Ordered a Tony Nowak New Nowak Goat # 42/888

Post by Clutters »

After speaking with Tony (I confirm that Tony is a great guy to talk to) and emailing him photos of a comparable jacket with its measurements, I have ordered an Indy I jacket. "It all happened so quickly". Now I feel like I have forgotten something, but I'm not sure what. Here are my requests, which seems like a really short shopping list compared to a Wested.

Zip all the way to the bottom of the jacket, or as close as possible
Brown lining
No inside leather facing
One inside pocket only
No elastic holding the action pleats shut

What do you think, did I miss something?
Cheers

No need to tell him this, all the things you mention are standard in the Indy I

Don't worry about that and I'm sure you'll like your jacket. Mine will be nearly 1 year old and I love it even more as time pass.

Yeah, thanks people. I think I just have post jacket stress disorder - the last time I got an Indy jacket it was so wrong I just put it in a cupboard and forgot about it for 6 months.

Clutters, I know how you feel. I am paranoid that I won't get my measurements right on my jacket! I've changed them 3 times already because I keep finding new measurements that will fit better! Tony is fine with it though, no problems. I'm sure that he will make you a perfect Indy jacket.

Exactly, there are no 'lists' needed, unless you want things like inside facings, elastic pleat closers, extra inside pockets.

As long as you covered your measurements you are good. Tony will ask for any you missed.

which leather did you choose?

Now I feel normal again, thanks.

Leather - Nowak New Goat! There are some photos of the Raiders jacket in the Complete Making of Indiana Jones book by Rinzler that I had not seen before which show the leather looking exactly like this goatskin in my view.

The facing doesn't affect the look of the jacket as much a people think, you still get the wavy zipper, and it only adds to the life of the jacket. Tony will give you his opinion.

Also, Tony's 2nd inside "map", or horizontal, pocket is a great feature and doesn't change the look either.

I've always wondered how it adds to the life of the jacket. Is it because it prevents you catching the lining in the zipper or is it something to do with the stitching itself?

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've had a G&B and Wested HH jacket without facings. The G&B I beat up, probably even had the zipper catch the lining, but all in all, it was fine. Maybe the lining gets a little baggy over time, and and the facing helps control it, but it seems like a minor repair. I have facings on my TN CS, and I think it effects the way it hangs and looks, that wouldn't be suitable on the Raider's jacket, especially the second pocket. In the end, after it's been broken in, it probably doesn't matter, but since I didn't have my G&B jacket break down after 8 years, I decided to risk it. Tony interpreted that as meaning I want "the real deal" :) But then I had him add the elastic, and modified pleat depth too.

Like I said, ask Tony's opinion on the facings. They do improve the look of the jacket when worn open and Tony makes sure to closely match the leather facing with the outside leather.

As for the second inside map pocket, I love mine and it doesn't affect the look or fit as Tony makes them quite discreet. Others who have the pockets would most likely confirm.

I have the second inside pocket on my CS jacket and like it. It isn't noticeable that one is there, even with something in it.

Clutters, it's completely up to you but ask Tony his opinion on features you may or may not want. We're just customers on a message board and will all have our own suggestions, but he's the guy with the expertise!

I've read through the posts and I calculate that it takes Tony about 15 – 20 days on average after first placing your order to call you for final specs and commence making the jacket. The longest 15-20 days of your life...

...aand its being made right now! Spoke to Tony again and discussed some changes and sizing issues - he really is the perfect vendor. The jacket should touch down in Australia within the week. Can't wait.

and here it is. Jacket 42/888 in Nowak New Goat. Made two more requests: rounded storm flap and zip ending a bit beneath the storm flap as per the "Marion" line shot towards the end of the Flying Wing scene.

needless to say, I am extremely happy with it.

Nice fit Clutters, mind listing your height and weight and measurements on the jacket just as reference for fitting........now just wear it a lot and let it mold to your body, beautiful jacket........

Thanks fellas. This goat is rugged! I have been wearing it as much as possible but it is taking a while to get any creases in it, which I hope is a great sign of durability to come.

Here's my specs:

6' 3/4" tall (that's six foot and three quarters of an inch tall), 41" chest

A-B 23.5" Front length incl Collar stand
C-D 23" Chest Flat
E-F 21.5" Waist Flat
G-H 7" Shoulders
I-J 24" Back length Top to Bottom
K-L 21.5” Back horizontal
M-N 26.25" Sleeves

I was a bit hesitant with the A-B measurement, being half an inch longer than Harrison Ford's specs given our height similarity, but I trusted Tony and of course, it was spot on. I guess I have a longer torso than I thought, but only by half an inch (or the HF height rumors are false). The K-L measurements I left blank. As Tony said, the shoulders and chest pretty much determine this aspect.

yep - no variation on the pocket specs, 8" by 6.75".
I agree about the collar. Tony asked if I wanted any distressing and I said no, as I planned to beat the fruit out of it myself. He seemed pleased with this course of action.

Thanks Tundra - your jacket is another of Tony's inspirational works!
If the Aussie dollar keeps climbing, I can see myself in the market for TN LC like yours next year...
