Re: Gibson and Barnes new website is up and running!
I was stunned when the rep I spoke to said they'd be trying to get the new site up and running for the last four years!!
How do companies that build websites even stay in business when it takes them so long?
But you're right, better late than never. I'm just glad I got the "old" price two weeks ago when I ordered my Expedition.

Re: Gibson and Barnes new website is up and running!
Well, how's that for timing? I visited the G&B store today! I was in San Diego for work and took a few minutes to run out to El Cajon. I arrived about 10 minutes before they closed, but you'd never know it. Very nice folks. They wanted to give me a tour of the whole place and answered every question I could think of. I've been wrestling with which jacket to buy, but this might have just made the decision for me. I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I'm not comfortable buying something I haven't had a chance to see in person (Things like that usually get sent back). Just a great leather jacket. Well made and classy looking. Too bad they didn't have my size, I would've walked out with one...

Did you get to meet Dave Marshall? He's our 'man' who was involved in the creation of Lee Keppler's jackets, the Expedition, and has attended several of the Indygear QM summits. One GREAT guy!

I definitely will. It's always a good idea to let quality vendors know they are appreciated. You know, keep everybody happy.Michaelson wrote:I hope so too. Be sure to ask for him next time you drop by. I'm sure he'd be pleased to meet you.

Their clearance section links aren't working, I usually check that every couple weeks.

Re: Gibson and Barnes new website is up and running!
Just spoke to Dave, and he's passing the word. Apparently it's working at the shop, but that's in house, so he's taking it to the webmaster.
Stay tuned.
He also said thank you VERY much for reporting this.

Re: Gibson and Barnes new website is up and running!
Ok, apparently the problem is that anything higher than Acrobat 6 is not opening the files.
It will be fixed tonight, and should work by tomorrow morning.

Re: Gibson and Barnes new website is up and running!
Dave reports today that they've now tested the site with as high as Reader 9.1.3 with complete success from various computers.
Give it a try now and report if you're still having problems.

Re: Gibson and Barnes new website is up and running!
As you read this, please keep in mind that I'm a professional usability consultant; companies pay me a lot of money to figure out what does and doesn't work on their site.
I hate to say it, but the new site really seems like a lost opportunity. First of all, why do they punish us with PFDs when that page would be so easy to reproduce in simple HTML?
Also, the advantage of the web is that you can have a ton of images without wasting paper on a catalog. I am considering dropping $750 on a shearling jacket; I don't feel comfortable doing it with one lousy, small image. How about some high-res images? Different angles. Images of the jacket on a model. For a smallish company like this, no one expects professional models and artfully lit images; just use your digital camera and take a bunch of pics. Link to them with thumbnails so I can choose which angles I want to see. Not high-tech stuff. I bet their receptionist has a digital camera that can take decently hi-res pics.
You update a catalog once a year, it costs money to print and send. You can update a website any time you feel like it and, depending on how fancy you want to make stuff, it doesn't have to cost much at all.

I know what you are saying Adam, but apparently it took them four years to get even that up!
Maybe you should contact G+B?

Re: Gibson and Barnes new website is up and running!
Spot on. I really don't understand why it would be so hard to find somebody who knows how set to up a "website". I said something to that effect when I was out there (maybe a little less sarcastic), but I don't think they care. Perhaps they're happy turning out their quality product to a smaller, dedicated crowd? A new show room and upgraded facilities would seem to hint otherwise though...AdaminNYC wrote:As you read this, please keep in mind that I'm a professional usability consultant; companies pay me a lot of money to figure out what does and doesn't work on their site.
