Does Your Fedora look different in Mirror than In Person?

Post by Indiana Hutch »

Hey, I was wondering if anyone else had suffered from the same hat problem as me.

When I look in the mirror, my hat looks very SA and suits the style I'm going for. But for some reason, every time I take a picture, it makes my hat look different than if I take a picture of my hat standing in front of the mirror (if that makes any sense!). :-k

I'm afraid that people have seen a poorly bashed hat on my head for the past six months, than the nicely bashed one I see in my mirror. :?

Wow, great advice Michael. :D I have noticed the distance factor before, but now it makes sense.

Your mirror isn't one of those funhouse ones is it?
Seriously though, cheap mirrors do distort and Michael is right on.

It's the result of a number of optical effects. To mention a few ... as you look in the mirror your hat is most likely being illuminated from above, or from one of your flanks. When you are photographed you are illuminated from the direct front. A visual seldom seen in real life. Also no mirror is accurate, there is always some distortion and color distortion. Plus your image is reversed. You'd be surprised how much different you look when not reversed! If you have photo manipulation soft ware call up a pic of yourself, duplicate it and invert one of them to look at the comparison. Enlightening.

If you are taking your own photo's , like at arms length. Your photo's are distorted. Go out side and let someone else take a shot of you. Have them stay in the range of your camera.

I've definitely noticed this. A lot of times I put on a fedora and stand there and mess with it forever, and think "Ah, whatever... it looks alright, I guess." Then I see pictures later from the day and I love the way the hat looks! Better though than your hat looking great in the mirror and uh.... not looking so good in real life. :TOH:

Mine always look different in the mirror. The bow is on the wrong side, the turn is the wrong direction...it's just a mess. :? ;)

Yep, it can, and so can my face. lol. One thing that helps is to back up and take a shot from the distance, also opt for natural lighting at morning or close to sunset, forget a flash if you want the features of the bash to stand out more.

Yeah I noticed that the flash can distort the picture a lot, I only use it if its really dark where I am.

I never use just one mirror to know if my hat looks good. I use 2 to get an all round perspective so I can see it from every angle, from a distance and the right way round - as opposed to a reverse image using 1 mirror.

This pic was taken from about twenty feet away with a timer and sitting on a step ladder, took a few trys, but the result is deffinetly better than from one taken from 5 feet. Just zoomed in and found my spot and had some fun running back in forth. Luckly no one could see me.

Actually, it's one of the few tidbits of information from high school physics class. It's all different because you are looking at a "perverted" image, and it has NOTHING to do with sex.

Great hat Croft! And thanks coolmeister. I've done some work on it recently and I noticed that if I make the hat look distorted in the mirror, than it looks SA in the photo, odd I know, but it works fine. Also, I prefer the 'Idols Temple' look, but wouldn't mind a SOC look either.
