Michaelson wrote:Not sure where you got the idea they were dimensionally cut brims. No where on the site does it say that, nor has that ever been posted at COW as being the case. :-s It's their custom felt hats that come with dimensionally cut brims.

My brim measures 2 7/8" all way round, and I'm more than happy with the results. I wanted a larger brim for sun, so they made my hat from a larger straw cone.

If you have questions about a hat, ANY hat, ask when you order. That's true for ALL the custom hat makers.

I found out they stopped installing liners a couple years ago due to complaints regarding the amount of heat that was allowed to build inside the crown due to the plastic cap, so they leave the lining out now and just apply a tip-sticker in crown itself, so the liner is not an option....unless, I'm sure, you tell Joe you want one and negotiate the price for a liner. I'm sure it's not that expensive.

Regards! Michaelson
I know it doesn't state that the brim is dimensionally cut....I just assumed (yes that word) that a hat maker like PB calling a hat, be it straw or felt, an INDY hat.....that it would automatically be dimensionally cut as that's one of the staples of BEING an Indy hat....

I'll live, as it is a nice summer hat. It won't stop me from wearing it. :)

Well, I took the plunge! Just got off the phone with PB and ordered a Indy Straw. I went with the dark brown, standard stiffness, and a CS bash. Pretty much goes like this:

CS Bash
Open crown - 5 1/2"
Brim - 2 3/4" (no dimensional cut on a straw. After thinking about it, that would not look too good being frayed and all).
Front - 5" from top to brim break
Back - 4 3/4 from top to brim break
Went wth the black ribbon since it is a darker brown.

If anyones intersted, cost $135 w/ May discount. The picture of the color of straw is "Dark Brown" and is posted under the Milan Straw section on the top of the home page. I believe it is the 6th one down in the Milan Section.

Sounds good, mcmanm! :D
Some questions though --
How long of a wait time did PB say?
What kind of stiffener are you getting?

Thanks,
Frank

12 week turn around since its custom. Xtra $25 for a rush order. That cuts the turnaround time to 3 weeks. I do not know what stiffener they are using, but can ask (now they have 3 different levels). Said the hat would have the stiffness/flexibility of a fur felt (standard stiffener level). Actually mentioned Borsalano by name. Highest level makes it resemble a western cowboy hat, least is obviously the softest. I'm pretty excited. I'll let you know hopefully by Father's Day :D

I was their last order with the May special. After mcmanm's order I decided to go with the dark brown Milan straw and black ribbon as well.
I was told that 2 6/8 (3/4) in. brim might be closer to 2 5/8 due to how the straw comes together.
And a stiffener of medium leaning toward heavy to be most like a felt hat.
PB now has up in the Milan straw section a line that a Dimensional cut is not possible. I'm thinking that was aimed at us crazy COW guys.
I will post pics when it arrives.

Thanks again,
Frank

TD,
What are you going with? ROTLA? CS? Really didn't get any feedback on brim and "how the straw comes together". Wonder if I should call them? I was going for the Brown CS look myself.

I'm am going with the Raiders look for myself like I mentioned via PM using my JPD specs. The dark brown straw with black ribbon that you chose inspired me. Just keep me posted on how you progress.

Just received my Indy milan straw. Really nice looking hat. Went with the CS look and they pretty much nailed it. BIG Problem. It is way too big (like over the ears big). Same thing happened to another member as well. I'm a 23" long oval and own too Penmans with no trouble. What should I tell them when it comes to a resize? How could I measure the size of the hat to tell the differnce? Would like some advice before I send it back. Thanks for any suggestions.

Not much to advise. Tell Joe what you said above. Double check your head measurement, then put a tape inside your new hat and see where it falls.

Send it back with a note to the effect it's too big, and note the difference in head measurement and what you got.

They'll fix it.

Sent Joe email last nite and he replied pretty quick. Only reaon I know I'm a 23" long oval is because I have 2 Penmans that fit like a glove. I also asked to add a little more stiffener to hold the CS bash. Other than the fit, it is a really nice looking hat. Will post pics when I get it back. Hopefully soon.

Michaelson,
They'll get mon or tues. What kind of turnaround do think it would take? Never had to do anything like this, but figured you have. How much will they take in? Do I/will they need to contact them/me before they start work?

I don't know, but I do know that once it's in their door, they get right on it. Ask Joe.
