The best back handed comment I got was from an indie-rock hipster kid who told me she "liked my get-up".

I must admit - I did too.
The likeness of those I've been photographed with have been removed to protect the innocent ;)

Hi!

Just got my Fed IV. I've never owned a fedora, after joining the COW, some inner voice told me to order a fedora. Fantastic hat, the feeling is quite something. Here are a few pics of my bash attempt. The goal was to get a general raiderish look.

Indeed! If Indy listened to metal, it would certainly be Iron Maiden!

Bash looks good. I can't tell, does the center dent on the top need to come forward a little more toward the front of the hat?

Contra, I think the bash looks great. The top of the center dent on my Fed IV started out the same way, but conformed to the bash after a while. I just had to keep working with the crease until the felt loosened up a bit.

I've been wearing it a few days now, it's already starting to look better I think. It's #### hot here in Finland right now, I had to remove the lining to keep my brains from boiling. :Dietrich:

Hmm, I've never had a problem with either my Keppler or Federation being too hot. Even when I wore one during our 100 degree days last week. BUT, I can take heat very well, that may have something to do with it.

Maybe it's just me then.. I'm hairless, and during the hot days the leather band seems to make the hat as it feels like a shower cap around my bald head. Plus, taking care of two _very_ active little girls tends to make the sweat flow. :Dietrich:

You're by no means alone. If you pay attention, most folks around here DO complain of hats being hot. That's not to say that I don't get hot with a hat on, just it doesn't feel like others have described. Additionally, I think the Federations will be a tad hotter than others with the plastic cap in the liner

As a bald man I concur.
But I think it more a case of bald head+hat+heat. I sweat wearing any hat in the summer though it never stops me from wearing them ;)

BTW I've kept the plastic in my Fed.

I think you hit the nail on the head, Randy. I believe the plastic cap has a lot to do with the heat trap as well. I took my liner out this week because it was just too hot with it in. However, I really like the liner so I did not cut out the plastic piece as some have done. When it gets cool I will replace the liner. With it out it does make a difference (at least for me).

I have a post about this already going...

Yep, the plastic capped liner does trap the heat in. Great for winter, not so much in summer. ;)

Went through all winter without any liner. No problems at all) But it is still very hot in the summer, even without liner.

Hey folks,

I guess it's time that I show my very first Fedora.

ImageImageImage
ImageImage

I was going for the Raiders look, but there is something just wrong with it and I can't put my finger on it. I think the dents are not "boxy" enough, but atm I have no plan on how to change that.

Something like the Idol grab or the "Indy gets boozed up" (aka SOC) style would be cool, well, I just have to tweak it, till it fits.

Regards,
Daniel

p.s. Yeah, the hat is resting on an old hat and please excuse the poor cellphone cam quality.

][ndy,
Looks pretty good to me. Well done!
I'd have to see it on your head to know if you got that "idol grab" look though.

Congrats on your first Fedora as well! You've just taken your first step into a larger world;)

Hi ][ndy,
Welcome and Congrats on your first fedora!
:)
I agree with Bartram (and most people here who know their hats) that the key to getting really constructive instruction and opinion is to get that hat on your HEAD and take some more pictures.
The hat will always look a bit different on your noggin than sitting on top of another hat... or on top of anything else, really.
If you're the shyer type of person, no problem... just get the next few photos taken showing the hat from your forehead up if you'd prefer. We're not saying you have to show us what kinda chin you've got... but the hat will reveal where it needs adjusting more accurately once it's on your head.
Hope this helps a little.
In the meantime though, from looking at it I definitely think you DO have a hat there that can get itself to how you want it to look.
Cheers,
Mitch

Nice hat. I strongly recommend beating it up. dont worrie it can take it... beat it so much up that it becomes limp and soft. then give it the turn and start working on the bash.

Im sure people are sick of seeing this picture but I show it anyway... The Fed 4 is a hat that can be done a major transformation to. many people dont think the Fed4 cant be made into a raiders hat.

I think differently.

Actually, I already beat that thing up and I turned it before bashing. I also sat on it  .
I have seen your pictures before and it really is a nice bash. Do you mind showing that hat from the side and from top, so I have a 3 perspective view, I can use as a bash guide? Since it ist a Fed IV, I might get a similar result.

Based on your recommendation I just beat the ballistic drive out of my Fed IV.

:|
You owe me a new hat!

Just kidding! The hat took it like a man! Softened it up too. I had already given it the Raiders bash and that bash fell right back into place. I don't apply "the turn," I just don't like the look. But with the application of some dirt ... yeah, it's a Raiders hat!

Indiana Holt,

Before we go any further, I know I know...
;0
I'm really pleased with the way the bash looks on my Fed Deluxe IV... except for one detail. I think most people already know the centre dent won't stay low enough at the back. Can I please see a side view of the above hat?

P.S. I'm still using my iPod to go online as my laptop isn't working - hence the lack of photos! Can anyone tell me how to copy and paste on this thing?! I really really really really want everyone's opinion on my crease.

the crown bash is easy the front pinch and the 'mushrom' effect in the hat is something else...

If you want a Streets of cairo style hat you HAVE to wet it down or use alot of steam. otherwise it wont go anywere..

Amen! This is way nice.

For the record my center crease has settled down nicely too and really looks the part for the Raider's hat. It's the most durable hat I own. Really takes and lickin' and keeps on tickin' if you get my meaning.

A few shots to show the way my Fed has taken to that center crease:

The more I beat it up, the better it gets:

And Mark Seven:
Fabulous looking FED! Yours it what mine aspires to be. "Highest marks!"

I'm always worried that by smashing the shellac out of my hat, I'll accelerate the tapering, seeing as it's rabbit. My first two Indy hats were first edition Federations. Is this Fed Deluxe IV 'Heritage Felt' tougher and more taper resistant?

The reason I ask is I want to keep at least one Indy hat looking new and I really like the look of the Heritage Felt.

When folks "beat up" their hats, they petty much do just that. Some go so far as to squish it, throw it on the ground, kick it about, and even sit on it! While anyone who does this does so at his own risk (as results may vary ;) ) the idea is that by beating it up you loosen up the stiffener that is in the hat, making it floppier and feel softer.

They are both just as durable when it comes down to it. My old Akubra standard saw a TON of abuse and weathering before I passed it along, and it still had plenty of life left in it.
