A question for all Penman hat owners.

Post by Hollowpond »

Hey guys, having just recently received my Penman LC, I had a little question. On John's business card/hat claim ticket it has a place for the name and address and such info, I've filled all that out on mine as well as on the card that resides in my Penman refurbed Man with No Name hat. Here's what I want to know; the last line of the card reads "Reward", how many of you have filled this out, and what do you think is a suitable reward for returning a beloved hat? :-k Or more generally, If you lost your favorite hat, how much would you be willing to pay for its safe return?(this is not a ransom situation   )

ps I guess this applies to all hat owners really, not just Penman hat owners.

 Thats exactly what I'm getting at. I mean, at the most, a reward is worth the replacement price, but if it is a well loved friend, shouldn't it be worth much more than that? I'm not planning on misplacing mine, but these cards have just set me to thinking. :-k

I was in the military for about 8 years and I traveled all over southeast asia. I went to mainland Japan, Thailand, Guam, I lived on the Island of Okinawa for a few years. I have also been to Australia. In all of my time traveling there was 1 constant I had with me, my swiss army knife. I imagine that knife is 15 years old. They are so many memories tied into that knife that it is priceless.

Now back on subject. I just recently received an Adventurebilt CS. I am starting the later years in my degree study in archaeology and I am getting my field experience logged so I can apply to graduate school. My point is I will be making frequent trips to the Near East and i intend to make my Adventurebilt my go to hat. I will take it on every excavation and trip I make. I am digging at Qumran coming up in May 2010. Qumran is the site where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. I hope it will be the first of many memories associated with this hat. So 10 years and many adventures later how much would my fedora be worth to get it back if I lost it? I am saying priceless! I would spend whatever I could afford. From what I hear archaeologists are not in the top tier of high paying jobs, so like I said whatever I can afford. Somethings are more important than money. I plan to pass this hat on to my son one day when I am gone. I want the old friend hat everybody talks about. I want my hat to be as priceless as my old swiss army knife.

Hmm.. I don't know if I'd put a $1,000 reward on at the most a $300 something hat [referring to Penman]. I'm sorry, unless that hat has VERY and I mean VERY strong sentimental value, I wouldn't give more than a $50 reward.. if that much, more like $20-25 would be my landing point.

I guess I don't think like other people, but if I lost my Penman, and never regained it, I'd order.. end of issue. ;)

I definately would go along with this under certain circumstances. If a hat was rarely worn or was a drive around town hat or something like that.

It is the "ONE" hat I refer to as being priceless. I am one of those types that once I get something that works and I break it in it is better then a new one. That is another reason aldens are so appealing. You can resole them.

That's what I mean, I'm not that emotionally attached to any of my hats.. I get that way with jeans though. Yes, Aldens would be that way for me, too.

Hmmm, that reminds me I haven't put a card in my hat. I'm with theinterchange though. I would be in the neighborhood of $25-50 and definitely not more than the replacement cost of the hat.

I have a Zippo lighter I've carried for over 12 years that carries great sentimental value to me and the group of guys that have one from the same set. I thought I lost mine at the gym and posted a sign with "I'll buy you a Zippo of your choice and treat you to lunch to share why this Zippo means so much to me." With as important as it was, it just didn't seem right to offer a huge reward. I figured it was my fault I lost it and at worst I'd buy a new one for myself. Sure, a new one wouldn't have the same sentimental value, but I would start creating new memories with the new Zippo.

As it turned out I found the Zippo in a pair of pants at home. After it had been through the washer. :o And it lit in the first try! \:D/ (It had a torch insert to replace the flint and wick.)

Now, having said all that, a Penman can be replaced. An AB once Steve retires? Hmmm.

Regards,

It's all situational. For a new Penman, probably around $50, because I know I can order a new one that will have the same quality. If it's a few years down the road and I've grown really attached to the hat, then I'd offer more. If it's an AB and Steve's retired? Then I'd probably put down a substantially larger amount because I wouldn't be able to replace it.

You know, I think I'll forgo stealing wallets. It looks like stealing hats for the reward money is more lucrative! :BD: \:D/

I think 25-50 dollars is all I would put on the card. Most people finding your hat would think thats a big reward and return it. One of Steve's or Marcs hats. I would put the amount of the current rate.

Not in the least. I didn't make hats for Indy 4, I don't have Steve or Marc's waiting list.
