New Nowak Goatskin (Raiders Jacket)

Post by orb »

Hello guys.

I present you here my latest Nowak Addition.
Raiders Jacket in the New Nowak Goatskin. Here a few photos. I'm wearing lowboot cut jeans. So this makes the jacket look shorter as it is.
It's IMO the perfect Raiders length. The leather reminds me a bit of that Wested Horsehide but it got much more grain and character.
The weight is about the same as the horsehide. It's tough but quite soft.
Here a picture after pulling the jacket out of the shipping box:
Image

And here with a better shaped collar one day later in the woods:

I also took leather facings and a second inner pocket this time:

Oh and the price is 750USD.

Thank you Tundrarider.
It's my 7th Nowak so far. I'm not interested in the rest of the gear anymore. My head isn't made for hats I think. I also don't have time for other gear equipment beside the jackets. I bought a Adventure Built Shirt in Small and I don't like it at all. Doesn't even come close to the color in the movie. I had a Wested Shirt too. Looks even more awful. So I only buy stuff from Tony and be happy :-)

Got some pretty deep pockets there, Orb! 7th Nowak?! .....I don't think even Han Jones has that many.

BTW, fantastic jacket!!!.....which goatskin is that? the "Holy Goat" or just the standard?

Does it feel heavier or lighter than the 747 cow?

This is going to be my next X-mas present to myself!

Congratulations on this fine jacket !

Just as I was about to order my FIRST in 747 Cowhide, I see this! It is a great looking jacket and super-functional too.

Question:Orb - what do you think would be better suited to a warmer climate - 747 or the New Nowak Goatskin?
cheers

Gorgeous! Which goatskin is this? his vintage, or something else??

I just listed an Indy jacket on eBay. My wife says I can sell one to buy one...so I'm finally pulling the trigger on a new Nowak!

Looks great orb, really nice, and that goat has a very nice look to it. Same measurements as the last Raiders jacket, or slightly different? The tips of the collar look more round then the usual TN Raiders collar? Maybe its just the pictures? :-k

It is called as orb said, "Nowak goat" The vintage is different, and the Supreme is different

This Nowak Goat is very dark, and lamb soft to the feel. It is designed to distress to nice brown undertones.

I know, I'm just wondering if the Nowak goat is the same as what he was calling the vintage goat when I was at his shop (since the vintage goat I was looking at was different from the Raiders S vintage goat). Never heard of the Supreme!!!!! I know the Holy Goat and the vintage goat were related. The "vintage goat" was also more expensive, and not "lamb soft" so I guess it is different. Now I don't know what to get!

Great looking jacket, Orb! Like I've told you before, that Nowak goat makes a terrific Raiders. I can see this being a good choice for a ToD as well.

Raiders goat is 'vintage' only in that it was old stock hide. That is no longer avaialble and there was only enough for two jackets. There is no connection between it and holy goat . So you can forget that.

The vintage goat he would have shown you is something different from what Raider s has, and is available in 'shiney' and 'not shiney' It has a different feel and an almost 'sheet tin' flexible quality to it.
it is not the same as 'Holy Goat' either.
The Nowak Goat is a different hide, and as I described.

confused yet? ;)

First of all, Orb, BRILLIANT jacket! That goatskin looks absolutely killer! I've actually always wanted to get a goatskin jacket, but never came around to getting one... Yours really is starting to make me think! ;)
RCSignals wrote:How many does Castor have now? He may have really fallen behind
Heh heh heh... I don't know buddy, don't think I can really keep up with these guys! I've only bought eight Nowaks so far... and only six of those are for me! But I do have one more Nowak on the way, which actually is an EXTRA special one! Something I don't think anyone here has thought of yet, but a completely logical choice... That's all I'm saying about it... ;) :P

...and even though I won't get that jacket till Mid-October, I'm already planning on getting yet ANOTHER one (a LC) that I'm hoping I'll be able to beg Tony to make it in time to send with the other! :D

AWESOME looking jacket Orb. Goat is such a great leather, I really like the grain and texture of the back panel on yours. You need to post pics in about 6 months once it's really taken on some character.

Thanks for all the replies. The pleats aren't that deep. It's an optical illusion on the picture. The shadow makes it look deep. It's the same as on my other TN jackets.
Castor I also always wanted a jacket in goatskin. I thought I never get one.
Crismans I wouldn't recommend it for a ToD jacket. IMO would it make a great LC jacket when you remember how the jacket looked in the castle Brunwald scenes.
Clutters I don't own a 747 leather yet. But the new Nowak Goat is the thickest Indy jacket I got when I not include the Mutt Jacket. I got CS leather, Italian Cowhide, Shrunken Lamb, Happy Cow so far.
I will get another LC in the next few days/weeks from Tony. I haven't settled the leather yet. But I really always try to get a leather I don't own yet.

Hehe. It's not like just to pick a leather. It must match the look of the jackets used in the LC.
Tony recommends the CS Leather. But somehow I don't like it that much. I think my Italian Cowhide is a dead on leather for CS. Even without distressing it would look great. But I don't want the same leather twice. ](*,)

Hey Orb, more questions about this excellent jacket! :notworthy:
What is your true chest size and height and what are the C-D(Chest), G-H (shoulders) and M-N (Sleeve) measurements on this beauty?

Hello Clutters.
My true chest size is 38" at the moment. I'm 5ft. 10 tall.
C-D 22.5"
G-H 6.75"
M-N 25"

I know it sounds kinda weird over 6 inches of movement. But that is the cut of the Nowaks. Even Tony himself always recommended me to get atleast 22" at the chest. Every jacket I got feels quite snug at the chest.
On my latest jackets I went for a smaller back across size: K-L = 18,5"

Hope that helps.

