The reworked Fed4 'Holt' streets of Cairo

Post by Holt »

Hi Guys.

well not long ago I cleaned it, wet it down and took out the bash and pinch.let it stay over night with an open crown.and so on...

I decided to rework the hat once more. alittle lower crown.etc.

here is the hat now reworked into what I think become more SA the before. more beat up. more dust and stains. etc.

please tell me what do you think of it now?

bear in mind the angels might be of.

Image Image

EDIT

This hat will be for display only, so now I want a new hat I can attack  ;)

This new crown height is more SA. You were right in your thinking. The other crown height didn't look bad on you, but this one is more SoC. Very nice work on the distressing too. This is definately one of the mist SA hats I've seen. Definetly the most SA SoC hat. I would love to see what you coul do with a Penman or AB blocled on their new Raiders blocks. I'm tempted to send you my SoC AB  . You have a great attention to detail, Eric. Great job!

its just the angle of the picture. the hat is almost identical but the crown is lower now. its more SA.

no its not te same hat I did the LC with. thats another fed.

Im sure Steve will see that the crown is lower on this one. I eager to hear what he thinks of the second round on this one.

I am particaly proud of the little swoop in the brim. not the turn swoop on the right side. okay, well that too..

you can see what I mean on the left side on the brim..if you look closely you can see it on Indy's hat to. alltough it may be hard to make out on Indy's hat......but its there..

nope.. My first ''real'' was a christys.. but that one I wrecked totaly. then came a fed 4 which I turned into the LC. then this hat here.... and then IndyG.

so his hat was the last hat I got.

You corrected the crown height issue. And, IMHO, you will never be outdone with this SOC fedora Holt. You have set the benchmark for this particular hat. I am so impressed!

By the way, what crown height did you end up with, if you measure from the old brim break...? (we all realize the ribbon has been slid upwards, so don't measure from the bottom of the ribbon, but rather where the original brim break was)

On the front, the sides, and the back? I think what you tell us will be the original height of the SOC hat, in the film. This crown height has been debated for years. Your hat appears to be dead on in crown height to the film hat, so this would be great info for all of the fans here. Great work Holt. Fedora

lets see..its between 4.5'' and 4.75'' at the top front pinch. it varies abit from time to time, depends on how deep I pinch the front and dent the crown.... and 5'' at the side crown.

Holt, thanks for the measurements. Your hat looks absolutely amazing! I agree, I think you’ve set the benchmark with this one.

One more question, did you reshape the crown when you wet it down, or does it still have the basic block shape it had when you got it form Hats Direct? Just wondering because mine seems a lot more rounded off on the sides at the top.

Thanks,
Scott

you can find my hat unworn in the ''streets of cairo'' hat display page. there you can see how it looks unworn and how the block shape is.

you can quote the pictures in here if you want.

Holt, I just pull my hat!

Even then, when everyone thinks, you can't get any closer, you pull of something like this.
I really like it and you really have an eye for figuring out all the little details of the SoC fed.

How deep do you bash the side dents? I tried and tried and they just never look right. Not boxy enough and all.

Daniel

It's incredibly hard to get the bash right, and even more to get the angles right... you nailed both! Perhaps I'll look into the Street of Cairo aswell! Your achievement is almost historical around here (yeah I've said it! Someone had to!), I've never seen a hat matching so many scenes so perfectly. It will hard to try achieve anything better than that!
Blimey, you even got the lighting spot on... that's a meticulous job!

I'm surprised you didn't get the usual question "yes yes BUT how does it look from the back?"... "can we see a 360° of the hat" etc...

Great job, I'm envious end yet intrigued! I MUST try it too.

but I have to say, no I cant. sorry..this is not done in 5 minutes. its done in days...its alot of work. and I dont have the time....

and Im sure my head shape is different than yours. maby have different sizes too and if I bashed it, it might look way different on your head then it would on mine.

I recommend you start out little by little.. I did the same when I first got my hat... ;)

Holt - as many have said, this hat is inspirational! Newb question: would you recommend softening/distressing up the felt all over the whole hat on a Fed IV before you put the bash in it? Or should you bash it first, then do the softening/distressing?

I dont know. just make it soft, I dont think bashing it before or after would make so much of a differ.

but the felt is extremly hard to work with, especially the deluxe. so it requirs alot of work to get it floppy.

thx btw :TOH:

Dead on!! And that is WHY you won't see a SOC hat this accurate from me, or Marc, or even John. Our production would be one hat per week!!! I KNOW the kind of work that it took to get a new hat to look like this. This is better left up to the customer, if they want one as accurate as yours. Because face it, the SOC fedora looks like it is ready for a refurb, and has seen years of wear, which of course, it did not. Fedora

hehe

That is the best Raiders hat I've seen apart from the one on Ford's head. EXCELLENT work!

Thanx.

I took away a few pictures in my first post becuz I took a few more pictures of it today.

here is a cleaner picture of the famous ''swoop'' or ''turn''
Image

in this picture you really can see the reverse taper and the back of the crown bulging over the ribbon. you can also see the bulge on the side. and the swoop on the brim and how low the front brim goes.
Image

close up of the crown and the pinch. good for reference. ;)
Image

bear in mind the angle in this picture below is not of the best, but it was the best out of the lot. extremley hard to get this angle right.but you get the idea ;)

I love that third picture. It looks stunning from that angle. The only thing I would do to that hat, Eric, is work on the bow. If you could get that puffy "v" on the bow like in the Raiders hat, it would make it look better...just about the only thing that can make it look better.

Thanks for the new pictures, Eric!

They really help, to get a look of how deep or how far back, you bashed the sides. No matter how hard I try, I just don't get the right look on those side dents and I just can't put my finger on it, why...

However, I really admire your work, but as good as it look, I think a big part of the look is the right angle and of course, the right lighting. This way, also the shadows falls like in Raiders!

Keep up the good work, you are inspiring lots of people around here, to take their hat and abuse it :H:
