Sizing Help

Post by feathers73 »

Hey. I have an older US Wings XXL goat Indy jacket. It is one of the older ones with the two piece back sleeves. I think they were imported. The jacket is a little snug on me. Did these run small or am I just too fat? The measurements are sleeve 24.5 which is ok, length 26.25 which is ok, width arm pit to arm pit 26 (remember it is snug in the belly area, yes I'm fat) and shoulder across is 24. I can't seem to figure out how I could order a Wested or G&B with these measurements but slightly wider to accommodate my girth. Does anyone have any experience with the old US Wings goat in XXL that has also tried on similar sizes in Wested and G&B that could relate to my problem and give some guidance? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks :-k

Check your PM's for my attempt at sound advice. Not everyone agrees with me, but I have only my own experiences to draw from. If I had to take a wild guess, I'd say you're a 52 long.

If the Wings jacket you have now measures 26 inches across the chest, then
its actually closer to size XL, not an XXL.

The body length and sleeve length seem to be closer to an XL also. You may have
one that was mislabeled. It happens sometimes to the best of them!

From info here on this website, the Wings jackets all run slightly big
in each size, not snug or small. So yours seems bit off the mark.

As a reference, most Wings mediums have a pit to pit of 23 inches, the
larges have a pit to pit of 25, the XL pit to pit it 27 and the XXL should
be around 29 pit to pit.

All of these can vary by a half inch or so, but if you go thru the old posts
on the forum, you will see the above is pretty accurate for the Wings
Indy (Adventurer) style jackets.

But, ultimately, in order to get a jacket that fits you correctly, you need
to know your own body measurements.

If you don't have a cloth tape measure, and can't do your own measurements,
then go to any mens clothing place, and they will be happy to measure you.

You need to know your height, weight, chest measurement, waist measurement,
sleeve measurement and neck measurement. Some people will even measure
their upper arms also, if they work out alot, as they can have larger than normal
biceps.

Once you have all of that, take a jacket that you already own, and that fits you
the way you want it to (NOT the Wings jacket you currently have) and measure that.

Zip it up, lay it down flat on your bed, facing up, and smooth it out as much as you
can.

Then, measure it from one armpit seam, across the chest, to the other. Write this
number down.

Then measure it from the shoulder seam, down the outside of the sleeve, down to
the end of the cuff. Write this number down.

Flip the jacket over, lay it flat again, and measure it from the base of the collar (where
the collar and the back panel come together and make a seam) all the way down the
center of the back, down to the bottom of the hem. Write this number down.

Now, armed with your own body measurements, and the measurements of a good fitting
jacket you already own, you can then call any vendor you would like a jacket from,
and ask them what size jacket they recommend for you that will fit as good as
the one you own, by comparing your jackets measurements to their offerings.

Good luck!

Holt they are about 27"-27.5" for a medium, and the longs a bit more but not much.
Almost more like a car jacket length.

They are not that long! It's a popular misconception. Wings make their jackets to look right, not necessarily screen accurate, so they are a little long.
I have two XXL jackets. The longest is the special edition vintage cowhide, which is longer like the CS jacket. That one has a 28 1/4" back.
My regular Goatskin jacket (also XXL) has a 26.75" back. Far from a car coat when you're that big.

Another data point, I have a G&B 48 long. It fits but is more of a military fit. I want my indy jacket to be a little looser. I may just go with a G&B 50L or 52L if they would make one that big. I'm just afraid of it getting too long.

Mine is that long, I measured it, and it's a medium.

Are you including the collar stand? Or starting at the bottom of the collar stand? Is it maybe a 'tall' size? :-k

Measured from the bottom of the collar stand (collar stand not included), and it is a Regular.

I emailed Wings a while back. They confirmed that their jackets are about 27 inches in length, regardless of size. That is precisely why I didn't order one (I would take a Small, usually wearing a 38).

I don't think it's a mistake, because I actually have two. I've been trying to sell at least one, anyway, they are both the same size and both measure the same (one actually slightly longer)

I'm only commenting on the length. They are nice quality and well made jackets.

Maybe something changed after my Goatskin was made. The dreadful "p" word - progess! Doesn't both me any, though. I need the length. For a size 38; not so good. ](*,)

My Wings Vintage Cow Indy jacket, which is a size large, measures
exactly 27 inches from the base of the collar down to the bottom hem.

It does seem from the people posting here that they use the 27 inch
length for most of their Indy jacket offerings. At least the size medium,
large and XL.

If someone with a small and XXL could pipe in, we could see if this
holds true for those two sizes as well.

According to the Excel chart US Wings sent me last year, sizes XS, S, M, L, and XL all have a back length of 27 1/4 inches, with a tolerance of + or - 1/2 inch. Sizes XXL and XXXL have a back length of 28 1/4, + or - 1/2 inch. Perhaps that has since changed. The chart was specific to their goatskin Indy jacket, but I assume it is the same for the other leathers. Looking at the other measurements on the chart, you can see that Wings' Indy jackets run very very large, particularly if you wear a 40 or less. If there is a way to upload a document, I would post the chart.

This is not the first time that my info has clashed with RC's. I really think it's evidence of a change in recent years. But, as Michaelson points out on another thread... it could all be solved by writing to Sgt. Hack. The only reason I have never done so is because US Wings jackets fit my body type RIGHT. A rare thing in the Indy jacket trade, as it turns out. :anxious:
