Last Crusade Hat... made out of straw!

Post by jnicktem »

Hello all! I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a panama-style hat that is similiar to the Last Crusade hat (basically shape and bash)? It does not need to be exact, but I am looking for one that has that kind of look.

I can't afford anything more than $200 with this hat, so please keep that in mind.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

I don't think there's anything out there in factory production, but you might be able to get something custom made. There are many grades of panama straw, so the lower grades would still be within your price range.

Your best bet, though, would be a milan "Indy" straw from Peter Brothers. If you explain what you want, they can probably do it. Their straw Indy is based more on the Raiders look, but since they make hats to order, they can probably do the LC pretty well. Also, Peter Brothers has several straw colors to work with. I recommend natural for a light color, rather than white.

Thanks again Chewie!

I found one off the Peters Bros site that looks close to what I want... it's the Peter Bros Teardrop on this page:

Does anyone know how well the dress straw holds up? Is it very stiff or does it have some give?

PB has had an "Indy straw" for quite awhile. It's at the bottom of this page: http://www.pbhats.com/INDY_CUSTOM/Default.htm

I'm sure they'd style it for you however you wanted.

Strider beat me to the punch. I'm surprised no one else caught that. There are a couple of threads about them in the fedora section.

Chewy DID point that out, several posts above yours. ;)

I am not sure about the cost but he is worth looking into because he has a history with making custom hats and working with Panamas.

MASTER HAT MAKER MARK MEJIA:
BARON HAT'S
“NEW” GENERATION

"Mark continued to study the art of hat making, along with reading everything he could on the subject. After school, a fortuitous meeting with an old friend sent Mark to the enchanting town of Montecristi, Ecuador, to look into the amazing art of Panama hats, which were only made in the region from indigenous palms. Mark was spellbound by the weave of these hats, a weave that felt like silk and linen, yet were woven by hand from the local palm leaves. These were hats that also lasted for generations without losing shape or color! He spent almost a year learning the craft himself working with the local craftsmen, and in the process created his own Panama Hat Company, “DeMarco Montecristi"

Anyway that little blurb comes off of their website. Mark is a friendly guy. You can talk to him on the phone or via email. Good customer service. Again I don't know about the price I just thought it might help.

Jnickten,

I bought a PB Milan CS over the summer. I have been very happy with it. Take a look in the fedora section. I started a post about the hat, the order process and pics. You should be well within your budget even with a rush delivery of 2-3 weeks vs 3-4 months. I would definitely go with a darker straw/black ribbon. Ill post pics on this thread when I get a chance.

I'm kicking around purchasing a PB straw and was wondering if anyone has a photo or could take one of the interior of the hat?

Randy,

The inside of the hat is same as the outside you see. There is no liner. The sweatband is identical to your Keppler. PB also put their emblem in the crown. I think its called a tip or something to that effect. This hat has been great is past summer. As you know, Central Florida can be brutal. Not always able to wear a beaver fedora :( . Hope this helps in your decision. I have been very pleased.

Ah, I knew it wouldn't be lined, but thought there may be some sort of label in the crown, like you said. I bet that beaver does get a bit hot. Though, I don't wear my fedoras when I'm out in the heat for extended periods, except for some outlet shopping and such.

I used to wear a straw cowboy hat back in the day, and have recently been wanting a straw hat of some sort again.. those custom PB's are enticing. Thanks Matt!
