Your favorite gray hat (another one of Jim's polls)
I already know who the hatter is. But I'm not sure if I want to get the Raiders Seaplane or the Crystal Skull train one. What do you think? Both look good but unfortunately, I can't get both. Thanks!

Re: Your favorite gray hat (another one of Jim's polls)
The grey train hat from CS is my second favorite hat in the series, after the SoC hat and followed by the CS hero hat. I would definately go with that one. Who are you getting it from, out of curiosity?

I'm voting Raiders Seaplane... but specifically (and I hope this doesn't SHOCK anyone too much) for the Penman Hat Co. Grey Seaplane.
Ain't no other quite like it.

I went for CS Train, because the Raiders hat isn't even grey!*
*ok, just kidding on that one. I'm actually in the grey camp. But, the CS one looks too classy for words.

Thanks Dave. I'm going with John Penman. You just can't go wrong with him with the quality, price and service. It would be nice to get an AB but its just not possible right now. And I already have a SOC (Camptown) which I just sent to him to be re-done.DR Ulloa wrote:The grey train hat from CS is my second favorite hat in the series, after the SoC hat and followed by the CS hero hat. both hats are fantastic. I get the feeling the CS Train hat will win this poll in the end by a very slim margin. It's just a classy lid through and through.

both hats are good but i'm going with raiders because
little is known about this hat, sort of mysterious.
and also i like tight pinches.

Re: Your favorite gray hat (another one of Jim's polls)
Wow! The bow on that Raiders grey is beautiful!
I would still go with the CS grey. I ordered mine with a 5 1/2'' crown height because I think that is better suited to me, but that CS grey block and styling is just unbeatable. You might consider bringing the crown height down, Jim, if that is something that concerns you.

Well as a very proud owner of the Penman CS Train hat I'm biased. I have absolutely no taper! I fell in love with it in the scene with Indy on the train platform and the steam from the engines billowing around him. And John's craftsmanship is excellent. I couldn't be happier.
Here's a couple of pics I've posted before. Hope no one minds.

Marty,
Thanks for the pics; much appreciated. I'm still on the fence as to which one to get. Yes, getting the CS train from Steve would be nice but its $100 more and I would have to wait a lot longer. I don't know, I'll have to see.

Thanks, Blackthorn. Don't get many comments, except the non-verbal ones where they look at you funny till you look back, but all the verbal ones are positive. Hats are much the oddity in my little town. I wear it with my dark suits to work and received a compliment from the guy at the counter of McDonalds. Gave him John's name and URL.Blackthorn wrote:

But back to the hat! It's beautiful. No taper and like I said I wear it to work most days. Hoping it softens a bit more. It's my first beaver hat and I wasn't expecting such a firm felt. But it's breaking in nicely.
They say that they wanted Indy's hat in IJ4 to be beaver because there would be a lot of water action and it would hold up better. Maybe I'll wear it next time I go to the water park!

So what did you vote?Mitch LaRue wrote:I can see that.
I suppose I should fine-tune my own convoluted answer to be:
- If you're committed to the idea of getting the Raiders Seaplane go with the amazing John Penman.
- If you're committed to the idea of getting the CS Train go with the incomparable Steve Delk.
BUT:
- In the movies I suppose I do think the CS Train Fedora is a classier, more beautiful looking (and I KNOW it's a more WELL-MADE) hat than the Grey Seaplane used in Raiders.
BUT (Part 2):
- I also think that John Penman makes a Raiders Seaplane that actually OUTSHINES the Raiders Seaplane that you see on-screen in the actual movie.
How's THAT for a wishy-washy answer?

I don't think Fox did anything wrong in suggesting Penman. He owns a Penman grey Raiders and is very happy with it. If somone else here is interested in a grey Raiders hat, then I think Fox reserves the right to speak his mind about a grey Raiders hat he own and how happy he is with it. This thread's purpose is to see what other members think about the hats.

