Bullwhip tip is shredded how can i fix this [w/pics]

Post by Mola Ram Wilson »

I have a whip that was my fathers before he passed away and I'm not sure if it is an Indy whip or if it was just used to look like one. So if you could tell me from these pics that would be great. Also if not what can i do to make it look more like an indy whip.
And if you look at the tip it is a little messed up, I don't know what to do about that.

Wilson,
from what I can see the core of your whip is a fibrous rope (hemp maybe) and I'm sad to say, it is not an Indy style whip. These whips are made purely as decorations and are not designed to be cracked, you're lucky it only frayed at the tip and that it didn't break in two!

My advise to you is to look up Bernie's whip repair videos on Youtube and see if you can't fix it yourself, otherwise tie the end so that it doesn't fray anymore and leave it alone. There is no way to turn this whip into a cracking whip and you will only further damage it if you keep on using it. My advise is to leave it alone.

Yes, this sadly isn't an Indy whip. My wife bought me what looks like an S&M whip for my first indy halloween costume, and it looks a lot like this one.

Hi Wilson

I concur with Canuck Digger. It looks like it may be from Pakistan or possibly India. I would just re plait the strands as best as I can ( its only a 4 plait which is pretty simple), give it a coat of dressing or black shoe polish, and find a nice place to hang it up somewhere as a keepsake from your father. If you would like to start your own tradition and venture into this hobby, then consider getting your own whip. Mark Allen at Western Stage Props offers a nice beginners set at a good price : http://www.westernstageprops.com/miva/m ... ry_Code=AB
Hope this helps!
Take Care!

Wilson,
you can go through the vendors section and see many whipmakers who offer a good starter's whip for the budget-minded adventurer (commonly know as Indy On A Budget, or IOAB). These are usually made with a good internal structure (meaning a braided belly) but will normally have fewer strands making up the outside (or Overlay) or the whip. These are very good value for the buck and are a good way to get into whip cracking. Naturally they are not as evolved or intricate as full-on 12 plait, double plaited belly kangaroo hide bullwhips, but are a far sight better than what you now have and have the distinction of being made with cracking in mind, not just as a pretty wall handger.

I don't want to offend anyone by forgetting to mention them here, so I will leave that part of the research to you. All I can say is something that has become a bit of an axiom in whip making circles; good whips aren't cheap and cheap whips aren't good...
Cheers,

Franco

PS-You could also consider a second-hand whip, which would allow you to get your hands on a professional whip at a fraction of the cost... Some whipmakers offer such a service to their clients and naturally, there is also good 'ol Ebay, but if you are going to go that route, I would caution you to not fall for flashy adds that promise heaven and earth; stick to well-known makers.

Ya, I have to agree w/all the advice you've been given Mola Ram Wilson. When I bought my Joe Strain, I had to sink a few dollars into it. The one I had before this was a 8', unsure of plaiting, unsure of MFG. Didn't crack to well, but looked ok on the wall. Still I had fun trying. I'll see if I can find it for you. Another tip, keep looking in the Ciro bizzar, it's the first thing I check on when I enter this holy of sites. Never no what you might find. Start saving those nickels and dimes Mr. , cause now that you've joined our happy little circle, you'll go broke. :whip:

And have fun doing it.
