Help settle a dispute with this poll

Post by squidkidd »

Actually it's more like a bet I have going on with another member here who shall remain nameless. Anyway, it's very simple - given the choice between the two, would you say this hat is more of a 'Temple of Doom' or a 'Last Crusade'.

Thank you for your help in this matter,
Brian

It almost looks like a cross between a LC and CS, but with the brim curl and relaxed pinch, my vote is for the LC. The crown is a little too tall for a LC, though.

I went for TOD. Brim looks too wide for an LC.

Just going by the crown shape, to me, it could be either one. To me, both of those film hats were very similiar, depending upon the scene referred to. I always figured the same stock Poet was used for both of these hats, IF you take out the Stetsons that saw some footage in these films. The Stetsons were not identical to the HJs.

With TLC, I see what looks to be various hats in the films, some are Raiders like in the block shape, while others are not. And to me, in TOD it seems like we don't get great shots of the hats like in the other films, at least not like we do in Raiders. Fedora

That is a ToD hat. The wide brim was already mentioned. The ToD hat also had really side dents. The only thing I see here that is more LC is the relaxed pinch. ToD had a tight pinch that was very much like we see in Raiders. I say ToD and even though I am seeing this on my Palm, I think I know who made that hat and it is a very good hat. If I'm wrong (and I could be as the pics are showing up teeny tiny) it is a fine looking hat.

I voted LC, but ONLY because that hat seemed to change brim width and crown height with every frame of the film throughout the entire movie!  ;)

It definitely has characteristics of both, but I feel it leans more toward the ToD side.

Looks a bit too tall to be ToD to me, I voted LC.

I went with ToD myself as that was my first thought when seeing it. The main difference I see is that (as John Penman told me when he was working on my hat) is that the bashes toward the back are more rounded and not as angled as in LC and this hat.

Of course, now watch this be a later Penman ToD!

I voted LC, because I remember the ToD hat as having a really relaxed pinch, to the point where it was almost unbashed looking.

The top is kind of tight, but the sides of that front pinch (the parts that do this / \ ) aren't so defined. This one reminds me more of a LC/CS hybrid, but I'm voting LC. It reminds me of the pinch in THIS hat here:

LC for me.
i dont think there is enough taper and the pinch on your hat is
almost identicle to the one in LC.

I think I could have easily voted for either one, or actually I deliberated a lot and still came up with the same thing, just pick one choice, and that was TOD, but the center crease does remind me maybe a bit more of LC. heh. What type of hat is it? A Henry? A Fed?

Huh... its almost a mixture of both isn't it? At first I thought that it looked like the LC hat in this pic:
Image
...and all that was missing was the tighter pinch on top, but as was pointed out, the brim looks narrower in the LC pic. Hmm, maybe a cross between a ToD village bash (but more symmetrical) and the warped brim from the plane hat? I don't know, guess I'll go with ToD...

I think neither one of you will win this "dispute". The field seems pretty much split.

It's a hybrid. Does it have a slight turn? To me it has a LC pinch, there's not enough taper for a ToD hat but it has similarities. I'm still going with LC but it has bits that seem to have been inspired by all film hats.

I just bought a Penman on eBay which was labelled a Raiders hat by John but when it arrived, it had no turn and a loose pinch and high centre dent. I suspect the previous owner didn't understand the turn, thought it was an error and tried to rebash it, failed and put it on eBay. I lowered the centre dent and tightened the pinch a bit, deepening the front dents. It looks just like the hat in this poll.

Ok the poll should be closed. I didn't vote because to be honest, I don't know the differences that well (can I hide under the Plymouth now). It's time to reveal the truth now.

Ok, thanks for being patient guys. I'm going to officially call an end to voting right there at a tie - 30 votes to 30 votes.

Gee, thanks everyone, that sure was helpful :P

The bet was between John Penman and myself whether COW would side more with him that this hat is more of a TOD or with me that it bears more resemblance to a LC. John's main argument was over the amount of taper, while I was focusing on the bash. I do agree there is generally more taper in TOD hats, but I think the LC hats (especially the one in the shot of Ford I posted, that this hat was based on) have a fair bit more than John consents. I guess we'll have to settle knowing everyone here pretty much reiterated our main arguments and voted accordingly.

As to the identity of this hat, it is a Miller whose ribbon I had initially replaced with a Todd's. It got to the point eventually though where the Todd's with it's unfinished edge just wasn't good enough for me. Lucky for me living in Portland and knowing John, I simply had him replace it with ribbon of the SA variety as a favor \:D/

here's a few shots comparing the Todd's to the real deal (Todd's on top obviously):
