need help big time

Post by your ghost host »

I bought a hat made of 100% wool
with a good price and raiders measurments too!!!

http://www.themovieshop.com/Indiana-Jon ... Fedora-Hat

So I got home bashed it without looking at pics ](*,) (stupid me) and I lived with it for a while. Then I watched the movie (raiders) and noticed my hat stinks.
finally I tried rebashing it but I already creased it so many times it won't become undone
#-o and I cant seem to do anything too it

HELP!!! [-o< [-o< [-o<

Hey YGH,

Can you take some pictures of the hat? Try not to hold the camera too close to the hat or it'll look more tapered than in real life. Be sure to get a few different angles!

I was expecting something far worse! Can you show a picture of it on your head? As it stands, it doesn't look all that bad, especially for a wool hat.

Doesn't look as bad as I thought is was going to be from what you wrote. Most of what you see is the hat it's self but I still think you can improve the bash. Try and get the front of the center dent to be 4 3/4 and the back of the center dent 4 1/4. It's always a good place to start. The you need to put in a crease on the non bow side like this \ and the bow side like this /. I hope that helps.

If I may be so bold as to speak to John's point, what he means is that if you're looking at the profile/side view of the hat, on the front side of the hat, the center dent (the crease going down the top of the hat) should be 4 3/4in tall at the front, and 4 1/14 tall in the back.

Yeah, it isn't too bad, man.

I have that hat too. Here are some pictures of me wearing mine.

It's actually a great hat for the money.

I wore it.

But seriously, I try to resist weathering or distressing my gear. I figure whatever it is, it'll break in over time. But to tell you the truth, the hat that I'm wearing in those pictures got worn in the rain a few weeks later, and now it doesn't look quite as good. So I bought another one, just to have one weathered, and one still nice.

Let me see if I can help you understand this. I took the liberty of using your pictures for illustrative purposes, I hope you don't mind ;)

In the next picture the green line is the center dent:

This needs to be pushed down until the measurement for the part marked with the red line in the next pic is 4 3/4" high and the part indicated with blue is 4 1/4" high

I hope this helps.

The wool is your problem. Wool hats are a disaster. Once the get deformed, they are almost impossible to get back. Throw it away and chalk it up to a learning experience. (I can say this because I've been there.)

You MIGHT be able to fix it if you had a hat block and then dunked the thing in water, but the right block would probably cost you more than a decent fur felt hat!!!!

ygh, you could always try adding some spray stiffener to the brim. Though wool may not be as favorable as fur felt, I think some short change the possibilities of getting a wool hat back into decent shape. It's true it won't withstand the same type of abuse and weathering as fur, and it might be difficult at best to restore the hat to its original condition, but there's no reason to instantly throw it out at this point. What do you have to loose by trying and experimenting? Again, I'd try adding stiffener to the brim, and after that settles in, you might want to add the appropriate scotch guard to repel the rain.

Seems like an awful lot to go through. If you really like the hat, give it a shot though. However, guaranteed if you get a felt hat, you'll laugh about back in the day when you used to have a wool hat and tried to wrangle that monster (once again, I speak from experience).

I don't doubt your experience, maboot. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. ;) But it seems that often we instantly jump to "throw away the hat" arguments before even considering other options, or whether or not the fellow can even afford another hat of any grade at the time. It might work, be only a temporary fix, or it might not work at all. Either way, there's still much to be learned from trying. Heck, without such experiments, we probably wouldn't even have the offerings we have today! ;) I like to present options, at least, and let folks make their decisions from there.

Yup. That's why I threw in the line:

"If you really like the hat, give it a shot though."

After all the little projects I've worked on to try to make things more accurate or better, including a wool hat, an idol moneybox, a headpiece, a bag strap...and those are just the Indy ones, I'm ALL for trying to doctor up the gear you have until you are happy with it.

I'm just sayin' is all. ;)
