Mitch's Distressed Penman's Raiders rabbit updated with pics
The title says it all.
This is Mitch's hat before the fullers earth and distressing.

Definately look like it has taken a beating. Looks great. I know Michaelson probably wouldn't approve because its not naturally distressed, but hey I have seen people really distress their jacket way worse than that hat.

Re: Mitch's Distressed Penman's Raiders rabbit
I commented on it in the SoC display thread, but it bears repeating. This hat just screams SoC to me. The distressing is top notch. Great work on this hat, John...by the way, is this rabbit or beaver? I'm tired of guessing because you pounce your rabbit out so well that it looks like beaver.

Sincerest THANKS John... Both for making this hat for me and for posting these shots.
I'm... almost speechless. Cant wait to "meet her" in person.
And don't worry Chewie, if he really DID miss a spot, I'm sure I'LL get it eventually through wear.
In awe.

Re: Mitch's Distressed Penman's Raiders rabbit
Hi everyone.
I'm just checking in. I'm out of town (and away from my "regular" computer) for a few days... specifically, until Thursday or so...
Right now, I'm just checking in from my brothers in Maine.
Sorry I haven't been on this thread (or the SOC Thread either) as I'm really wanting to read more (and more thoroughly) of what I'm reading at a glance... I wish I had more time to comment, too as I have plenty I'd like to say about John's Distressed Hat.
By the way, John I HAVE sent you confirmation, TWICE now - both through a PM to you as well as through your Penman Hats e-mail. But now I'm worried, are you NOT getting them? If you AREN'T, please accept this statement as a public declaration (and everyone here can be a "witness" The jpg. of the address you sent me IS correct!)
So...
PLEASE
SEND
HAT!
bink, I'm glad you're having a chuckle at my expense... but I can tell you miss my liberal use of CAPITALIZED EMBOLDENMENTATIONALIZING... assuming that is a real word... which I'm not.
Lookin' forward to getting home and checking in again soon.
Hope you're all well.
Must run.
Cheers folks!

Re: Mitch's Distressed Penman's Raiders rabbit
My son just called me at work to let me know that "the Postman is here with your (Penman) distressed hat, Dad!"...
4 hours until I get home! I can't wait to see it.
(But before anyone says anything about photos speaking louder than words, I should let you know... I probably won't be able to get any photos taken tonight for a few reasons: a prior commitment & the camera's battery requiring a recharge among them.)
I'll definitely try for tomorrow night, though...
All the Best,
Mitch
Oh, and thanks guys for all your kind interest in seeing some shots of what I'm sure will be a pretty dang "photo-friendly" hat!
And to gwyddion & mississippilong: fellas, as soon as I figure out how to make an album (and figure out how to create a link to it (me AM that computer dumb) I'll be happy to oblige.

Re: Mitch's Distressed Penman's Raiders rabbit
Hi everyone,
I'd just like to say a quick "sorry" for the delay in getting these photos posted.
I'd also like to extend a quick apology to John,,, because I want to post a few photos, but I don't think that these photos are the ones that will best do his hat justice.
Here's how things went down since the beginning of this week:
If you've read down through this thread, you'll know that the hat arrived on Monday (but we were unable to get any photos taken that night)... as I mentioned here:
I love it.
Yesterday, when my wife and I were driving home from work, all I wanted to do was get home, get a few bites of food into me and then get outside for some shots wearing John's hat (and THIS is the important part): WHILE the SUN was still shining on it.
You see, this being a Streets of Cairo Hat and all, I naturally thought it only fair that I had photos taken wearing this handsome lid that showed the warm, bright sun beating down on it.
The sun was bright and the sky was a beautiful blue as we began our drive home. But during the last 10 minutes of our drive it all began to slip away: clouds, mist and fog were slowly starting to form and the forecast for the evening was for wind and drizzle to move in with the possibility of showers...
DANG!
But I certainly wasn't going to NOT post anything. So, after a quick bite my lovely - but married - photographer and I stepped outside to take just a couple of shots...
I should also mention that in all the rush to beat the imminent rain, I put the hat on pretty quickly (so if it looks a little bit uncentered - or even lopsided - please excuse).
Even putting that issue aside, however, it was already too late for what I'd originally hoped for... the wind HAD, in fact, started to pick up and everything was cooling off.
And the sun?
Gone baby gone.
No warm, sunny backdrop for my new hat THAT day, I can tell ya!
Regardless, we took some shots and they're presented for you here (along with a few links).
I hope you still like 'em, but I think I can give you better shots soon (and thankfully, there's sun in the forecast straight through to the end of the weekend...)
So, my plan is that it'll be these photos for another 2 or 3 days and then I'll put up something I hope I'll think is a little nicer (and hopefully shows off John's great hat a little better, too)...
Once I change the photos, a few of the ones you see here will maaaybe still appear as links... but maybe not... So, don't be surprised if after this weekend you don't see some of these here in this thread anymore.
Please, though, let me know what you think... both with THESE photos AND the ones I'll post in a few days (I'm thinkin' it might be time to break out ALL the Gear for a few shots!)
Thanks for the great hat, John.
I hope I'll soon be posting some shots that REALLY show it off.

