Garrison Raider - Re-bashed as Raven Bar hat

Post by jasonalun »

Well guys, I'd said I was going to post some new pics of my Garrison Raider in another thread (or two!), and so I figured I'd better get down to it. :TOH:

These aren't terrific, as I have difficulty taking pictures of myself (can't focus easily - need a stand-in - and it's hard to get the lighting and pose right when you can't see what you are doing! ](*,) ), but I think they show off the Raven Bar look pretty well, with the turn I put into it. It didn't have really any noticeable turn in it before, and I wasn't happy with it as I love the Raven Bar hat the most, which has a very pronounced turn in it. Since the front pinch was so set in after five months of wearing and reinforcement, I was afraid to turn and re-bash it as I thought I might ruin it, or the old front pinch would show and look terrible. Dave Garrison (Local Land Surveyor) encouraged me to, saying the hat could take it and that the old bash would gradually fade away. He said he had done it with some of his, with no problems. So I took the plunge, and am very happy I did. I LOVE this hat now - it looks just like I wanted it to. The lighting in these pics doesn't do it full justice, but they are as good as I can do for now, and they look pretty good. And you can't see any trace of the old bash! At least I can't.

EDIT: replaced previous blurred image with focused one:
Image

This one is supposed to be like Indy at the bar saying he's sorry to Marion. No Marion, though. No time for Photoshopping. :[
Image

And this one is supposed to be like Indy after he gets punched by Marion. I should have put a fist to my chin instead of an open hand, but oh well.

Thanks, RaidersBash! The Garrison Raider is the best Raiders hat out there, in my opinion. There are a lot of great Indy Raiders hats available now, and you can't really go wrong with any of them (except the Dorfman Pacific! ), but this one is el perfecto, as far as I'm concerned. There is isn't an angle it looks less than SA from. And you can bash it to any scene of the movie and it does it easily, with no fuss, which to me means it's pretty much a perfect Raiders block, especially the way it can crease down to 3 1/2" in the back (as the hat is in the Raven Bar and other scenes) without causing taper in the sides. Again, my pictures don't really do it full justice - it looks so much better in person.

For $265 and one month turnaround, I'm surprised Dave isn't backed up a few months in orders already like John Penman is. I'm sure it won't be long before he is.

Here's a couple more I was able to take, closer up and from some different angles. I like the one that shows the rear of the hat, it really captures that look that the hat has when Indy is shooting at Toht's thugs in the Raven Bar.

tundrarider - how does it feel to say I told you so? I stand corrected. Thanks for the compliments and encouragement! I probably wouldn't have tried something like this if you hadn't encouraged me. :TOH:

Mitch, it seems a thread here just isn't quite complete until you weigh in!  Thanks so much to you as well for your too-kind words. I was really floored by your photoshopped pics in your thread - you're my idol now. :notworthy: You've set the bar high - now I've got something to shoot for! :whip:

I hope these really show off LLS's wonderful hat. I just wish I could do a better job of showing how great this hat looks. I think I'm going to try to borrow a relative's photographic lighting equipment, and set up a temporary studio (a sheet with some light reflectors on each side! ;) ) in my basement so I can really make the hat look it's best. My house is a picture-taking lighting nightmare... :Forrestal: And I hate to use a flash, since that just blasts away all the shadows and lightens colors. Better to use natural lighting and get all the nicely placed shadows showing all the nuances of the color and creases of the hat. The trick is, getting just enough light and where you want it. :-k

Cool.

Looks like Tundrarider and I did a little "double-teaming" work on ya as far as inspiration goes! (You'll get no apology from us for that!) ;) Glad to help!

Frankly, I'd really love to see something like that... and like you said, Jason: Garrison's Fine Hats sure DO deserve that kind of attention (and promotion!)
I look forward to seeing this happen!

You sure did, Mitch! ;) I love seeing all the stuff you come up with. Now my creative juices are flowing again, and that's good for me all around. I used to do a lot of photography years ago (though you wouldn't know it by the quality of some of these pics  ), but I got busy with career and kids (or at least "kid" in my case) and kind of let that interest collect dust. This has helped jump-start my desire to do work again, whether Indy pics or other, so thanks to all you guys for helping a fellow fan recover an old interest. :TOH: :

Do you have a Garrison Raider, Mitch? I seem to recall you ordering one at some point, and maybe doing a review as well. To lazy to look it up right now. How is yours doing? What style did you bash yours in?

I do.
First guy in Canada with one, too - says David Garrison.
Took it on vacation with me and - after getting back - posted MANY a photo of it - and eventually a Review as well - in an effort to show it off from many angles, in many different kind of natural & artificial light & shadow and even with a few different kinds of clothing...
I caused a bit of a "dust-up" too (because in my enthusiasm to show off such a great hat I went a little bit... *ahem*... overboard on the number of Links and such that I was putting in a single Thread).
It was on America's Most Wanted... you didn't see it?
:P
Seriously, though...
LOVE my Garrison.
It's a trusty, sturdy EVERYDAY kinda' hat and just like you said: once everyone catches up to this idea, Mr. Garrison's gonna be a busy fella.
Bash-wise (is that even a word?) I started out trying a sort of SoC look, eventually began "Raven Bar"ing it and am now proudly sporting it with an overall - but non-specific - Raiders Bash. And she's a beaut. Get's a little better every day.
:TOH:
(The Garrison Raider is definitely a hat that's well-worth the effort to do the kind of photo-shoot you're talking about... THAT's for sure!)
Cheers,
Mitch

Mitch, you bring this up one more time, I swear, we're going to push that big shiny red button in the boiler room and make every photo you've photoshopped to date go out of focus and change to pastel colors. :-s

You've been warned. [-(

Just tryin' to laugh about something I know I was guilty of, Michaelson... I just found it supremely ironic that Jason wasn't sure if he'd seen photos of a hat I swamped a Thread in!

No more "funny" from me on this subject I promise.

That hat looks great in all your shots! I just ordered a henry from John and I am having it bashed after the raven bar scene. I certainly hope that mine looks as good as yours. ;)

Hey Jason,
I just got back from a project in Augusta, Georgia today and saw this post. Fantastic angles. My wife says your pics looked professionally done, by the way. Wonderful group of pictures. I am glad you went ahead and rebashed the hat to the Raven Bar style. It did hurt a bit, did it?
jasonalun wrote:Thanks, RaidersBash! The Garrison Raider is the best Raiders hat out there, in my opinion. I couldn't have said it better myself. ;) :D . In these statements alone, you covered what I was aiming for in my hat. A 360 degree hat that screams RAIDERS!!! Your last three pics sum up the Raven Bar hat beautifully. The first of the three even has Cairo in it. I am pleased that you enjoy the hat so much and wear it often. It has held up well since you got it. Much like when Mitch posted his pics, you had keyed in on certain angles that I concentrated on when recreating the block. Kind of a subconscious thing. And really, when you see it in person, that is when the light bulb goes off.
As for being covered up with orders, that is the nature of this I guess. I contribute it to three things. One. I am still a fairly "new guy" to COW and I am sure many folks could be on the fence about me and my version of the Raiders Hat. That's OK with me. So far, all my customers have been extremely satisfied with The Raider. Two. The Raider is rabbit felt. Beaver has the title of being the best quality and most long-lasting of the felts. I have a different opinion. I think that rabbit is just as high quality and will be as long-lasting as beaver. Rabbit is just different. The Raiders hat needs that rabbit felt quality to pull the look off it has. As you stated in another thread, beaver felt misses in that area. The third , and most important, the economy is completely yucky. Food on the table, paying the light bill and making sure the family is safe is way more important than a new hat. Especially if you already have a slew of brown hats and you "want another one!!!". I have been there and I know. ;)
If you would like one of my hats, I will be proud to make you one.
Jason, thanks for posting, what I consider, an update on your Garrison Hatters "The Raider". Just imagine what a dusty, beat up, distressed "Cairo Style" would look on ya. I could see it now. Wow. :[  Sorry. I wasn't trying to drum up business......... I was just sayin'.......... :D

