Why did they deciede to put pleats down the full front of Indy's shirt instead of just on the pockets?

My guess would be the designer was briefed to make the shirt look interesting in sans jacket scenes. It's funny how such a subtle detail really enhances the shirt.

I agree. I think they wanted to make the shirt unique...and they succeeded. It's a minor detail compared to the rest of the gear, but it really makes the shirt special.

The early Lucasfilm output had a lot of the 'take real world stuff and add a bit to make them unique' attitude. ie Graflex Lightsabers, Sterling Stormtrooper blasters, MKVII with a leather strap etc.

No doubt this came from the same school of thought. It really helped ground stuff and make it feel more real.