Re: Your favorite gray hat (another one of Jim's polls)
I chose the gray hat, not because I made it, but because I know my gray hats are exactly what you see on screen. I have this thing about owning exactly what Indy wore. (and the reason I have dwelled on the Raiders hat for so many years)
What is ironic, is the gray hat you see in CS was Michaelson's choice of blocks, on most of the hats he owns from me. So, when I had to send in a gray hat, I quickly picked his up. The very same block(7 3/8). I already knew it made a great looking fedora, due to Michaelson liking it. Up until I made the gray hat for the film, he was the only guy here to own one!!! Ahead of his time!
So each time I watch the film, I always think.....well, there's Michaelson's fedora! And I would have never grabbed it, IF NOT for me seeing from his hats, that it made a great looking vintage looking hat. So, if you like the gray CS, you can thank our very own Michaelson for that. Fedora

@ Marty, beautiful hat, wear it with pride.
I find it really hard to pick between the 2 smartest hats in the series. To be honest I would have preferred the CS grey IF it had a tighter pinch. I do usually like a looser pinch for smart (dress) hats but not too loose or it ends up looking like a ToD.
I STILL haven't voted yet!!! ... still thinking!

There is no reason why you can't have a grey CS hat with a tighter pinch. If that is what you like, go for it. I think it is better to have a hat that looks good on you and that you are entirely happy with than have something SA that doesn't look good on you or are unhappy with.

Voted for the CS. I own a Penman CS grey. Getting ready to have it reblocked on the CS Hero block when I get my Raiders I ordered in April (need a box). I love Oaks updated pics on his site, I just don't like that pic of the CS grey. Just doesn't do it justice like his other pics do for the rest of his hats.

OK Michaelson, I thought I remembered you saying that you didn't like the gray hat/black ribbon combo, that it looked too "gangster" to you. So is your hat off of this block that combo, or light gray/ dark gray?Fedora wrote:I chose the gray hat, not because I made it, but because I know my gray hats are exactly what you see on screen. Travis,
Oh and by the way, I always thought that I liked the gray/black combo untill you said something, and now a zoot suit is all I can see when I see that hat. I think when I order a gray hat I will go with light gray and a charcoal gray ribbon.

Re: Your favorite gray hat (another one of Jim's polls)
Let me start all over with my small contribution to this thread and try again (again, again...)
*Ahem*
I've voted for the Raiders Seaplane Grey.
Dear JC1972: If you'd like to know more about my opinion (which includes some details as to which Vendor I personally think makes the best of the Raiders Seaplane hats - as well as my humble observations as to which Vendor makes the best of the CS Train Hats, please feel free to send me a PM and I'll elaborate further)...
for truly, in the right hands (of Vendors whose identities shall remain hidden) EITHER of these choices makes for a beautiful lid.
How's that, Michaelson?
Is that how I should have answered?
I'm sincerely asking, as I'm not sure when I can open my mouth and speak my mind anymore...
...I think I'm starting to get a complex... feel like a "can't do anything right" kinda vibe.

Re: Your favorite gray hat (another one of Jim's polls)
ok I've finally voted and I went for CS. I must admit I was a little surprised by the results!
I love the shape and colour of the CS hat except for the mega-loose pinch. But thanks Dave, I feel much better about my choice now.
Michaelson, I do understand the dislike for the 'gangster' look. But in my line of work, I view a lot of old photos of pre-WWII Britain and a lot of men went for that colour contrast, even Winston Churchill (even though it was a Homburg not a Fedora) long before the likes of Al Capone! I just think it's dead smart. I'm gonna put my own bash in mine, but it'll be closer to the CS hat.

Re: Your favorite gray hat (another one of Jim's polls)
No argument, it is smart....but as you pointed out, smart in the 1939-1940's. It attracts a LOT more attention in regular wear in such a stark contrast. Rather than getting complimentary remarks about your hat, you'll hear more 'are you trying to dress like a gangster' comments when you wear them with the black ribbon against the grey. Been there, experienced that.Snapbrim76 wrote:ok I've finally voted and I went for CS. I must admit I was a little surprised by the results!

