I haven't bought a bag yet, but I'm having a hard time justifying buying a reproduction when I see through a simple google search that I can get the authentic atricle at this place called What Price Glory for a reasonable price.

Sorry if it's slightly off topic, but does anyone here have one of the MK VIIs from there? It mentions the "optional leather strap" for 12 dollars more, but there's no picture of it. Are the straps worth a darn for screen accuracy or durability?

I've carried a reproduction for almost 8 years now, having two authentic bags completely disintegrate on me with regular use.....so those are kept for 'archival' purposes, and I'll stick with reproductions for use.

I'm not nearly as careful with the reproduction, as I KNOW if it gets damaged, it's easily replaced. Ironically, that attitude seems to make the bag want to prove me wrong, as it's still in great shape! It was also a gift from my good friend Indiana Jess, and was one of the first WPG reproductions offered.

I felt pretty bad when the originals fell apart.

Were they "well-used" when you bought them? I'm asking because I have no experience of MKVII disintegrating, although all my bags are mint or nearly-mint condition. The only bag of mine that got ruined was one with a hole in it, the hole grew bigger within months (or weeks) of use.

I've had a 50/50 experience with the original bags I've gotten. Truth be told, I've gotten far more mileage out of my Magnoli repro than any of my original bags. Anyhow, this thread was stickied in hopes of obtaining new information on original bags and manufacturers, so we might want to start a new thread for discussing the old versus new bag debate.

Agreed, bink, but close this loop.... no, Erri, they were both in good shape, but like you, both slowly fell apart due to a hole starting in the middle of the canvas and growing within months of being put into use.

It's not a design flaw. It's just the age of the material in question, and not something that should surprise us if/when it occurs.

I've had two Mk VII's in beautiful condition and both have failed at the point where the stray ring attaches..

I have 'Maple' Mk VI from 1941 that has two drain holes! It gets used everyday, thankfully I live in the UK where I get away with wearing it everyday ...

Got my 2nd bag today, a W & G MkVII from '42, excellent condition from ebay UK the other day, pictures to follow of this one and my Maple '41

Addictive stuff, all I need now is a stap from Wade ..

Didn't realize how much more room the VII had over the VI, very useful ..

Here is a MK VI that I've had for a couple of years. It's the 3 hole version like the SFX bag in TOD. (The true color is closest to the bottom picture)

It's also a Canadian bag knibs. Woods might have been the only Canadian manufacturer. They also made MkVII's.

That's What Price Glory. Their original bags apparently are mostly new but some have reported getting bags with dry rot.

I just got mine through (check out eBay for "gas mask bag" and scroll through them - I spotted mine - it was not listed as a Mark VII anywhere and I snagged it for £10 Buy It Now).

While I'm at it, here's another Mark VII bag I picked up a while ago - seems very strange in that it has quite a few design features that are different from all the mark VII's I've seen listed here:

WAHAB 1942 M.K.VII

The corners of the bag flap are squared 90 degrees rather than folded under at a 45 degree angle.

It doesn't have any snaps. Instead it has some sort of metal post that goes through a button hole in the bag flap.

Aside from the maker and date, it also features "I G", which I don't see listed on the marking identification key listed earlier in this thread. Any ideas what that refers to?

Hello everybody, one and all. I am new here and looking to learn some stuff. I hope it is ok if I can just jump in with a probably dumb and unanswerable question!

I am looking to put together my first Indy ensemble - a reasonable entry level Raiders outfit I think. A starting point that I can modify, develop and build on later.

I am lucky as I live close to the Wested Factory shop so that should make things easier to get started in some ways.

Now about the bag - I know just from reading here and my own re-enacting and surplus collecting that there are so many varieties of the Mk VI/VII haversack. Soldier of Fortune sells many but one in particular is the W&G bag which they describe as 'the' Indy bag and have it listed at an astonishing price compared to what such a bag normally is.

1) Is the W&G really 'the one' or as I think from above, just one of many 'ones'?
2) Is it a good idea to get a W&G from SoF while they have a few, even at that price?
3) If my budget can't justify that much money for a bag, will a normal price one be a good starting point?
4) which one would be the best one to start out with?

W & G is just one maker that was specifically mentioned at the auction of one screen-used bag, there's not that big a difference between the makers.

Well, when it comes to screen accurate I found the opposite with my 2 original W&G bags. They look way more olive-green then what's on film and the little string loop is way shorter also. My M&Co.H bag is the perfect color and the loop is the right length. I also like it's rough faced buttons rather then the smooth ones on the W&G.

and who knows or could prove the the accuracy of the 'screen used' claim for that particular bag?

RCSignals and VP are very correct. The W&G was mentioned because popped up at an auction (I don't even remember from which film but I believe Last Crusade)... since then it became THE BAG! But really it's not worth any more than the others, they must have had dozens of different brands for the film production. Thanks to some details (snap buttons more often than anything else) you might reduce the range of brands a bit but there is not a single detail will give away one specific brand from scene to scene.

Some like their bags more green, others more "sand" colour. Some people like rigged snap buttons, others flat ones... there is so many models that will fit you taste if you are mad for details... otherwise just ANY bag will do really! (personally I love them all)
What is more important than the brand is finding one in excellent condition as there are many case of rottening with use or even with storage.

That one I kept for myself... I'm not sure if there are others. I'd have to dig through to see, but of the couple of dozen I have gone through, I haven't seen another ILM stamp.
