Has anyone ever attempted this? It seems like Indy's bag would be easy to replicate, or at least approximate. The pattern seems excessively simple. The difficult parts would be: finding the fabric. (for this i think i would buy a used military back pack or something of the same material, that i could cut down), and the snaps. (I suppose the snaps wouldn't be as difficult as the drainage hole. Which could be abandoned.)
Is there anyone who has tried/considered trying this? if so, any stories from the front? I think i'm gonna try it! (Just today i started modifying a surplus army shirt to have the classic Indy pleats. Once you start DIYing, it's hard to stop.)

i am almost done with sketches
of each view of the bag. I have all of the
measurements written down, and have
found cotton duck (what the bags made of)
at a fabric and craft store. I am still looking
for the hardware. when the sketches are
done i am going to post them.

I've got a beat, and I mean beat, W&G bag I've been meaning to dismantle for some patterns. When I get home for thanksgiving break I'll take it apart. I'll finally have some time away from all this school work to get some of these fun projects finished.
The WPG bag is good, but I always felt that it lacked texture... that canvas just feels a bit smooth to me. Also, the drains on it bother me, anyone have any leads on better hardware?
I think it would be great to make our own bags. The webbing for the metal rings could be cannabalized from original bag straps. Plus the fabrication of individual bags could really put to rest color preference for many, as you could just choose whatever shade of green/tan you like best.

Hat piece?
What do you mean by hat piece? I've never seen a bag in person. I was just going to take my measurements off the specs on the main Indy gear page. I take sewing lessons, and my teacher is really good at figuring out what size fabric you'd need to cut to make something a certain size. I figure with her help, the specs on the website, and the fact that i'm just going for a reasonably close approximation, i should be fine. I would love to see a pattern if you managed to make one, Mola. Also, a really good fabric store opened near me recently, i will go look for cotton duck. I can feel the excitement growing inside me!!

The "hat" is a metal disk for wrapping the lanyard around your waist.
And the "drain holes" are air vents as the filter of the mask was put inside the bag allowing air to go in from the bottom.

Good Call on the matress bits. I may even have a matress i'm getting rid of soon, i'll have to check it out. The only problem is how to get them onto the bag? Most metal inserts like that are a one time sort of application, i think. Either way, matress parts would make an interesting story for when people asked me about my bag.

The drain holes are just grommets.... I bought a kit at Wally-World once upon a time so I could add extra grommets to a tarp I had cut up to make smaller tarps.... the kit included a bunch of grommets, and a die and cup for placing the grommets... you would set the cup underneath, put the grommet on top, then set the die on top of the grommet and whack it with a hammer....