My Grey Camptown came with a black ribbon, and until I removed said black ribbon, those 'gangster' comments were the ones I was getting. Not mean spirited, mind you, but not positive comments by any means. Most asked why I wasn't wearing one of my nice brown hats anymore.
Oddly enough, grey ribbon on grey felt has received nothing but positive comments. Weird.
Hollowpond, yes, light grey felt/dark grey ribbon combination has been my choice for years now.
Mitch, if you're trying to be amusing, you missed the mark with me this time. If you noticed, I said 'Mitch/folks'. It wasn't aimed at just you.
All you have to do is follow the thread and read the posts based on what the original posted question/remark states...especially when it's a poll.
I ONLY bring this up because this complaint has been brought up again and again by folks in the feedback section and PMs who ask a specific question, only to have things completely derailed with side comments. In this case the question was, to paraphrase, 'which style do you think is best of the two posted in my poll'. No where was it asked 'what hat maker should I go with regarding a certain style pertaining to the two I posted in my poll'. There was no request for campaigning of folks as to who was their favorite hat maker.
Why is this an issue? It's not aimed at you personally, Mitch, but you were just the last person I saw post before I noticed the trend.
This wandering off specific topic has become a problem of late, especially when it changes into a vendor thread, and anytime we say anything to anyone we get challenged. NOT appreciated.
So, my question to JC1972 is, do you want to change the nature/content of your original question now, moving the conversation toward manufacturer, or leave it as original stated?
We're here to cover the back of the original poster of a thread at all times, no matter WHO the originator of the thread is. Just let me/us know.

Re: Your favorite gray hat (another one of Jim's polls)
So Michaelson, am I right in assuming your CS AB gray hat has a dark gray ribbon?

Correct.
I answered that above. It got buried in the administrating.

Yes we can change the nature of the thread towards manufacturer; that's fine. Initially it was for the style. I never thought anyone was going OT. For what its worth, I had no problem with what Mitch had said since I'm looking for people's advice. And if he recommends a style for a certain vendor over another, then I'd like to hear his 2 cents on it. As of now, I don't know which hat or vendor. Both hat styles are very nice and both aforementioned vendors are great. If I could get both, one from each vendor; I'd do it. Unfortunately I am unable to go that route. Thanks again for your advice!
Regards,
Jim

Very good. Like I said, you never said that in any of your posts above, so we're around to make sure folks stick to the intent of the original poster.
Ok, Mitch/folks, green light....post away on your thoughts of your Penman now.

Re: Your favorite gray hat (another one of Jim's polls)
I... like 'em.
Michaelson, apologies for static from me...
I missed the original intent of this thread and assumed I could just mention a Vendor in order to lend a qualifier to my answer (as in "Will you be having the chicken or the salmon, sir?" "Well, I'll have the salmon... but only if it's POACHED!" ... I guess I'm always "OVERanswering" some questions, but because I didn't think I'd done anything out-of-bounds, I felt more like I was getting my knuckles rapped by you when I didn't deserve it... which was not appreciated by me. Not your intent, I realize... and because of that, there was admittedly "grumbling" in my attempt to be a "grumpy form of funny" (failed, I know)... but I DID feel like I couldn't get anything right on these Boards, lately... I appreciate that you said it's not aimed at me personally... I thought it was. I wasn't trying to challenge you... although I'm sure that lately having me on these Boards has proved challenging.
Last note from me:
Jim and I just finished PMing each other wherein here asked me to elaborate on my thoughts on the Vendor issue.
I'll share with you, however, the last thing I wrote to him, as it sums up my feeling about where I am with this:
But I DO apologize to you if I got your thread off-topic for a minute there, Jim...
I sincerely thought the subject of your thread DID leave itself open to someone saying, for example, "Well, I don't know which Vendor you'd be using, but I'm voting for the CS Train... but only if it were the version that Adventurebilt makes!" ... or, whatever...
Either way, I DID think the subject was open for us to all chime-in and speak our minds... But I DO understand the MODs not wanting the focus of your thread to spiral off into another debate of "Penman!" "No, Adventurebilt" "No, Fed IV Moonstone!" "No, it's BROWN!" etc, etc...
Hope my opinion actually helped you with some of this.
Good Luck with your decision.

Seeya on the Boards tomorrow, Michaelson... I'll try again to not tangle up your hair too much, but no promises that I won't fail a little.
