Hallo,
I enjoyed seeing all the SOC hat styling in the forum, so I thought it could be nice to have a dedicated page where everyone's can display his own hat work - specifying the hat model. Here's my attempt with fed4deluxe:

Could someone clear this up for me; what is the difference between the Streets of Cairo style and for example the Peru style? I know there's a difference I just haven't looked into it, dunno what details to look for.

Basic difference is that the Peruvian Temple hat was new, as they had just started filming the movie inside Elstree studios. On the other hand, the Streets of Cairo hat, or 'Scene of Cairo' fedora, as our friend likes to say

, was a very well battered and weathered hat during the filming of the Streets of Cairo scenes. Filmed during action sequences, outside in 100f +++ degree heat, in Tozeur & Kairouan, Tunisia, the hat quickly developed quite a bit of character, taking on heat, dust and all sorts of weathering.

yes. EXACTLY the front pinch and the bump in the right side are very important.

I worked hard myself to get these. along with the floppy brim and the heart shaped crown amomg other things...

The Peru hat is lightly dusted, and, depending on what segment of the of the Peru venture you are looking at, the hat has less "turn" to it and appears to be more "boxy" in shape on the crown. The center bash tends not to be very deep.
The Cairo hat it extremely dirty, dented, turned, and beaten. It sets more on the back of Indy's head with the front of the brim pulled down over the eyes. The brim break on the front is not crisp. It, also, sets lower on his head in general.

I'm still working on mine before I present it. All you guys have been very educational in understanding the way this hat should look in this scene. I noticed also that the bump on the left side looking at the crown/ribbon border is more prominent on the rear when looking at the hat in a profile more than others. See as this screengrab illustrates.

I would assume it is just the way the hat is adjust from take to take, being puled down tighter in the back, handled differently each take etc.

That's "freaking insanely awesome", sorry folks who are not a fan of the bulging high crown Indy hat but, THAT"S my kind of Indy lid!!!

That's what I would love to see when my Adventurebilt finally comes in the mail (hint, hint), and not to mention I have a longer facial structure as well. It doesn't look like a generic brown, "mid-height crowned" fedora that happens to have no taper. Ok, 'nuff said.

I haven't done anything to it, but wear it. I've used Michaelson's view of weathering...let it happen naturally. By the way, I love this hat!

Not only is the hat beautiful, the distressing is awesome.....but what I see most...even though it looks beat up and totally SOC........The bow work is incredible. THAT is attention to detail!

In my opinion you can't get the SOC without distressing the hat. The brim break has to be broken and the hats has to be dirty and sweat stained. A lot of the brim has to be wreaked to get the look of the SOC hat. It's very hard for me to send out the hat like I did for Mitch and I didn't do the full monty on it , just a little distressing.

John, that distressing is awesome! I'm not a fan of articial distressing and would never do it to one of my hats (I like to let them gain their own character ), but that is one great looking SoC hat.

I'm with you David. I hated putting this in a box to ship off to Mitch but I couldn't say no to him. It really doesn't matter how close I distress a hat to look SA to SOC and I could do a heck of a lot better. It would never stay that way. The person who wears it and handles it would change the look. not meaning to but every person handles things differently and shape of the head is different. Like snow flacks. Ok, it's official. I'm loosing it.

John, i know the beaver felt is more durable but its also so beautiful as well. I agree it would pain me to artificially distress my Penman. But you've done a great job and it looks very SA.

Indiana Holt that is Amazing.Don't get me wron there are other nice SOC style hats on here as well.But to me yours screams it.I'll be honest I have put off buying a hat cause I wanted" THE ONE" hat in my collection and there was too many being thrown out there from makers, now I think it's about time I buy my hat. Pennmans rabbit looks awesome, but your hat loos spot so it would be nice to see what on the market is closest to actual stock used as well as hat block as to the original from Herbert Johnson back in the day, then with your distressing...(Angels sing)

Holt, that is the best replication of the SOC hat, I have EVER seen. Period. $\:D/$

But, my curiosity is killing me. HOW does the hat look from the side? The back? That front shot is dead on accurate. The trouble I always ran into, way back, is that I could get a hat to look accurate to a certain scene, say from the front, but it was "off" from the sides, or even the back. And I have seen plenty of hats here, over the years that looked great from the front, but lost it, when a 360 shot was done. Still, from the front, this hat is dead on. Fedora

the picture to the right was taken before I did all the extra dusting..so it gives an idea how it looks when there isnt to much distressing going on....

the picture to the left you cans ee the side bumb the soc hat has.. not the best picture from the side..I know..but it was the best out of the lot.

feel free to send me one of your hats you dont use anymore or cant sell..I will beat the tar out of it and try to make it even better then this...that would be a fun challence

What I'm wondering is how much is your head shape coming into play, Holt? This can make a BIG difference, in my opinion. We wear the same hat size, yet I couldn't get my FedIV to look like yours after all the trying and patience in the world. Is there a way to get pics of the hat in the same angle both with you wearing it and NOT wearing it?

its a size 58

the sides are 2.5'' maby 1mm less.
the front brim is 3''
the crown heigth is is 5'' at the top on the front pinch.

Wow is all I can say. Your brim looks so identical, and with specs we don't generally see. But it works.

I did notice your hat looked just a little taller, so the 5 inch height fits.

Both you and fedoraraiders did outstanding jobs on creating your hats. My hat goes off to the both of you. I thought your hat nudged his out by just a little bit. But both are great.

It looks like you both spent many hours refining your hats. And this is what Indy Gear is all about! Both of you guys really are impressive. Fedora

what I find funny is that many, many people say that the Fed cant do it..

of course.. a AB with the same amount of work and TLC would probably make this hat fade away.. but still I am pretty impressed with the Fed...
