What do I do with this stinkin' hat?!

Post by inexpensive_jones »

After getting very wet, a hat of mine has developed a slight scent like that of a wet animal. I've had wool felts do this but this one is beaver. I thought of a dab of patchouli oil. Any other suggestions?

Fabreeze it. Most hats will emit an animal smell when wetted. Like wet hair. Fedora

What do you mean by eventually? Weeks, months, years?
I've waited a couple months so far, it's time to do something about it.
It's not overpowering by any means, just annoying to me.

Don't wait for the wind to blow the stink off of the hat.

Get either scented or non-scented Febreeze.

If fabreeze don't do it, put some baking soda in a sock and seal it inside a plastic bag withe the hat for a few days.

Wasn't there a naptha soak treatment that worked? Or am I mis-remembering?

I hope you are kidding about this. You'd be better off rubbing your beaver hat in dog droppings than putting patchouli oil on it.

The smell will be right above your nose and will soon start to annoy you beyond belief. I would go with something milder. I think Fabreeze might be a good start.

The naptha soak would probably work, but that's what you use when you need to clean and reblock a dirty hat. ;)

That reminds me of the MAD Magazine cartoon I saw when they lampooned Crystal Skull. It's got Indy spraying his hat with a spray bottle, and the caption reads something like: "Realizing that febreeze stopped working on the ol' chapeau 15 years ago."

Febreez can almost literally take the stink out of anything (within reason). When I used to smoke I used to spray myself with it before coming home from bars to hide the smell. Thankfully I've long since quit smoking, but cant smell febreez without craving a cigarette. :P

It doesn't work on cigar smoke in leather jacket linings.

Been there, tried that....gave up and did something else....
