Question about my Crystal Skull Adventurebilt

Post by Jonny Whip Crack »

Hi everyone. I'm finally able to post pics of my CS fedora so I thought I'd ask a questions with regards to the styling that I've been meaning to for a while.
Here's the link to the pictures (some with flash, and no flash):

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=1 ... cd11e26bcc

Looking at the hat straight on, I notice that the left side of the brim is lower than the right. I'm use to a symmetrical brim, being the same height on either side. What this seems to do is create a front swoop that almost comes to a point, rather than the wide front swoop, as portayed in the film. (I hope this makes sense). Also, where it starts to take a dip on the right side into the swoop, seems to dip before where the right side takes its dip. (again, hope this makes sense). My hat arrived to me a bit damaged from its travels to me here in Canada. I had to fix the back of the brim that had been pushed in quite a ways, and I'm hoping it wasn't me that created this uneven brim in trying to fix. My question is 2; one, is this the way the hat is suppost to be? It's not a matter of like or dislike, just a matter of specs and screen accuracy. And two, how does it look overall? Does the side and back brim look even from having fixed it.

Great fitting hat, and I love the bash. Very Crystal Skull. My question is really only about the brim.

Feel free to shed some light, and Steve, if you see this, I'd love to hear from you on this.

Cheers, and thanks everyone.

Sounds like a slight "turn" like on the Raiders hats. Didn't know they did those on the CS's, but I'm sure someone does. But most Raiders you see, esp. SOC's, have that swoop on the right, where it dips down some over the right eye, but that's because of the turn in conjunction with a dimensional cut.

I don't think there is a turn going on, but seeing it on your head might help in judging that.

What I THINK I see is a combination of having been bumped around in shipping (and then reshaped by hand), and one of the tell-tale characteristics of hand-craftsmanship. Have you only had factory made hats so far? Because if so, you might be hypersensitive to the "imperfections" of a hat that isn't made by machine.

Basically, felt is an organic substance with it's own behaviors and flaws. So are human hands. They are bound to be slight variations. You can probably even it out by hand with some steam or when the brim is wet... but if you handle a hat by the brim (which you are supposed to) it will eventually get uneven, anyway.

Most of my hats will "vary" a bit just by handling alone. In fact, my first AB has become so pliable over time that I can achieve "brim turn" effects just by playing with the brim while it's on my head, and I do not turn my hats. Same thing with the "pointiness" of the brim shape. Try sweeping your hand across it while wearing it and see if that does anything. But looking at the pictures, I don't see anything wrong with your hat through my eyes.

I can't see what you are talking about, from the pics. But sounds like the hat got moved around in transit, which normally isn't a problem(but I am used to crushing my own hats so.....) But if one side dips more than the other, I think some steam and your hands should correct any differences. I looked over your pics and I just can't see exactly what you are talking about. May be just me though. Fedora

I just got my CS Adventurebilt. I figured I would post a frontal pic for you to compare yours with.

Thanks everyone. Beaverlid, thanks for the photo. I'm pretty sure that the one side just needs a lift to make each side even in height, then the front of the brim will swoop properly. From what I can see Beaverlid, your CS hat is even in height on both sides, and watching the movie today, it appears that way too. When you look at my photos head on, it's pretty obvious that the left side is lower than the right.
I'll take Steves advice and give it a little steam and lift the one side up. Hopefully that should do the trick. Being an Adventurebilt, I'm always nervous to alter Steves work, but if it's a relaxing issue, or moved in shipping issue, I'm sure it'll fix fine.
Thanks again to everyone that posted a response.

Cheers
Jon
