time of the year =; ....so don't just make one to wear for warm weather. It's works regardless of season! :TOH:

HIGH regards! Michaelson

I love seeing your hat collection, Steve. That is a fine looking hat. It always cracks me up when guys say that the dimensions on the Indy fedora didn't exist back when hats were common place. How else would you be able to turn vintage hats into this? Its a beautiful hat, man. Oh, and take the time off to make yourself that camel hat. When you get to my grey CS order, just skip over it and make yourself one...seriously.

I gotta ask, "What is the deal with the beaver / Mink felt? Does that make it an even more durable hat?

Is it that the process is too demanding to recreate the Cavanagh, and Mode edges today? Or, simply a change in taste? That's one hat question I've always wanted an answer to.

If I remember correctly, its because the process to too costly. I have to say though, that the Cavanagh/Guid/Mode edge treatment is the ONLY edge treatment I like. And it is beautiful. I own a Dobbs with a Guild edge and it is fantastic. My friend has an old 40's-50's Borsalino with the same Cavanagh edge and it is simply beautiful.

I actually meant to add too costly, too.

P.S.. had to edit a typo in my original post which made a certain word go ### with two s's instead of d's.. haha

Ouch. I goofed. I sold a vintage HJ instead of the vintage Stetson! I had confused this hat with a vintage Stetson, until I read the slip of paper in the storage box. This hat started life a HJ Homburg. I took off the bound edge, cut the brim down on the sides and turned it into a Raiders fedora. I have another one that looks just like it, which is a vintage Stetson, and got these two hats crossed up. So, I just sold a hat I did not plan on selling!! Well, the buyer will be very pleased. I gotta watch what I put up for sale from here on out.

No, not at all. It is just a very rare blend. At one time Stetson sold a hat that was called a "touch of mink". It was a beaver hat, with mink fur added to give it an even more luxury finish. So, Marc wanted to get his feltmaker to make us a body, using the most mink that the body could handle. It took several tries to finally find out exactly how much mink you could put into a hat. Mink does not felt properly, used alone. It felts too fast, which creates a "push" in the felt, that you cannot pounce out. So, his guy kept trying until he finally found out just what the max mink fur would be, without pushing. Once he found out, Marc had us a body made, and one for this felt maker. I think Marc already made his feltmaker his mink hat. So, Marc did it, just to have the rarest felt in the world. Now, when Stetson sold that touch of mink hat, I bet it probably had no more than 1 or 2 per cent of mink in it. Ours has much much more, and the max amount that can be used. So. its the rarest felt made. And this is not offered for sale, as it was done as a favor. Too much of a headache for them to mess with making these bodies for resale. I have been salivating for a couple of years over this future hat. I think you have to be obsessed with felt to want one though. No advantage of this over a beaver hat. I want it becaue it is so rare.

The Cavanagh Edge is an art. I doubt there are but a hanfull of feltmakers that can do it today. It took years of training to master this back in the old days. With that said, Brad Bowers, had my feltmaker to make him one, since the old guy there still knew how. Brad did a research paper on this edge. It is not offered today, by anyone that I know of. A crying shame. Its the only edge treatment other than raw, that I love. Can't stand welted edges. Not after owning the real deal. Fedora

Have you ever considered asking your felter to make you some Cavanagh bodies, Steve? I'm sure if you made that one of your regular offerings there would be a lot of people (myself included) interested! -M

They are not interested. Too much artistry involved, and only the old guy there can do it, which he won't do. This was a very arty edge, took years of training to make em. The art has been lost, except for a few old timers, and very few to them. Fedora

Can you enlighten us with a description or photo of the Cavanaugh edge? I have a vintage hat with an unusual edge treatment. I'm not sure if it is what you are referring to.

the cavanaugh edge is like a welted edge only rather than being stitched in place the fold (welt) is felted to the brim.

 That really is a shame. I'd love to own a Cavanagh edge someday, but due to my large head size and the high demand for them, it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to find them on eBay - at least for a half-way decent price. -M

are you talking about the Adventurebilt Legend? I saw one of the 4 ABL in a photo Marc posted a while ago. He talked about a VERY high price to produce a rawbody made with that amount of mink. I'm still wondering how much could it be

I saw one of those hats that Marc made with the mink in it. It was one of the nicest hats I ever saw. One more thing, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw his work improve from the time I bought my ABD from him not to long ago. Thats the thing about Marc I like so much. He will never stop at trying to improve how he does things.

Oak,

Don't sell yourself short ;) . Believe it or not, there is quite a bit of difference between the Hero CS I ordered from you Sept 08 (#43) and the Raiders I ordered in April 09 (#129). You can especially notice it in the pouncing. Oak continues to master his art of hatmaking :TOH: . The Raiders hat just has a richer look and feel to it. I am currently having my Penman CS Grey reblocked on Oak's updated block. Looking forward to seeing the results. If all goes well, I plan on sending him my Hero CS and finally complete my quest.
