Batman Fedoras

Post by DR Ulloa »

I am watching the Tim Burton Batman film and there are some very nice looking hats in the movie that I never noticed before. In fact, the hat that Nicholson wears looks like it is being worn turned. The brim distorts just like Indy's does. I'll see if I can get a screen grab.

Nice catch, Dave! :D This has been on TV by me recently and I noticed the same thing. All of a sudden you see hats where you never did before. Now I know I have an addiction. ;)

The Nicholson hat I'm talking about is the black porkpie he wears as Napier, not the Joker. In fact, this hat that he wears has me rethinking porkpies altogether.

There is one scene where it looks like it was turned, but that's not unusual. Your average hat wearer doesn't get his hat on straight every time. Especially without a pinch to guide him!

I suppose it's not a true pork pie because the brim is so wide. Technically, it's a fedora with a telescope crown, which is easy enough to do.

Ever dance with the Devil in the pale snow in the driveway?

It's just an old Federation III, no turn. To duplicate Jack's, I think the brim should not be dimensionally cut.

I also used to have a Miller Indy that I bashed like Detective Eckhart's from the same movie. It's a good hat movie, no doubt.

Eckhart's hat is a very nice one. I think it might be my favorite in the whole movie. And I think your right about Napier's hat. The brim seems too wide for a porkpie. It must be a telescoping crowned fedore with no pinch.

As many times as i had seen this film it wasn't until i finally saw it in HD that i started to really notice all the detail in the Hats...this goes for Mr. Burton's Batman Returns as well. There are a great deal of nice hats. I really like the one that Knox wears, as well as the one that Eckhart wears. That said some of the extras wore some nice lids as well, that don't get the screen time for significant notice and on regular DVD often look blurry and non descript.

Note this is not an endorsement of blu-ray and im am not affiliated with blu-ray...LOL

but blu is sweet!!!! and its even cooler on a big projection television. Imagine Indy on an 8 ft screen in full HD!!!

Sorry, but Indy was never meant for HD. He needs to be grainy and old-school. :CR:

Indy wasn't meant to be pixelated either. Which is why I anxiously await his arrival on blu.

No kidding! and Chewbacca JOnes don't worry HD just produces the look of the films original intentions so if its grainy and rough it looks. Predator is the grainiest, rough lookin' flick and its awesome on HD, it comes alive. I hope the charm of Indy is given this when it hits HD! I can't wait, im gonna be standing outside BestBuy the day they come out, take a day off just to watch'em!

Ok back on topic, Batman Hats

Really? I didn't know that. Very interesting. I guess HJ did a lot of film work back some years ago.

I believe when in the UK they needed custom hats (such as a purple hat like Nicholson wears) their only hope was asking Herbert Johnson.

Nicholson's purple hat was from Herbert Johnson, I know that for a fact.

Who said that Christy made hats for Batman?

No one. It's sort of an 'inside' joke that anytime someone at Christy's is asked about a movie connection, they ALWAYS say 'SURE, WE were involved....' with a nudge and a wink....but they never provide proof.

That said, it IS know a lot of producers and actors are customers, that's a fact....but them actually having an actual 'hands on' connection to a film has ALWAYS been word of mouth by someone in the store, and nothing is EVER provided to back it up. They've done that since we first came across them in 1996 at Indyfan.com. :[

As far as I know, they made all the fedoras for the film classic Ben Hur as well. (what fedoras, you ask? I'm sure they shot the scenes, but they were cut to shorten the length of the film. :- ;) )

Yeah, HJ used to bespoke hats. Reckon they stopped after Raiders? Or was the Batman mentioned shot after Raiders?

Personally, I totally detest porkpies, especially the really short crowned ones. Some hats just look comedic to me, and the porkpie is one of them. Even the name is comedic.

Purple hats, and bright yellow hats like the one in Dic.k Tracy ain't my cup of tea. But if you love attention, wear one! Fedora

Batman was 1989 so I believe they never really stopped making bespoke hats. Don't know about now but at least until they had an actual shop (not a branch in Swaine Adney Brigg) they made bespoke hats.

I still have to verify Who Framed Roger Rabbit hat :P

I took a screen grab of Eckhart's hat and Napier's. Chewie is right. Nicholson's hat is too tall and wide brimmed to be a porkpie. It has to be a telescoping crowned fedora.

That is precisely why I posted Eckhart's hat. It looks a lot like the ToD/LC poet model. It even has a LC style pinch. The hat that Nicholson is wearing is clearly turned. The brim distorts just like Ford's hat does in Raiders. I wonder if this was done on purpose or accidentally. The only other scene in which this hat appears is when Napier and his men are raiding Axis Chemicles and it is also turned there as well, though not as dramatically as it is in this scene.

I don't think that's a turn, DR. If you watch closely throughout both scenes, the brim itself is simply not evenly "snapped." As most here know, HJ's are rather soft felts, so getting a swoop or a wobbly brim is very easy, and the shape of the wearers head will effect the brim more easily. The front shots are the give-away that there isn't really a turn (or at least not more than your average bad aim). The front of the brim should be more distorted on a turned hat.

I agree with chewbacca, I don't see a turn either. I've had HJs doing that effect on the brim without any turn into them.

I always liked Knox's hat best in that movie. I can't find any really good pictures of it online, but it's definitely got a timeless shape to it.
