Squatter = Fed III?

i was looking at feds on hatdirect and i thought the "Squatter" looks a lot like the Federation III, especially the picture of the carbon grey option. is this just wishful thinking, or has my favorite hat been reincarnated?

I'm afraid it's wishful thinking. The Squatter has been around a long time. It might even pre-date the Federation. The crown is lower and the brim wider, plus the binding.

It is possible that the Campdraft could be modified with a brim trim and a new ribbon to look like the Fed III. I believe it is the same block, and when I owned a Campdraft, the crown was the same height as my Fed.

Actually, the Campdraft featherweight is what we started out experimenting with when the Akubra line was 'discovered' for use as a possible Indy hat, so I agree with Chewy. The Campdraft would be your best candidate.

One of the main differences between the III and IV is the crown height right? It seems that I've read several comments that people are glad the crown height was lowered but I wish I had been here in the III days. I like Fed IVs but the crown height seems a little low for me. I may have to check out the Campdraft.

The IV has a slightly different block, too. But the CD will have plenty of crown for just about anyone!

Funny thing is that even with shipping, it's cheaper to get it from Hats Direct overseas than in the States!

Not really. It SHOULD be cheaper at the 'source', since Akuba's are made in Australia.

i was actually hoping for "in hand" shots. You know how it can be with stock photos.
