Anyone still into the Washed Goat?

Post by Raider S »

I haven't heard much about this lately and was wondering if people are still wearing theirs. I can't imagine a lightweight leather for warm weather that would be as strong as this one.

While the smell is still a little wierd this is THE leather for warm weather. I'll try to get photos of mine since it's been slightly distressed.

I LOVE mine!! :D I've gotten a few compliments on it already (haven't worn it much yet) and I think it's just great.

Love it, but even I'm not that crazy. Mid 20's C (high 70 f) this week, t-shirt weather.

Good for the evenings though.

I'll admit, every goatskin jacket I've owned definitely has a different odor than a cowhide....not a bad one, mind you, but one you can definitely define as not the 'norm'.

It's not something you need to be concerned about. Just don't expect that rich 'cowhide' smell when you first open the package, but one that is definitely not what you're used to. You get used to it very quickly, and as stated above, it dissapates quickly with use and airing.

I've noticed that I dissipate more quickly these days with use and airing.

My washed goat is too hot for summer. I'd much prefer my Todds Standard....thinner and lighter.

Sometimes not, I admit it... :-0

People have described goat as a little fishy compared to other leathers but it's not a bad smell. It's not as good as a brand new pair of leather shoes, but it's not something people would run from. Maybe a bit of rotten in there or a wet dog smell!

If the Todd's is as light as people keep saying I really want to see one in person.

The washed goat is a great looking leather. But better not from Wested.
I got one with a few backbone marks on it. I especially stated when I made the order that I don't want any backbone marks.

Some hides will have a bit of a stripe or coloring where the hide stretched over the spine or backbone of the animal.

I have a spine mark but it isn't a big deal because it has blended in with the rest of the aging over time. It adds to the character somewhat. Some might be more pronounced than others I'd imagine.

Pretty common on a backpanel that's a big piece of leather from a smaller animal like a goat. I wouldn't expect it on a cowhide jacket but it's not unexpected on a goat jacket.

I have some marks on my goat jacket too, but once you get used to the jacket you hardly notice it, and agreed it blends in.

I don't know, do you have custom or OTR jackets mine is an otr, it is shared with a tag that says, polyester/satin lining real leather. its near the bottom of the liner.

Is that tag only put in jackets made of goat? Neither of mine have the tag.

Garment subject to rain?
Good Lord...
Have any other Wested owners seen this tag? Mine were all 2008, and all but one of five were customs...I never saw it.
Was it only for washed goat? Or washed goat custom jackets even, because I don't recall seeing it in my washed goat LC.
If it was only for the washed goat, it may as well have said 'Yes, your jacket has spine marks, get used to it!'...

Reminds me of a line from a salesman (Gill!) in 'The Simpsons', remarking that rain water will strip the paint right off the SUV Homer is admiring..

This tag sounds very familiar. Since I only have a Wested from '99 and the new ToD washed goat, I believe it's in my ToD. I'll double check when I get home tonight.

To respond to Raider's initial topic, I love my washed goat!!!! I've been wearing it very regularly. We've had a few "very warm" weeks here in LA, so I've shyed away from wearing on those exceptionally hot days, but the nights have been very cool, so it's the perfect weather for this lightweight beauty. I just soaked my jacket the other night for about 30 minutes, so it's still in the drying & wrinkling stage. I'll take some new pics of it this weekend and post here for all to see.

Kind regards,
Craig

Holt and Dutch,

I looked back at my order info from Wested - I actually ordered that Raiders jacket in August of '02. Oops. Sorry about that. I bought my MBA shirt and trousers from Noel in '99. If you still want to see pics of the jacket, I'd be happy to post some when I get home from work tonight.

Man, that's a scary thought too! Time does fly!! I can't believe that jacket is 7 years old already.

But like a 'wise man' said, "It's not the years, it's the mileage." Will post some pics tonight. :)

Thanks, Holt! Will do. I thought I remembered seeing that thread around here somewhere.

And to keep this thread moving in the right direction, I'll post pics of my washed goat ToD here over the weekend, once it dries out. Man, that thing soaked up the water like a sponge! It's definitely gonna take a few days to dry, but I'm already loving the wrinkled sleeves.

Even though I worried about how it would look in the long term, I really think the washed goat is perfect for the ToD look. Now if Holt and the rest of us could get Wested to offer a different lining as an option, people would be set. :)