Man, don't do it, don't tempt me like that! :whip:  You don't know how many times I've been sayin' to myself lately, "man I need to get another one of these, maybe bash it this way, or that style...hmm." Arggg! My wife will probably kill me if I try to get another one right now. We'll see, though! I might have some extra cash soon if some things fall into place. [-o< And by the way, tell your wife I said thanks for the compliment on my photography. I'm very flattered, but I know I can do a lot better than this. I once did some professional photography many, many years ago but don't have the proper equipment and lighting anymore, and now have a digital camera and they work a bit differently than the old film ones. Once I get some experience (like this!) under my belt and some proper lighting, I'll be in business. :TOH:
Local Land Surveyor wrote:I have a different opinion. I think that rabbit is just as high quality and will be as long-lasting as beaver.
Yay! Someone who agrees with me! \:D/  It has to be well-made rabbit, of course, but there's no concern about that with your hats. If you don't take it to the Sahara for the summer or wear it in monsoon season every year or have yourself dragged behind trucks or jump in pools (some may know who I'm referring to - good-naturedly of course :TOH: ) with it, it should last a lifetime. May need a reblock at some point perhaps, but that's part of the normal care of a hat over its lifetime, I think.

Thanks for checking in, David! I'm really pleased you liked this. I did it mainly for you, after all. I hope to have even better ones in the near future.
Mitch LaRue wrote:It was on America's Most Wanted... you didn't see it?
Actually, I did, now that you mention it. I was off the board for a couple months due to life getting a bit crazy (job-related stuff, long story - nothing bad), so I missed that post when you made it. I did catch it (along with a ton of other stuff) when I came back after doing some digging to see what I had missed. I think I saw it after the "dustup" had been cleaned up. I remember now really enjoying that post and being happy you gave Dave's hats such a nice write-up. I have a really bad long-term memory for a lot of things, so my recollection of it was really fuzzy, until you reminded me. Really sorry - I hate having this problem.

Thanks, Bdgsi11! You're going to love your Henry. I had one (was too big for me so I had to sell it) and I loved the felt and how soft and pliable it was, and it was VERY comfortable. It is very easy to bash. You should be able to get a bang-up Raven Bar look with it no problem!

I just edited my first post to replace the out-of-focus image, and removed one link in my second post (to keep under the six link limit) and put in a link to an album, so I could include a few more pics. Enjoy!

I just looked at your pics again. That hat looks absolutely PERFECT on you. :notworthy: I really like the one from the side close-up.

Plus, that's a nice jacket. Without derailing; can you tell me about it? :-k

Michael :TOH:
Again, thanks for your kind words, TR! It's funny, I liked that side one the least myself, because you can't see the front bash at all, due my crummy lighting. But I'm glad you enjoyed it. When I get my little studio set up, I'll make sure I take that angle again for you, with some nice shadows on all the creases!

My jacket is a Wested Raiders Off-The-Rack in washed goat. Thanks! I really love it! Tough, warm, and looks just "weathered" enough for me. I've only had it since March. And I lucked out in that the OTR size 44 just happened to fit me perfectly. It's funny though, now I'm itching to have Peter make me a custom one in lambskin, just so I can say I have one made by the guy who made the original. :[ I LOVE this jacket, and it is a Wested, but it wasn't made by Peter, you know? These OTRs are made in India, I heard. I can't justify buying another one now, however. Maybe I can get a custom, and then if I like it enough, sell my current one. My wife will accuse me of losing it if I tell her I need another brown leather jacket! (I already have an A2 in addition to this one)
