I'm Not Getting a Fedora!

Post by AZ Pete »

...That is what I told myself when I picked up a MK VII and a whip. That was it, no more gear!

Now I am debating between a Christy's and a Fed IV.

What the heck is wrong with me!!!! Will it ever end?

I guess I should just give in to it all and have fun...That's what life's all about in the end.

My wife has a different opinion, of course!

Anyway...

I am leaning toward the Christy's (Light Sable), only because I live in Arizona and the Fed IV might be too dark. From what I have read on the forum the Light Sable from Christy's is fairly SA (Raiders).

Regards,

Pete

Heck, I thought I only needed one Fedora before I came here....bought a Christy's a few weeks ago, and now thinking about a Fed VI in Grey.

I'm thinking the exact same about the leather jacket. I just ordered my first ( a wested) and I've told myself that I would only need one.
But something tells me that I'm likely to end up with multiple jackets, I am a gearhead after all.

As for a fedora, I ordered an AB deluxe back in February. Would be nice to have it before I'm going down under to Australia, but it's not likely. Marc's a busy man after all.

All the more reason to get a Fed IV - the sunlight will cause the felt to fade after a time, so that ideally it will be the right color once it's done fading. -M

Hmm...good point. I have been reading good things about the Fed IV as well. As I said, it came down to color seeing as that the price is about the same.

Also durability. Akubra's known for being built like a tank. Christy's...not so much. -M

Ok Im different than you guys. Im not wantting to look like indy. I just like alot of things he has . I bought a Raiders style fedora ( not come in yet) In Black with a dark gray ribbion , Because I like fedoras and the way men look in them. I am going to buy a 10 foot whip but in brandy with saddle tan knots, bcause Im training to become a professional whip cracker. I allready have an 8foot whip
I have a black leather jacket too. I would like to have the bag but i dont have any thing to use it for .un less I could fit a laptop in it .Can i ?
So i understand what you guys are saying . One question i have is why you want the exact things indy has . Why not be unique

The MKVII can definitely NOT fit a laptop.

I have the bag, which I do actually use every day (yeah, I carry a "man purse," there, I said it!). I have an "Indy Fedora" because I like hats, and I like Indy.

Why do we want the exact things? Well, that's kind of the idea behind the whole group here, isn't it?

oh dude, don't worry about that, there's a bag that looks just like the mark, but fits a laptop if you don't care about the way the liner looks. They sell on ebay and amazon for way less than that, but you should get the picture.

But hey if you feel wierd about this whole collecting thing, don't. It's not buttons, it isn't old soda cans that make your basement look like a recycling center (no offense to anyone who does, just takes up space is all i'm saying) this is useful stuff for the most part, only difference being it is awesome....

Well, I would agree on some levels. Unique is great. In fact, my first whip was from Bernie, a 7ft 12" handle 16 plait whip, not the traditional Indy whip. However, I do enjoy getting Indy style gear as well. Thus my quest for a fedora (that I said I would never get)...

Who knows what's next...

O I get what your saying about it being fun. And ya it is awsome. Its just I hate being called Indy Jones. And I dont like being compared to him. But then I see these pictures of guys that have the exact hat , boots , bag and so on . Do you guys like being known as the Indy guy?
I love the Indy gear don't get me wrong, But I never wear my hat while i'm practicing my cracking . That way people don't think im trying to play like Indy. I don't know if you guys feel that way or not

I used to have problem with that but now I´m fine with that. Most people don´t mean it negative, they just want to show you they´ve recognized it. At least that´s my experience.

To get back to the original topic, I would pick the Christy´s, my three are still looking good after some rain showers. But the Federation is also a very good and tough hat, it´s my go to hat when it´s already raining or snowing. But if you´re like most here (me included) you will surely get both in the end one day ;)

If you´re once "obsessed" with Indygear, it will never really end. You may have a break someday but you will come back. I had a 9 year long break and just came back to get a new jacket. Well in the end I got several fedoras, a bag and I´m waiting on a new jacket. Before that all I was pretty satisfied with my Wested and my Miller.

Well, but I can only agree it is really a lot of fun!