Seems odd a 22.5" jacket chest measurement feels snug to you orb if your actual chest is 38". It doesn't look snug on you wearing it.

I meant that if you could have only one jacket, regardless of style, which leather would you choose? Or at the very least, which leather for a Raiders and which for an LC/CS?

Went by Tony's yesterday. He showed me three different goatskins. They all seemed like they were washed to me. Regardless, all would make a fine jacket. I saw what I assume is what you guys call the vintage goat because there was a shiny and non-shiny version of it. I also saw another goatskin which was dull, flexible, and was more even in its finish. I don’t know what the designation on it is though.

The vintage goat is very stiff and very thin. It might be the thinnest goatskin that I’ve seen. I will say that it’s nice to be able to go in there and not have to decipher which leather to get. I can just see for myself.

Tony as always was super. I didn’t pull the trigger on a jacket btw, I just wanted to see what the options were for one in the future, not that I’m a “tire kicker”. I’m thinking maybe in December.

Sounds like you saw the two versions of the vintage goat and the new 'Nowak Goat'
Interesting you think they look 'washed' They aren't other than the way all tanned hides are washed.

The vintage is as I said, kind of like a sheet of pure tin, stiff but flexible. Interesting stuff. Holds sleeve wrinkles fantastically.

Any idea which you will choose?

I had Tony do a little customization for me on my shrunken lambskin that I’ve had going on a year. I picked it up today and on a lark took these pics with the old iphone. I wasn’t expecting to, otherwise I would have brought a better camera.

So the jacket that I am wearing is Tony’s personal vintage shiny goat. RCSignals got the description right, I would say. It’s stiff stuff, but it’s so thin that it works. He also has it in a dull finish. The other goat that I saw yesterday is indeed the “Nowak goat”. I new that I liked what Tony has done it goatskin, but I really hadn’t paid attention to what was what.

The Nowak goat is the most like what you all know as goatskin. It’s light, pliable, and all that stuff. The texture is also the most “goat-like”. The vintage hides are very “tight” on the surface, though the hide is very thin. The Nowak goat will have the color come off, just like the shrunken lamb, but perhaps not as drastically. I did the “fingernail test” on it.

As a self proclaimed “leather jacket fool” (though perhaps not as "foolish" as some :Plymouth:),
I couldn’t help but start thinking about one of these. I already have to G&B goatskin Expeditions, I really don’t need more goatskin, but whatever.

Yesterday I thought that I would get the shiny vintage for sure, but after today I’m sort of on the “Nowak goat” bandwagon.

Rundquist, I read that you said the vintage goat is very thin and stiff. Would you still consider it to be durable as other goat hides? Do you think it will soften up some with wear? I ask this because the picture of you with Tony's jacket on looks to be draping quite nicely.

Tony's vintage goat jacket is 4 months old now! This is what it looked like 4 days after he made it: http://lh5.ggpht.com/_XRV9x3lC4ek/Si3ms ... G_4978.JPG

To me, it's a good leather for this: http://www.theraider.net/showimage.php? ... ns/r95.jpg

Well, it’s all relative. This goatskin is probably not as durable as a thicker goatskin. It’s still more durable than most leathers and will not tear. The jacket drapes fine. It's so light that it has an "airy" feeling to it. You’ll just never get the feeling that it’s soft. The vintage goatskin will be the “end-all-be-all” for some people and others won’t care for it as much. You guys are pretty much screwed trying to figure out if you like it without seeing it in person. I saw it in person and still had a hard time deciding what I liked best between the choices.

ps - I'm hoping I can swing one of these at the end of the year, so I've got time to figure it out. For now I'm trying to break in a G&B horsehide 334th fighter squadron A-2 that I've neglected for the last year. It needs more character.

I have another question for you. What type/style of indy jacket was Tony's? I like the idea that it is so lightweight because I live in Southern Louisiana, and a heavyweight leather jacket is practically useless here. From what I can tell the vintage goat has some light colored undertones that show through. Would you say that the shiny and the matte are the same color? And my last question. What is the price of the vintage goat?

Re: New Nowak Goatskin (Raiders Jacket)

I have samples of all three of these hides, and I would say their thickness is the same. I think the stiffness of the 'vintage' hides gives it the illusion of being thinner, but it in fact is not.
The vintage hide does loose some of it's stiffness with wear, but it does what it is designed to do, wrinkle easily and maintain those wrinkles, as well as distress to show great brown undertones. It's an ever changing hide in appearance.

I think that's from the shiney effect. I prefer the look of the non-shiney version

Raiders

Only real difference is one is shiney and one isn't. The colour is the same.
You'll have to ask Tony but I think the 'vintage' in a Raiders jacket is $750

Tony's is the shiny vintage. There's a load of choices out there (makers & leathers). As I said, some will love it and some will hate it, and some would choose making love to a live goat :- . It's your choice.

Not to mention, in that one picture, there's a shadow of the blinds on the jacket, making it look horizontally striped on the front. Naturally, the pictures don't convey the whole story. This jacket is very very cool in person, but even I'm dubious of the leather looking at the pictures, even after once professing my undying love for it (I don't like how the pleats look or how folded corners stay folded). The contrast of dark and light is more subtle in person, and the jacket seems darker (it's darker than the 000 jacket, and overall _seems_ darker than shrunken lamb to me). The fun part is that it'll get that lived in/adventurous look honestly, but in days not decades! I think it's a great match for a Surrogates jacket.

Anyways, if you look at the pictures, and you LIKE the jacket, BUY IT! :) (Tony quoted me $975 but not sure if that price still stands)