Re: Mitch's Distressed Penman's Raiders rabbit
Fox, that hat is simply beautiful. John did a fantastic job with this hat. With some wear, this hat will really begin to transform into a SoC style hat. In fact, this is the first artificially distressed hat that has me thinking about doing the same to one of mine. Thats saying something as I have always been opposed to the idea.

Re: Mitch's Distressed Penman's Raiders rabbit updated with pics
Thanks guys!
And thanks especially to YOU, Dave. Having you say that this is the first artificially distressed hat that has you thinking about doing the same to one of yours is quite a compliment on John's work!
Like you, I'd been opposed to the idea of aging and distressing a hat "before it's time" - and I DO still want to let MOST of my hat's live out their lives under those terms - but if you're anything like me, your willpower to say "no" to the idea has been pummeled & beaten down quite handily by all of the gorgeous "weathered" SoC Hat photos we've seen lately (from the insanely talented LLS, the meticulous & gifted Holt and, of course, "Le Chapelier Fou" , fedoraiders!
As for my Penman Distressed Rabbit, I will admit it's quite a thrill to just pull a beautiful, newly made hat (with all of John's expected levels of excellence) straight out of a box and have it look "street-ready".
Sure, it looks a bit beaten up (and you're RIGHT, with wear it will settle in nicely and take on it's own interesting SoC characteristics) but right now it STILL feels fantastic and new!
It's kinda' deceiving, really... but that sounds like a strange sounding way to pay a compliment.
I'm still hoping to post a few "sunshine at high noon" pictures before this weekend is over... but I'm glad you guys like the way the hat looks so far!

Lookin' good Fox, the fedora look just suits you. And as usual, John's work speaks for itself, as the hat looks great! To me, one of the things that makes and Indy fedora, an Indy fedora, is the dirty ribbon. Pretty much the whole film, the ribbon is dusty and dirty, and it gives the hat such a nice character. Now all you have to do Fox is take some more full gear pics, roll around in the dust and dirt to get the rest of the gear to match the hat, and I'm sure it will look amazing

Drat!
I wish I could say I like the hat Mitch but all the photos are blocked over here. I am keeping up to date on all the dialogue around these parts but I cannot see any pictures.
Well, I can bet that John did a great job and even though I can’t see the hat I will step out on faith here and say that it looks great.
John sure knows how to make a hat, enjoy the heck out of it. (In retrospect if heck starts issuing forth from your fedora you may have some serious problems, not to mention Oak having some liability issues)
Regards to all,
Hollis

Re: Mitch's Distressed Penman's Raiders rabbit updated with pics
I just wanted to take a second and say thanks for the kind words on my new hat... sadly, we're getting rain and high winds for today & tomorrow, so we're not gonna be able to get the "Hot Cairo Sun at High Noon" shots I wanted to get taken this weekend...
Once the sun DOES come back out - hopefully sometime next week - I'm hoping to do as I said before and get some shots taken that I hope will show off John's hat a little better (and give me a good excuse to get Geared Up and get out in the woods!)
In the meantime, though... there are a couple of other shots showing John's hat on my noggin in my "A Trick of the Light: Photographing My Fedora" Thread that I started... check 'em out if you get a chance.
Thanks again folks!
Mitch