There's a small hole in your logic: you're assuming that joe public is as good at recognizing Indy hats as we are. He isn't. You could wear ANY fedora and realistically expect to get the Indy comments when you go out. Meanwhile you could wear a 100% SA Adventurebilt (like I do, daily) and get almost no Indy remarks (again, like me). It really depends on what you're wearing it with. If you're wearing a safari shirt and a leather jacket with it, then yeah, you're definitely going to get the Indy remarks. I don't do that though. I wear it with a t-shirt and either khaki's or some type of cargo pants. Hardly ever a comment, knock on wood. As for why I wear it? It's because I think the Indy hat looks best. I don't wear it to be like Indy, I wear it because it's one of the most stylish hats I've ever seen and so I want to wear it. -M

Yes.
Just order both the Christy's and the Fed IV to be on the safe side! As stated above, you likely will anyway! Seriously, the Akubra is tougher, but the Christy's may be a little better in the heat there, being a lighter felt. May as well get a PB straw Indy for the really hot days while you're at it!

Hey Pete! I live in Mesa.

I have a Christy's in regular old Sable. I also have a Deluxe Fed I've had for many years.
I have to assume the Fed is tougher (I haven't really ever tried to put the Christy's through the paces), but its color is not my favorite in terms of screen accuracy.

If you want to open a hat box and be floored by how much the color looks like what you have seen countless times on screen, get the Christy's. (In Sable!)

Of all the hats I've owned over the years, I've never freaked out over the color like I did when I opened that Christy's box. It has that certain something. (I'm sure my Mag/AB/HJ would have had a similar effect on me when it arrived if I hadn't gotten the Christy's first.)

As far as sable vs. light sable goes, I've never seen the light sable in person, but the sable is an absolutely flawless match for my Mag/AB/HJ.

What I have found with the Fed IV Deluxe is that it is made well. The felt and sweatband is quality material.

Just as a reference, I posted the Christy's Sable and Cork fedoras on page 10 of the Christy's thread. If I had to do it over again, to buy a Christy's for the first time, I'd go either Cork or Light Sable. The Sable is more of a true brown color, while the Cork has some reddish-brown undertones in it. It seems to me that the closest color for what is found on screen has a reddish brown hue, if you consider the 'screen used fedora' found in the archives forum of this site.

Here is a better idea of the color comparison:

Please note the links below:

Screen used link:

Christy's Sable and Cork comparison:

http://indygear.com/cow/viewtopic.php?f ... &start=450

Based on what I see, the only real difference in color is that Terry Leonard's hat, as he is about to do the truck scene, is catching full sun, while my photos were taken as it was almost dusk. Having stated this, the customer service rep. says that they sell more fedoras in light sable than any of the other colors (for an Indy hat). To me, it seems a touch too light.

I still have 2 HJ Poets from the early '90's, and my newer Magnoli HJ. My Christys Light Sable, while a very close match, is a tad darker than any of them; and since Sable would be even darker, that points to Light Sable as the most accurate color.

But, I can see very little difference between the 2 shades on the hornetshats website, so I believe both colors (and also the cork) would work fine as Indy hats.

It would be interesting to see fabric swatches of the Sable & Light Sable to compare up close (I believe Christys can provide this).

The Movie Shop once sold the Christys Adventurer, and offered it in Light Sable only.

I received a swatch from Hornets Hats, maybe a month or so ago, and this is partly what led me to the Cork, a good idea if considering multiple purchases. The light sable swatch is just slightly lighter than sable, but it doesn't appear to have the lighter reddish tinge that the cork has. It also appears that the 'Beige' would be a very nice hat, for a non-Indy.

I really like the regular Sable on my Christy's.

I had much the same reaction as havershaw. When I opened the box, the hat just ooozes that Indy vibe. Honestly, to anyone who doesn't visit a site such as this and take such an active interest in the minutiae, either the Sable or Light Sable would EASILY pass as an "Indy hat."

Good to see there are others in AZ wearing a Fedora. How's it been in the summer?

I decided, after hours of reading on this site, to go with the Fed IV Standard. Sounds like it will be a great starter hat for me and I like that it is a tough hat. Looking forward to getting it next week and bashing a hat for the first time (yikes!). Hope the color is okay!

I tried to fit a friend´s netbook in my bag and it fit, but it was a rather tight fit. But I guess you could always check the dimensions of your netbook if it will fit into a MkVII
