My Indy straw hat
Hello folks,
So here is my selfmade "Indy" Straw hat.
I already made several furfelt fedora, this one has been even easier to make.
(the staw capeline only needs to be moisted in order to form it on the block)
I have to bash it and change the brim shape, make the bow. But this is a good begining.
Regards,
Nicolas

It looks great! I would love to know what the process is on this. I've been wanting to make one for myself.

Re: My Indy straw hat
I am a lucky guy, a hatmaker works near of my place (at 15min from my place by car)
He sold me the capeline.
I guess that you can find the same kind of straw capeline at Leko's or Judith M millinery...

Beautuful craftsmanship. Would you be interested in making these in sable brown for others? If so, how much would you charge?

I, for one, would be interested in acquiring the hat as it is in the pics above. Were you interested in accepting orders, let me know.

Re: My Indy straw hat
WOW
Glad to see that you like my work !
I have to think about it:
I would have to make several block (one for each size)
And find a way to sew the sweatband with a machine (It takes about one hour manually).
I have no idea about the price, it should be more than 50€ since this is the price of the capeline, ribbon and sweatband.
In this case I would also make fur felt hats for about the same price than straws....
Yeah I have to think about it...
By the way, what are your size?
Regards,
Nico

Wow! Beautiful work, Nicolas.
MORE impressive craftsmanship from you.
If you're seriously wondering who might be interested in these, all I can say is:
Hmmm... I'm a 7 & 3/8, too...
So, if you make one of those for Indiana Greg... you might want to make ME one as well!

European size 58
Re: My Indy straw hat
Great looking straw. Was wondering how you made the dimensional cut in the brim? I ordered the PB Indy straw and they said they could not do it without fear of fraying. Any suggestions on how to cut it?

PB hats are made from a different kind of straw, milan, not panama.

Michaelson,
I'm a novice when it comes to straw. This will be my first. Can you explain the difference between the straw types? Pros and cons, etc. Thanks.
Matt

Re: My Indy straw hat
Panama is prime VERY tightly weaved straw, where the milan is a looser weave straw. That's why there's a better chance of fraying with the milan if it is cut. The panama is a bit more forgiving, but can also kick the price up expotenially as it's a LOT harder to hand make.
REALLY prime panama hats can cost in the neighborhood of 4 figures, though high end panamas hang in the $500 range! Those are the 'museum' grade hats.
This website shows the difference in the grades and tightness of weaves that you can achive in a panama hat. Scroll down about half way on the page....

That an easy one : I didn't!mcmanm wrote:Great looking straw. Was wondering how you made the dimensional cut in the brim? I ordered the PB Indy straw and they said they could not do it without fear of fraying. Any suggestions on how to cut it?
You have to fold it to dimension, then sew it and cut the part between the edge of the capeline and the sewing.
(Errrrr am I clear???)

Nico

I am size 56 European, 7 US, 6 7/8 UK. More exactly, 22'' head circunference.
Re: My Indy straw hat
Please explain the fold/sew method. May attempt on my PB when I get it.

Re: My Indy straw hat
I would definitely be interested in one of these also. Being in Texas, I need a good straw hat, and as much as I like my PB straw....it doesn't capture the look that YOU have definitely captured.
I wear a 7 or a 7 1/8 in US sizes.

Just to add, Belloq's hat was a panama straw, so there is a relationship to the hobby.
