LC Black Hat?

Post by MustangLoverMex »

Hello fellow COW'ers, I recently saw Last Crusade and I realized that before the Jones' aboard the zeppelin Indy has a black coat and a black hat (Maybe a Homburg? :-k )
Does anyone noticed this before? Any info?

Regards,
-Alfonso :TOH:

Excellent Find. I've never even heard of that hat and it's easy to miss, too, hardly in frame.

It looks to have a bound snap brim and definitely a shoter, more tapered crown than a poet...it kinda looks like a simple center dent and very shallow side-dents that are more towards the middle of the hat body rather than the front. But it's really hard to see because the scenes are too dim for the hat to truly show up.

Very interesting. I'm going to have to rewatch LC and keep an eye out for that.

I saw it yesterday and I just noticed the same thing!! I remember that in some deleted scenes, Indy wear the hat with that black coat.. but I have no idea where to find these scenes. And, I remember that the entire scene with Indy and Henry is in the comic adaptation of LC, and again there's the black hat..

Yeah, it's been discovered before, but I don't know how deeply it's been discussed. The deleted scene I believe includes a fight scene between Indy and the big guy who accompanied the Nazi (You see them together approaching the Zeppelin). The big guy is the same actor who played the soldier Indy fights at the plane in Raiders, and the turbined one on the conveyor belt in ToD... If I have my info right. Anyway, since he doesn't wear it in the film it kind of gets left out of discussions here also. But if they hadn't deleted those scenes, I'm sure a lot of people here would have one more hat in their collection.

You speak of the late, great Pat Roach - the ultimate heavy! I-J. The LC fight you mention actually occurs on the Zepplin, but judging by the size of the coat and hat, it might have been intended that Indy swiped them from Roaches character.

The hat, as best I can see, is a wide-brimmed homburg. Not an uncommon hat for the time and place.

Would I also be correct in saying that a homburg has a crown with a center dent but no pinch?

Actually, a Homburg CAN have a pinch or side dents. The center crease and rolled brim are the constant elements.
Dents on a homburg were usually no tighter than an LC fedora, and this was considered a more casual look than no dents. I recently learned that homburgs with side dents were often marketed toward younger men.

I'd love to get a Homburg. I think it's a fine looking hat, but for older gentlemen (part of the reason it looks out of place on Ford in his forties). I think I need to wait at least another 30 years before it would look good on me.

I think the hat is a dark grey ;-)

Ford has worn a homburg numerous times (though briefly) throughout his screen career. This one stands out because it is ill-suited to him, and appears to also be too large. They probably did that on purpose.

The trick with a homburg on anyone, young or old, is to find the right dimensions and shape... much like any other hat. Some people just don't look good in homburgs, period. Others, like me, need just the right one, and no variation will be good.

If you watch movies, tv, and music stars closely, you will see the homburg on people of all ages. Some even look good wearing them! For example, homburgs show up frequently on African-American performers of rap and R&B. I think it works very well on them, and most are under 40.

Biggy wore one all the time and he looked awesome in it. I can't do it, though.

actually I think that joke is a reference to the raiders hat that indy wore on the seaplane when he was leaving san fran for tibet. back in the day there were "disagreements" over wether the hat was his regular brown fedora or if it was indeed gray...

You can actually see Ford holding the hat on screen as he and Henry Sr. are climbing the stairs heading to the Zepplein to board.

Yep. I'm quite aware of that as I was part of these boards when the brown v. grey case was hotly debated ages ago. Mine was a joke in return, as most folks who make such comments in jest were also involved in those discussions and know how crazy the debate got over time. ;)
